im looking at bikes at the moment as a potential buyer, one thing i dont get is that when i jump on trademe an look at bikes (mainly viragos and intruders) the price differnce between a 250 and for example a 1100, the diference is minimal considering the size of the bike. i can sit my restricted motorcycle licence now but i figure whats the point in spending 5g on a nice 250 when i could get triple the size for the same price? any clues? cheers

triple?, mm, that would be 750, too big,. lol
Hey, but what sort of experience have you had riding?
Sometimes a 250 is all you need for the first couple of years till you learn how to control a bike well.
In saying that, you could be one of the few who learn their road skills fast, and are able to control a larger bike.
Just dont try to run untill you can walk.
Prices of bikes can vary for many reasons, popularity, age, mileage done, cost of maintenance.
but then there are some cheap bigger bikes that just dont know how to stop.....running reliably that is

To some exstent the 250cc bikes were a captive market as far as being a leaner requirement...
But as of the 1st of Oct bikes up to 660cc will be leaner approved apart from a few
of the higher power to weight ratio models... The LAMS site gives a list of bikes you
can & can't have...

I don't think you're comparing apples with apples. You can pick up a good two-year-old 250 Virago for $5K. A Virago 1100 for $5K will be perhaps 20 years old (they haven't been made for over 15 years).

the reason is due to the outgoing retarded restriction on cc ratings for learner and restricted licence holders that sort of creates a monopoly effect for the owners of 250cc bikes. Its almost like they gather secretly and agree to advertise their bikes for ridiculously high prices . . .
You could buy a bigger bike and take the risk, or take your pick from the LAMS list and get something larger and still restricted legal

Buy Canadas GN250 for 1500 and it will still be worth that when you resell it if you look after it and keep the rust away. At 8km its a good buy. Looks tidy also.

dont expect anything on the lams list to be cheap the stealers who were asking 6k for a 20 year old 250 will be onto that
