Rito, we've got the shit talk about Wellington buckets.
who's coming to Mt Wellington this weekend?
Saturday is practice, no engines before 9.30. Sunday is race day, no engines before 9.30. racing will start around lunch time (whatever time we usually do, I dunno, I don't wear a watch).

Saturday will be dependent on how many turn up, what turns up and basically the usual. anyone who wants some time on their own, just let us know.

Make sure you have signed on before heading on the track. fee is $10 AMCC members, $20 non members and motards - for practice day. Race day is more, but more fun.

hopefully the weather will be like the past couple of days, but who knows. See ya there :)

Keep bagging the gear like that and you might lose your factory ride :)

See you on the grass somewhere.

I will be there; been long enough too. Will pay good money for someone getting lapped to take out Dave M or Little Diprose. Will have the 50 there as well.

Bloody good day, weather started out a bit crap but cleared up nicely, good battles in all classes and sliding the sidecar both into and out of the infield was a blast.

I had the worlds shortest bucket weekend, suceeding in falling off after 1 1/2 laps of practice getting a partially collapsed lung, a couple of cracked ribs and a mild concussion. The worst bit was I wasn't even trying to go fast, just warming the bike up when the front decided to slap on me a pitched me off. Thanks Henk for checking I was ok and Nick for carting me around various doctors & hospitals.

Next month I will survive practice!

I cracked a rib and broke my foot during a warm up lap on a bucket once.....

Gah...

Yeah I had the trailer packed and ready to go, but some stuff came up with Racecar. Spent sunday on the mill fixing mistakes in a CNC'd transmission bulkhead that some numpty had made, and replacing bearings in a transmission that said numpty f'd by not checking for runout in a shaft the last time said bearing failed. I will definitely hopefully make it next time. (Oh and said numpty was not me (just for clarification... (brackets within brackets (what is this? inception?(okay I'm done)))))

I don't s'pose anyone found a black goPro box hanging around? It got left there when we were testing the car mid week. Nothing too valuable in it just some mounts and a cable.

And Henk, watch this space for another sidecar. Plans in the works for an FXR powered ground-effect sidecar producing silly downforce (30kg plus). Just need to convince someone to be my partner in crime. We wont be sliding into the infield, the wheels will be firmly planted on the deck. May be outside the edge of rules, given 75mm ground clearance is required, but where is the fun in that?
Now who has some kart wheels?

Not trying to be a complete arse here but if you are going to build a chair build it to the rules, the minimum height is to stop bits grinding into the track surface and I'd hate to have all sidecars thrown out because one did some track damage. If we try and explain to the kart guys that the problem was one illegal rig that was thrown out after the fact they'll be asking us why it wasn't thrown out beforehand.

It will be a big foam-cored fiberglass undertray with a kevlar base hanging down to 20mm above the ground. Other than that the the chair will be in spec. Also will cover the entire underside of chair. Much better even than having nothing at all.

We run an R6 powered car around Mt Welly with an undertray that has an interference fit with the ground (ie scrapes along), and nobody gives a flying fuck. (Also have the supercharged version but currently not running. Soon though, very soon).

Point noted though. Would be a bit of fun to have a stupid sized diffuser tunnels coming out the back of a chair. Also a good learning exercise in CFD.

Also planning to put a rear view camera on so you can have video of yourself racing.

That's all well and good but our days at Mt Wellington are numbered and when we move to the new track at Wiri you'd better believe people will give a flying fuck. On top of that we have enough trouble getting people to stick to the rules regarding nylon etc as it is so I'd be a bit leery of having something else there that was obviously outside the rules to avoid people having the option of pointing at it and saying " but you let him get away with it, why are you picking on me" and if you believe that won't happen you obviously have never been involved in running something with rules where the great unwashed public can rock up and join in. You wouldn't believe the amount of time I spent explaining to people exactly why they couldn't ride dirt bikes in a forest full of ankle breaking stumps why they couldn't ride in gumboots.

:brick::brick::brick::brick::brick::brick::brick:: brick::brick::brick::brick::brick:If you are going to build it, build it to the rules and stop being a dick.

