View Full Version : Track Day Petrol Usage?

Yesterday I was surprised that I got around 4 x 20 min sessions, approx 170kms, at Pukekohe on *one* full tank (23 litres) of gas, and I was giving it heaps most of the time! I noticed that most/all the other bikes had to refill after only 2 or 3 sessions.

For those of you who ride the track days, how much does a tank of gas normally last you? :weird:

Btw, it cost me a whopping $25 to fill up after leaving the track!!! I feel we're getting ripped off on petrol BIG TIME nowadays.

Would it be possible to get fuel that hasn't had tax added?
You arent using the road after all....

I can ride the 10 or so miles and do 4 20 min as you do and ride home again on the F4 without the fuel light coming on....have no idea how big the tank is tho!!!

The only trackday I've done was at Taupo last Feb (remember how cheap petrol was then?) I did approx 80km for the day for about $5

'Twas a BRM day, think entry was $30. Small track but lots of fun. Was reaching 200k on the straight so was not dawdling to conserve fuel. And it was hot - 32-35oC

i used to get two maybe three sessions on my gsx-r750 , the fuel light used to light up on the third session , i used to fill with the race gas but really didnt notice a huge difference in power , did however notice a dent in my wallet and a lovely smell whifting out of the exhaust! thought i was rossi!

I'm picking the other guys probably started with half or less filled tanks. Really serious types would bring a can and put in just enough to do the session.

I was told how much horsepower is needed to accelerate 1 kg up to a given speed. I suppose the thing to remember really is the every bit of extra weight makes a difference.

Really serious types would bring a can and put in just enough to do the session. Most of the guys started with full tanks, I gassed up with one of em. 3 guys had jerry cans full of petrol, but they also had trailers and toolsets...hard to get that gear on your bike if you ride it down there, like 4 of us did! There are service stations only 1 min ride from Puke anyway, but the hassle is waiting for the gates to open/close between sessions, too bad the pits aren't on the other side of the track!

from to use or not to use. I suspect that not matter how much noise we all make, we'll continue to pay whatever price the oil companies set. Despite their record profit margins

I went to a Honda demo day a few years ago,and although it wsn't supposed to be a race, the dealers had to go out and get more fuel after the morning sessions, because the reasonable amount they'd allowed for had all been used up. Plus the bikes all had VERY scuffed tyres, some of them almost knackered.

the old adage: its a rental dont be gentle

probally came to the game, I would be more willing to try stuff on a bike that wasn't mine and fair game ( ie not a mates but a corporate thing you know what i mean)

I know I'm stating the obvious buuuuuuuuut: If you have a bike that makes 110KW+, then you will need to burn enough fuel to produce 110KW+
If you took a Nifty50 to the track it wouldn't use anymore (or much more) fuel than just riding it to work as you are always giving it death.

Zed can't find my docket but I used about 12 litres for the 3 sessions which equals $18 bucks. This according to my calcs is about $6 per session, which is about the same as yours. My gauge on the Honda showed 1 bar left but had another 6 litres left if I believe the factory claim. better to fill up than suffer the embarassment of having you tow me back to the pits eh.

This begs another question on the accuracy of fuel gauges on bikes.

I normally fill up at the BP at Paps AB, and then get on the track.. I get about 150kms from the tank when the light comes on. And by that time, I'm just about done on the track anyway (or the tyres are!)..

On the 14/08/05 Track day at Puke "Roxanne" did 90Miles (144.84Km) without hitting reserve (1 more time around would have but). Filled afterwards in Puke. 16.13L of 96 costing $24.02. so on the track "She" was doing about 8.9-9Km to the litre.
