I'm going to Japan for 6 months to work and am thinking of sending back a few motorcycles, or rather, I was thinking of aiming at mopeds - but am having second thoughts. I heard the Rego process for mopeds changed in 2011. Do they now require full rego at great cost like motorcycles? Anyone been there and done that? I scanned the LTNZ site and can't come up with any concrete answers except that mopeds now require rego like motorcycles do.

Well, actually, not me. I'm into off road stuff and jetskis. Stuff rego. Sold the road bike.

Says that 0-61cc mopeds cost $443.97 for their first registration and $403.03 per year after that?
The last time I paid a rego on a 50cc moped I paid about $70...for a year :gob:

well, obviously. because mopeds cause so many horrific crashes and are a massive drain on public healthcare.

So, it's then a total waste of time to bring them to NZ.

If you're talking 50cc scooters, its ~$170/yr for rego. I just did mine today. First rego with plates is $213.85

That's for a 0-60cc motorcycle, scroll down a little further and you'll see the moped section

Wrong and wrong. Registration is $213.85 for 12 months and vehicle licensing is $172.91 for 12 months.

I might be able to shed some light here.
About the time our rego charges turned to custard, I decided I wanted a moped for groceries & the like.
My first one was a recent import, and when I tried to register it as a Moped with LTNZ it damn near became a lie detector test. LtNZ had just decided to enforce the rules re nothing over 50cc or 2kW to be Moped registered. Up until that time, the dealers had apparently been pulling the wool quite a bit.
Eventually, I wound up with a 50cc scooter rated by the manufacturer at 2.7kW output, but registered previously (for life!) as a Moped in NZ. Great; about $180 per year rego (even though under current rules it was a motorcycle ie $400 plus/yr.)
Actually it was not so good. I weigh over 90kgs and live in a city at the top of a hill with lots of through traffic. The Moped scooter was more dangerous than a push bike - at least you can sometimes get off the road with that.
I have exchanged the Moped scooter for a 150cc one which can keep up with the traffic. It is not fast for god's sake! It is just reasonably safe. I now pay $440 rego fees to register this for a year. It is hardly worth it for me now. Every 3 years the rego costs equal what this scooter is worth!

register it as a non commercial ambulance. 70$/year.
as long as you're not FJ-level retard, you can legally explain your way through it.

And risk an "Incorrect Registration" charge as well ... A good plan. They're getting tough on them now .... but if you can afford the fine ... go ahead.

Your grammar is at it's best ... and diatribe is at an unusually low standard. You must try harder ... :Offtopic:

As a result of some of the absolute crap sold on trade me and the like, which barely qualified as a machine, but regardless which was stuffed on our roads registered as a moped, the NZTA has decided that Mopeds are no longer VIN exempt.
Thanks very much to the few greedy cunts who sold dangerous crap we all get an extra set of hoops.
So you do have to do the VIN process, but it is still relatively painless for this class of vehicle.

I did an imported Yamaha Jog thru LTNZ, and I would not describe it as painless - more like 3rd degree.
Apparently it is much easier to use the AA than LTNZ.
You are right though, that it gets worse with bigger CC vehicles!

That's just passing the ... "not my fault" ... buck ... Those who ride absolute crap without (a) checking it is safe before using it for extended periods of time. And (b) those that ride absolute crap knowing full well its is crap, without (any intention of) getting anything fixed ... that needs fixed.
It's thanks to those lazy pricks ... any changes to legislation are made in this regard. I have heard that WoF checks could be changed to 12 month periods for all vehicles ... but if the vehicle fail rate increases ... it either wont happen .... Or ... will be changed back to 6 months. The number of vehicles issued tickets by the donut munchers for unsafe vehicles will have influence on this too.

Interestingly, the vehicle checks are 12 monthly in UK, (or were when I lived there). In view of the incredibly fast salt enhanced corosion in UK this always struck me as the wrong way around for NZ / UK.

I have heard of it ... We only get about 12 inches a year. ( A common womens complaint ... apparently )

So, I'm in Japan now. I could easily buy several scooters but am wondering if it wouldreally be worth sending them to NZ.
