Hi Folks.
Just bought a CBR250RR cos they look rather fun (and saving on fuel costs commuting - at least that is what I told the wife).
Looking forward to sounding like a middle aged delinquent teenager on the road. I plan to get it checked and tuned and maybe get done some other mechanicals if necessary, where do you recommend in PN?

Just dont tell her how long tyres (dont) last ... how much parts cost (should something get broken) ... and (my personal favourite) how the shortest way home from work is NOT the way you go, if you are riding a bike.

Oh ... ummmm .... Welcome to the site ...

And don't take things said here too seriously ... :done:

I get my stuff done from Motorcycle Doctors. I find them pretty good.

But they are just limited to Auckland .

Welcome to the site mate.
I'm not entirely sure who to go to in Palmy sorry , I do all my own work
Just being curious, what makes you think it needs a tune?

This site is a bit of a culture shock, but it grows on you with a sense of humour.

Welcome to the madhouse mate.

The guys at City Honda are good to deal with, though all I've had them do is a few tyre changes, I prefer to DIY my bike stuff. Probably a good idea to do some preventative maintenance on her, especially if you don't know the service history.

I've no particular reason to know whether it needs a tune or not as I haven't much to compare it too! I just dont know much about bikes and thought getting a mechanic to go over it thoroughly may prevent a future comment like"sorry mate you flying witchit gumball deflagulator has thrown a whizzle bearing cos you didnt check the timing level manual adjustment attachment....duhh... mechanic passes knowing glance to 12 year old apprentice coz everyone knows they need to do that at least twice every full moon...

Ducatilover knows all about whizzle deflagulators, just give it to him for a hoon!

A tune sounds unnecessary, checking the valve clearances and timing chain free play is a good idea though, checking the plugs while its apart should indicate if it needs a tune. The other indication is it running a bit rough, but if there is likely to be engine damage caused by the tune, chances are it'll show up on the plugs. Oil and filter change, check the air filter element and replace if dirty/clogged, check sprocket and chain for wear/proper adjustment. Regrease wheel/linkage/headstock bearings would be a good idea too.
Those suggestions are all from a DIY perspective, I have no idea how much it would cost to get a shop to do it.

Thanks for that, I'll do some of those and see how it goes, the last owner said he did the filters a while back but of course its better to just get them all done now and get a clean slate.
A qick question, the end of the brake lever is bent 45 degrees at the end from some careless falling off (not mine) it works fine but would it survive being bent back or be likely to snap, or should I just try to fall off at speed in reverse to undo the damage...

Well, fair enough!
Personally, I'd be giving it all a check over as you said and seeing if it needs tuning. The CBRs can develop horrible flatspots (I came across an MC19 a few years back that wouldn't make "power" until 16,000rpm ) but it's usually a matter of giving it a good going over (check floats, jetting, intake boots, airbox seals and valve clearances, and the fuel tap on the MC22 can fuck the fueling up)

Timing chain? It's a CBR, has gears bro, because chains are for mere mortals :Punk:
Won't be overly cheap at a shop  especially if clearances are involved

Bring it to me, and try the falling off in reverse? I will pay to see that

But, heating it may be the best bet?

Never new CBRs had gear driven cams, makes them even cooler in my book!

And just to state the obvious, take the lever off the bike before bending it back, new levers are like 20 bucks, a new master is a little more!

Where would one get a $20 lever from?

I like your technical turn of phrase ... won't catch on though ...

Ummm, maybe prices have gone up since I last bought one, but pretty sure they were around 20 bucks from city honda. Were for my dirtbike though, so perhaps a bit simpler and cheaper as they are a throwaway/often replaced part.

Looking forward to sounding like a middle aged delinquent teenager on the road.

How about sounding like a mature adult instead?
