Calling all electrical workers - Public Service Announcement

Hi All,

I am on the review committee that is rewriting the Electrical Qualifications for NZ. Our task is to streamline and come up with a new qualification that incorporates core theory and practical skills that electrical workers should have from Levels 2 through to registration. We will be writing the qualifiactions and expected outputs. This process cannot happen without input from the wider electrical industry, nor do we have any desire to keep people out of the loop, because no doubt they will moan if that happens, which is why I have posted here. So if you are an electrician, installer, repairer etc and would like to offer your thoughts, recommendations etc I am happy to take them on board when I go to Wellington. For a start I reckon more line spacing is in order.

Aside from that there is a cynicism that no matter what we feedback it won't be taken seriously.

UMMMM Surely direct communication with all registered electricians would have considerable more benefit that a post on Kiwibiker.
Have you also posted to mountain bike sites,skiers, mini 7 racers, skateboarders. parachuters just to get a balanced opinion.

Just make sure the new qualification is recogised in Australia...it'll save a lot of time requalifying when the guys leave NZ.....

Oh, and put time limits on apprentice training - for the employer.
One apprentice at my old place of work left the trade because his supervising employer could never find the time to sign off his work.

There are a lot of electrical qualifications out there apart from the simple electrical registration. How about Power station operaters; electrical linesmen; system operators and controllers; substation operators etc. Many of thes are at NCEA levels 4, 5 or 6 of which the latter ones are a touch harder than electrical registration, so I'm very pleased to see that the electrical qualifications are being brought into line.

most of our rules in the electrical trade and LAMS and other shit is simply picked from the aussie rules anyway.
bosses don't want to sign people off cause then they'll have to pay them for a higher skill

Hi All,

I appreciate the feedback and emails I am getting. To those that have emailed if I'd like to "spark" something up.....the answer is happy to oblige on the condition that I get to do it with an Insulation Resistance Tester :devil2:

In response to some of the posts....yes it has been a closed door process in the past. However consultation notices for this review (also called the TRoQ) have been going out since July 2011 but many are just not seeing/reading them so I recommend that you subscribe to e-newsletters from the EWRB, NZEI, ECANZ etc. Also because this information is not being trickled down through official channels posting on Social Media Sites is another option to get the message through to industry. Hence why I have posted here amongst other sites. I suspect many of you are at this stage are oblivious to the fact that the Governor General signed off on the new regulations on Monday and they come into effect on the 1st July 2013. Regulations 58 to 74 have been completely rewritten. There are also new forms, testing procedures etc coming out. Argh! I know but please don't shoot the messenger!


By all means please discuss this with friends and colleagues and email me your thoughts/opinions/recommendations. The question you need to ask is.......

"What should an electrician know by the time they finish their apprenticeship and are eligible for registration and a PL?"



P.S For the sparkies that have always joked that plumbers were wanna be electricians...... Plumbers' training is now under the jurisdiction of the Electrotechnolgy Industry Training Organisation :laugh:

What you actually buy them? Jeez you're honest.

I have emailed marnie & let her know my own real concern - that they are written so us absic house basher/ commercial type sparkies can actually understand them.
I know there are a lot of cleverer characters here & in the trade than I, however I made bit of an effort to keep up with the last set of regs. Some parts were great ie the damp situations diagrams however on the whole it was pretty bloody tricky & extremely boring (for me anyway) to read.
Bullet points would have been useful.

Many other sparkies I talked to around the smoko table simply didn't know or didn't really care. i've been in the game about 20 yrs now & have seen so much hype, liability scaremongering & other crap that I don't get too bothered nowadays. I like so many other sparkies will prob carry on as we have always been going & wait till the next round of regs are written up & thrown at us.