Sure I love the engineering and technology you are using on the car. But take it as a lesson for the real world once you graduate; regardless of what sort of engineering you are studying (coming from me as a lowly Civil Engineer) the first fucking thing you need to learn is what the spec is and build it to that spec. If you don't you have failed your client and he has every right to withhold payment, meaning no dinner on the table.

In this case the MNZ rule book is the spec.

Whatever you guys have permission to run at Mt Wellington as part of the Uni project is irrelevant to this conversation.

Forsome reason I thought you guys hung around a bit after your crash, so thought you must be okay. Hope to see you back soon, but take it easy.

I did see a go pro box inside one of the tire stacks which surrounds the flag point at the end of the straight closest to the pits. Probably had something in it but was also full of water so I just dropped it back where I found it. There is a working bee there this saturday at 9 am so get in there then as it may well be chucked out as part of the clean up.

I also lost the nose guard thing off my helmet during the weekend if anyone picked it up???

What flavour helmet? I have a couple of Shark nose gaurd things around that are never going to get used.

For the car we have a rule book thicker than a small novel to work to. So that isn't really a valid point to make. There is a rule for just about evrything you could ever think of, and it grows every year.

I am quite sure that this discussion is the definition of the phrase 'Mountain out of a mole hill'.

It was more of a 'that would be cool' kind of statement. But keep in mind that this would be a completely removable item. Other than that it would be inside the rules. I am not talking an illegal engine or any sort of dangerous attachment.

Anyway in the unlikely even that I ever get a sidecar to the track,,, don't really know where I am going with this. Way too tired to care (or should that be three tyred?)

But two questions to finish: What is the ground clearance of your sidecar Henk? And what is the ground clarence of a kart?

I am really not trying to be a dick here. Really. Just thought it would be an interesting thing to try in a reasonably relaxed class with low numbers and therefore a low number of complainents. Even to use on practice days and take off to race. Apparently not.

Maybe I should just go and build a hill climb car instead. Now if I could just find a spare $30k

Interesting pic of how big these diffusers get for a low speed car http://www.flickr.com/photos/jhsohn/7119240567/

Sidecar is just about optimal geometry to build a nice ground effect diffuser for. And cheap to race.

You are probally right with moutain out of mole hill; however I am a big beliver in the rules being the rules and we should stick to them. The whole challenge is comming up with cool stuf that fits within the rules.

It is the thin edge of the edge type argument.

I also was involved in boat racing for a long time before I started racing bikes. We had several capacity clases that were SMOC (Standard Motor Open Cockpit), but the classes become an absolute joke and it took years and some large bans to competitiors before we started to clean up the class, because as one person cheated to gain an edge, his competitor had to do somthing, and so on and so on. The SMOC became known as Secerlty Modified Open Cockpit.

Personally the pit bikes are the thin edge of the wedge for me, and that horse to a large extent has bolted, but the gate still needs to be shut (I guess that is what I am trying to do). Yes we are trying to sidecars going again, but it is a wasted excersie if the only way to do it by non complient chairs.

Agreed on all counts.

IF I end up building a chair it will be absolutely compliant. And IF I were to experiment with and under tray on it it would be in addition to a compliant chair and removable should there be a real problem with running it for whatever reason.
I guess that it would leave the door open for the next joker to say "well he bent that rule... i will bend this one but in a much more permanent way." And like the pit bikes that is not a door you want to leave even a little ajar.

Points taken.

Not sure what the ground clearance on ours is but Brenton told me that when he built it he built it to the rules. Plenty of cool shit you can do within the rules, Cully is playing with a hub center steer setup at the moment.

Hey Moooools just my two cents but having spent the last couple of years dragging rigs up to the track to get people interested im hoping you don't get put off, no one here would be more keen to see another rig on the track than us chair guys so build away. If you want a challenge and to try some thing to impress maybe look at hub centre steering or a sprung leading link front end. I was talking to a guy who knows as much about sidecar racing as anyone around and he suggested for tracks like Mt Wellington or similar maybe build a shorter rig than the ones we are coming up with and try a front mounted engine, really there are a lot of options to explore with out going outside the rules.
Hope to see you with three wheels down the line.
