View Full Version : The price of 250's

NC
7th August 2005, 08:34
My flatmate has just gone down to CHCH to pick up a bike that he brought. Now I haven't look at the price of 250's for a while. But I was fucken pissed off to see the price of them, I brought a 93 ZXR250C when I was 21 for $4500, that's a bloody good price from a dealership. It had 20 000kms on it. Now I see that they are going for $7000? $6000? That's a fucken ripoff! The bikes have 40k on them and most of them are not that tidy..
And I brought a ZXR250A for $800, spent a $1000 getting it on the road. But it was a minter. Low K's etc.. Now I see one with 50k's shitty as going for $5000...

Bloody capitalism.
I really feel for the people that are just getting into bikes, in another thread people were talking about pay $300 for their basic handling skills test, they got a bike for the day and passed the test etc.
Mine costed a whopping $115 7 years ago.

It's nice to see that there are more bikers on the road, but this is fucken sickening to see that everyone is going crazy and ripping the n00bs off.

But remember that you have to take you're viagra atleast 60 minutes before you start, and you might need some reading material. you know, just to keep yourself sitmulated.

I'm just trying to make a point that it's not fair that the shops are keeping the prices up which is pushing the price up of everything else for the n00bs.
But NARH the fucken old CUNTS group has to come in and wave the stick of cunts about.

Oh dear.... hit a nerve did he?

Well, he does have a good point... 3k for a NEW GN250 is bloody good... all be it slow as shit.
To spend 6k on a ZXR250 is mad, an the buyer would do well to wait untill they had their full license and got what they really wanted.
I think License rules would have to change for learners to get better value.

I'm keeping an eye out at the mo for a 66-69 Mustang Cage. They're costing 20-30 grand nowdays, would have got an awesome one for 10-12 Grand about 8 years ago.

Wasn't this a thread on 250 prices?

I was fairly lucky. My bike was still 5500 but it had low k's and was mint. The guy said he could've sold it for 8000 (so he says). Shame I had to go and wreck it

In Palmy North the other day, i saw a CBR with 80,000ks for 5500, next to it was a ZXR with 60,000ks for 5500. Also at TSS, they have the worst looking CBR I have ever seen, crappy fairings, rusty, 80,000ks, still it was 5500!!!!

My friend has an RGV250 its an 89 mint condition and has 25,000kms on the clock hes has it for a month and paid $3500 for it.
Why get a 250cc motorbike for $5000 when you can get a automatic scooter. A mate got a gillera Runner for $900 three weeks ago and it does 0-100 faster than a wrx its you bolt on a farbrizi kit $2.5k for everything including labour you will have a scooter that puts out 33hp at the rear wheel and does 170km/hr and because its an automatic its alwase in power.

simple example of supply & demand isn't it? The manufacturers haven't made new race-rep 250's (e.g. ZXR, CBR, GSX-R) for a few years, so there aren't many coming in from Japan anymore. They may not be litre sportbikes, but they go fast enough and crash hard enough, leaving fewer and fewer behind...

If I was starting all over again, I would have gone for one of the "sub-250" learner legal bikes like the FXR150 or RG150. They're good value for money and reasonably priced. TwoSmoker started out on an RG150 and it has hardly slowed him down (hell it's probably responsible for him getting up to speed so fast).

to the old 81 RD250LC, sure needed a few more hundred spent for a top end rebuild. But I respect that bike, no taking the yammyfart on the MX track to kill it (but it was fun to do it to my old GN250 :devil2: ).

THose bikes are not new (the australian site). THey stopped making zx2r's in 95 or 96 and now they are flogging them off a '2005 compliant' with a new paint job and new tyres. thats even worse than here (and they are over 6k... dollar would bring it to around 7k for here :/). Stupid australians, and I bet they are restricted to the days by the bastards in power over there.

So yeah... at least NZ is not repainting bikes and selling them as 'recomplianced 2005' instead of 1991 'repainted' zxr etc etc

Flyingpony
7th August 2005, 16:18
So yeah... at least NZ is not repainting bikes and selling them as 'recomplianced 2005' instead of 1991 'repainted' zxr etc etc

Was wondering what they meant by 'compliance 2005'. Thought it was some legal law situation or insurance thing. If it's only repainted, then just say so.

