View Full Version : Thoughts on a MV AGUSTA F4 S EV02

I'm currently in the market for a new bike, I was looking at R1, ZX10R, etc but came across a MV AGUSTA F4 S EV02 at what I think is a reasonable price.

Its been a bike I've loved the look/sound of, but never ridden one...but it does get my blood pumping.

Has anyone ridden one? Owned one? Thoughts on the bike? Problems with them?

Its in CHCH so I can't test ride it to make sure its what I want (and can't find one in Auckland).

"AHEM"

More of an explanation would be helpful...Because he's had one and he'll tell you that a bike you can't actually ride ain't much fun. It's not like a Jap bike... bits drop off on every ride.

I went from an 04 zx10 to a 04/05 MV F4 1000S. Worst motorcycling purchasing decision I've ever made. Broke down 1 out of 3 times I took it out.

The MV is a stunning looking machine. Great bike to look at. Perfect if you don't ride.

Mine had split the radiator by the time I got it home from AMPS. Repaired that and made up some more brackets (the radiator is only held on by two brackets at the top, so it is prone to flexing and cracking).
The electrics packed up several times.
Sometimes it would start, sometimes it would not. It was handy when it chose not to start at home, less convenient when it chose not to start out on a ride.
When it was running it would cover itself in a fine oil mist. Leaked a bit too.

Maybe I rode it too hard? Perhaps if you were to ride one very gently it would be OK?

After a couple of months I swapped it for a 07/08 R1 which started everytime, didn't leak and didn't break down.

In summary, DON'T DO IT :)

Cheers for the info, that's the kind of stuff I need to know.

Secondhand parts are expensive and rare enough as is for common Japanese bikes, so think of the cost and availability of parts for a rare (in NZ) Italian bike.

Price of parts doesn't worry me, but if its going to break down every few rides, that certainly does.

I think they're a bit like a sexy woman with schizophrenic tendencies.
You'll be riding her happily sometimes, other times she'll spit the dummy and leave you crying, broke and fucked wondering why you never took that sweet ethnic girl home.

But they do happen to be the best looking bike ever made :headbang:

They run really hot too. You don't want to be doing less than 100kmh on a hot summer day.

I have a mate who had an MV from new (I forget what model).

His rear wheel bearing shit itself within about 10,000kms.

It cost something like $1500 just for the bearing.

Needless to say the bike was just out of warranty.

I have a whole updated hub, complete, he can have that for $1000. (and yes its still mint)

Just like someone elses wife, I'd ride it once or twice, but I'll never take it home.

As Doc pointed out, there was 3 MV's that actually made it to the Cold Kiwi under there own power.... that must be some sort of record...
That's unless they came by the trailers parked at the gate and rolled down the hill.......

Done almost 40,000 km's on mine now within the last 2 years riding all year around. Great to work on (much easier than any other bike to dismantle very quickly).

Never had anything fall off, never over heated (this was more prone in the 1000's you stated it's an ev02 so it's a 750)

Keep an eye on the rear wheel bearing if you catch them before they take out the Hub then you are looking at around 120 for bearing kit (happened to me, replace\service mine every 6000 km's now)

Other than that if you look after them, they are just fantastic bikes to own!

Done 7000ks on my 07 senna so far no dramas at all. How the radiator is prone to cracking ive got a bracket that supports the left side so no dramas there. The hub if you look after it properly it wont fail if your worried about it you can buy a mitch hub for 1k,waterpump cause they run hot around town due to them retard the timing so much you can go to a aftermarket moto course pump for 1k.Or put a manual switch in for the fans so you can turn them on early. I just did those things as soon as I brought it cause I didnt want any dramas.
