Never ridden a motorcycle in my life, up until last saturday, and my basic handling test instructor/trainer thought i did ok. So as of today i now hold my 6L. I thought it was funny enough to post on here (as I have visited as a guest in this forum before) but it seems I posted it in the wrong section. What a tool.
Well i hope to stick around and post a bit and look forward to getting to know you all.

It's kinda late to get much response from a lot of working folk, so welcome to the site!
I seem to be someone who collects hobbies & then drops them. Riding motorcycles is definitely an exception; I have been doing that nearly all my life & am still addicted.
Enjoy your new hobby & addiction!

Welcome to 2 wheels, or sometimes 3 wheels as I own a Spyder. Like Sootie I also collect hobbies but riding bikes is more than a hobby, it gets into your soul. The problem is that you can never find the 'right' bike and must change them regularly in order to continue the quest. Or is that just me...........

Well the next part of my 'quest' will probably be the best. Buying my first bike and gear. My day off tomorrow (tuesday) so that means shopping time. I've got at least two bike shops I want to visit and sit on some bikes. So excited and I'm being slightly immature and making engine sounds as i move around the house

Welcome to the mad house. If you have been spying on it as a guest you will already know you have to separate the wheat from the chaff yourself. Enjoy your shopping, it is better fun than hardware stores :pinch:

It is a whole etiquette thing this waving. You really need to be up with the play!
Big bikes never wave to little bikes
Little bikes never wave to big bikes
Big bikes nearly always wave to other big bikes
Little bikes occasionally wave to other little bikes
Oh yes; Only Harleys wave to other Harleys! (Quite right too)
Then there is the loneliness factor. If it is lonely enough even bikers & cagers wave to each other!
In parts of Australia, if you are beside your vehicle in a lonely place (probably broken down) the law requires that any motorist must actually stop and talk to any other motorist & make sure they are OK!
Anyway, enjoy getting the hang of it all, it still cracks me up! :killingme

So I should only wave to other little bikes occasionally and maybe cagers if I'm lonely? It will have to be when I'm stationary because I wouldn't dare to let go of one hand just yet. What are the consequences of waving to a harley? I'll only wave to myself in a reflective surface if I know I will wave back

Yeah, well, this can mean "hello I see you" (you know - the old african tribal greeting) OR
Watch out for the radar cop up ahead (1 flash = 20kms odd / 10 fast flashes = hit the brakes now!) OR
I have an old motorcycle with headlight that bobs up & down when it feels like it. LOL

Absolutely right man! I can't wait until next week so I can take my bike out on the highway and ride it like every one else (same speed and not limited to 70km)!! :headbang:

Why are you limited to 70km? Do you perhaps need to review the road rules? I think you are about a year late.

Why are you limited to 70km? Do you perhaps need to review the road rules? I think you are about a year late.
Well when I got my learners last year the rules were that you can't ride faster the 70km on your learners and recently I found out that there are new rules coming which will take effect on 1 October 2012 and also it includes the new power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne and
an upper engine capacity limit of 660cc.
So I'm not sure if I'm year late or the new rules will come into effect next week.

The speed limit for learners was lifted 1 October 2011, check the NZTA site (http://nzta.govt.nz/resources/roadcode/motorcycle-road-code/about-licences/stage-1-learner.html)
What are the conditions of a learner licence?
You must not ride a motorcycle with an engine capacity greater than 250cc.
You must not ride between 10pm and 5am.
You must display an L (learner) plate on the back of your motorcycle at all times when you are riding. Failure to display L plates could result in 25 demerit points and a fine of $100.
You must have your learner licence with you whenever you are riding.
You must not carry a passenger.
You must not tow another vehicle.
There is a zero alcohol limit if you are under 20. That means if you ride after consuming even one drink you can be charged with drink driving. If you have an alcohol level of less than 150 micrograms per litre of breath and less than 30 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood you could be fined and given 50 demerit points. If your alcohol limit is higher, you could be disqualified from driving, given 50 demerit points and either fined or imprisoned.
If you're 20 or older, the legal alcohol limit is 400 micrograms per litre of breath or 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.
Breaching the learner conditions of your driver licence (other than failing to display L plates) could result in you receiving 35 demerit points and a fine of $100. If you breach any other conditions of your driver licence you could receive 25 demerit points and be subject to a fine of $400.
I didn't see any speed restriction there.
Power to weight rather than cc restriction comes in on Monday but the 70k limit has already gone.
Found a media release (http://www.nzta.govt.nz/about/media/releases/1405/news.html) for you from 2011
Changes coming for learner motorcycle licence holders
28 Sep 2011 | National Office
Learner motorcycle licence holders will be able to drive at similar speeds as vehicles travelling around them on open roads when updated traffic rules come into force this Saturday (1 October).

Mate I wave to anyone and I have even been known to stop and ask a Hardly rider if he was OK, turns out ( so he says) he was getting his rain gear out.
Never yet deliberately ridden past another biker on the road side without a r u OK nod, wave, you know the drill.
Merlin don't feel sorry get even man. go for lots of rides and enjoy your now ingrained riding ability and most importantly , still, ride your own ride, if that means not going as fast or as hard into a corner as the guy in front of you, don't, look out for you first and foremost.
Have fun on those great BIG open roads now ya hear.