Did find it odd that a 2005 model was cheaper than a 2000 model and how there was only $500 difference. How can these old bikes have such few km's done? Strikes me as odd. They should do at least 3,000km per year.

I own a FXR150 sport bike. Compared it to 250cc sport bikes, but for only an extra 100cc they were just so much more expensive and 2nd hand units had so high km, poor condition or very old. Many 250cc sports costs more than 400c bikes :weird: The famous GN wasn't included in my comparisons because it's not a sport model.

When I compared my 150cc sport to a 250cc sport, I only look at price, year, km's and general condition. Because a 250cc bike be it a 1 cylinder or 4, they have the same rough performance.

Edit: 08/08/2005
Most of my comparisons were done between 4-stroke brand new or less than 2yrs old at that time in 2001. The idea of getting an older 2nd hand unit quickly got dropped because I didn't want a bike with problems as mine was unreliable and hence had to go. Primary transport must be reliable without a doubt.

Yes I understand 4 inlines have more power than singles or twins. Should also add that at that time, 4 inlines weren't compared because their engines were wide and made them look heavy - not something as a then learner I'd like.

Had envisioned the FXR would be replaced with a SV650S after 1yr when my full was obtained. Life changed so that didn't happen.

ZorsT
7th August 2005, 16:30
the 250 sport bikes are overpriced because of demand, they are always needed so the nazi dealers can charge more, therefore the private prices go up because people can get more for them.

My bike cost me $700, although it is rusty, had a broken speedo cable, and is all scratched, it didn't have reg or WOF either. It needs a new back tyre real soon. I think i got a good deal though

I got mine for $1500. 11000 kms on the clock, excellent condition (except for all the sticker someone slapped on it).

I have posted this before somewhere but I cbf dragging it up. Basically they are 'sorta' thinking about it as the market is picking up again (esp NZ).

They would be roughly $9000 new for a zxr/cbr though. Would you pay that much for a restricted/'slower than the old ones' zxr/cbr with new plastic shape etc?

Didn't think so.

A zx2r styled like a zxSEXr would be quite.. ... nice to say the least :D

My daughter's partner has bought a couple of ZXR250Cs from them at $4995. (One had a wee accident). Seem to be tidy enough. I think they have about 3 in stock at the moment at $4995.
Do you think that the low Ks they had on there are legit?

I mean, 6,000kms for a 13 year old bike = possibly dodgey.

You can never be sure. Paul's two both had about 20000k on them and the way it's been explained to me by another dealer, that could easily be legit. (apparantly the Japanese don't get to ride very far, very often).
When I bought my CB400 it had 7200 km on the clock and was 13 years old. I was fairly comfortable with that though as the tyres looked really old (cracked and perished but there wasn't much tread off them...so old but not done too many ks.). Nothing has happened in the 4 months I've had it to make my think the kms weren't legit. Got it from a different dealer though.

The 250s certainly don't seem to be as good value as the 150s. I bought a new RG150 in 1998 for about $4000 and had it for four years without any trouble. Admittedly it wasn't the most learner-friendly bike for a total beginner, but once I could ride, it never bored me. I had to be careful when overtaking in head winds, but that bike got me everywhere I wanted to go and I loved it.

Then I had a lapse in judgement and bought the BMW - lovely bike, just a bit too wide and heavy for me so it sits in the garage and doesn't get ridden. When I decided to downgrade and buy something I could have fun on again like the RG, I considered the KRR150 and also the VTR250. The 150 was an excellent price but I wasn't keen on going back to a kickstart with skinny tyres and a tiny tin can, and I thought the VTR was hideously expensive for a 250. I looked at some Jap imports in Auckland but ended up buying a new Goose - Suzuki SG350N. Paid $6500 for it and it is magic. I love it and it hardly gets time to cool down between rides! Spending about $7000 on a 250 to me is crazy - unless they keep their price second-hand. The old story - captive market, they don't have a choice if they want a learner bike and want it new.

it aint the dealers keeping the price up - the market rules as long as people will pay it - they will charge it - if they dont sell at that price the price will fall.

ecomonics of capitalism.
