Looks like a new katie to replace the 990 has officially broken press as a 1190 and the rumourred 1290 is in the pipeline

EDIT: SERIOUSLY needs a sump bash plate. Have a close look at the pics in the link. 230kg kerb (wet) weight is about the same as the 990 too. Swing arm is trick.

Amazes me that they keep making these huge adventure bikes bigger and more powerful all the time. I guess they are a product of careful market research

KTM's advantage has always been a bit lighter, more off road biased, not making a clone of the 1200GS. 21" and 18" rims vs the more dual purpose 19" and 17" also changes tyre choice. I think I read somewhere the Adventure R would be more dirt orientated and perhaps a straight Adventure more dual purpose.

That said, the 1200GS probably sells more units, but even BMW's own research says most GS are not taken off road and even the GSA is used as a tourer...

I seldom have my v strom off the seal these days but have no problem doing it. But am very aware that it is a big heavy bike to be playing on. Taking my buell on gravel put things back in perspective for me tho!

Quite understandable for most of us, I wouldn't want to try and pick up a Fully laden one..........

Thats cause you where on the wrong type of Buell to really enjoy the gravel..

It's an excellent workout, cheaper than a gym subscription (and nothing else motivates you like being stuck if you can't pick her up)

I took mine on the MMMMM ride a few weeks ago and it was mostly OK, but the tyres I had on it took a lot of the fun out of it in the full on stuff. I posted that I took a knife to a gun fight.

Still a 1190 with a 21 inch front wheel, weighing about the same a wee (wet), and an appropriate set of tyres would be a lot more fun. Not sure about the cost being a lot of fun.

KTM... low fuel consumption

Anyone want to comment on how common 120-70-19 and 170-60-17 tyres are? I haven't heard of them myself...

Yeah you're right. I'd much rather have a 1200GS and bore myself to sleep each day............

Never mind the fact that you pay a bloody fortune for a GSA, and dumping it would be like burning your cash.

Before anyone rides a big Beemer off road they need to spend at least a couple of years on something like a DR or an XR, to get used to the feelmofngravel underneath. However, the reality is that most folk who can afford GSAs are those with successful businesses, no mortgage and a wish to be Charley Boorman.

That DVD was the best marketing that ever happened, but it led folk to think they can all just put on their $5000 riding outfit, mount their $50K fully laden steed and take on the world.

That DVD was the best marketing that ever happened Didn't KTM turn them down first? That must have cost them a gazillion in lost sales that went to BMW.

Uh... Yeah, coz I got a GSA!! I haven't owned a DR or XP either, but my size helps. It's on rebate now, you can buy it for $33.5k I think, damn it's a good buy now, for all the kit you get, except I have a 2010 which is basically identical to the 2012/2013.

You definitely need to accept it has limits compared to a DR... or find them out the hard way

Yes, KTM turned them down (didn't you watch Long Way Round in the collector's edition? :dodge:). I broke my KTM heaps. Well, I've also broken the BMW, but it's definitely tougher than the KTM.

An animated gif of difference between the 19" and 21" R versions at the bottom of the page.

Looks like there would be a good weight saving with an after-market zorst too.

Anyone want all of my spawn? Looks like I'll have to sell a few of the neighbour's as well. The pricing for Europe has just been released and the r version is €14,970.

http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/ktm-1190-adventure-r-pricing-europe/

Current exchange rate is about 62c, so that will be $24k before getting them to this side of the planet and the local dealers making a profit. So peeps, expect them to land for about the same price as the DotCom mansion.
