Whitford Beachlands Maraitai

I was just having a talk to BadLieutenant about a crash that I witnessed when I was 5 or 6 ( 86 or 87)

There was (is?) a straight that had (has) The Whitford Garden Centre on it. It's on the left when you are heading out to Beachlands, past the Pony Club. You turned right 100m up the road to go to the tip and there was a old villa that was used as a real estate office on the corner. Anywho, The crash happened right outside the Garden Centre, 2 motocyclists were hit by a drunk guy in a green starlet. One of them lost their leg.
And I was wondering if anyone knew the bikers that got hit? And if they survived? Dad owned the Garden Centre.

I watched a crash in upper hutt when I was about 8 and the guy went into the side of a house? Freaked me out he just came into the corner to fast.
The main thing I remeber is him getting up and saying fuck and throwing his helmet.

I can still ride every inch of that road in my mind,I knew it so well - but haven't been on it much in years,just too many people on it now.But by 86 I had gone....

Traveled that road everyday for just about 10 years, the last time I went out there was about 4 years ago, they changed the corner just up from the pony club cause of all the kids killing themselves.
They've gay'd that road up hard.

I used to crank all my old bikes and cars up down the big hill after the tip turn off,the lefthander at the bottom required nerves of steel and sometimes I'd wallow onto the other side of the road....then set it up for the nice right,and another left....DAMN!,see,I'm riding it again! Last time I tried that was about 6 yrs ago on my old 1971 XS1,got it over the magic ton,but it was stupid crazy shaking and snorting,I never went that fast on it again.
