Thanks for the quick reply. No offence but I don't know any sport bike slang so the only thing I recognised was the Ducati 848 (one in the local Suzuki shop so I can test ride that thanks). I don't know what a late sv is and as for a trumpet, I'm lost buddy. Does that mean some kind of triumph?

Nice rhyme there sinfull but Triumph has been Trumpet since before the advent of the term sprotbike. Or is that sprotbiek? Your own slang perhaps? Burn.
Thou has been short for thousand since engine builders first became.
As for SFA - you may find the OP doesnt understand either but it hardly matters

Are you two trying to get him killed???? From a lumbering Boulevard (no offence mate) to a Busa or a ZX14?
The Suzie SV is a good choice (But I don't rate them that high - especially the 650) ... but try one ... then try the Trumpet of Duke ...

Go find a 2005/2006 Suzuki GSXR1000, and take it for a ride. There is simply not a sports bike out there to date, that delivers that much power in such an exhilarating manner.

It's an S83/V1400 which seems to have an indicated top speed of 105 mph - or 169 kph .. that's pretty close to what a GSXR1000 will do in first ..

Thanks guys. OP here. I'm genuinely interested and not just trying to kick off a sport bike thread. I started on a 250 Aquilla, went up to a 750 Honda Shadow ACE and then to my S83. I've been riding for around 18 months and have gone through my licencing stages in the shortest possible time due to my age. I'm 6ft and 100kgs and cruisers were just a comfortable fit. Now I'm a bit more experienced on a bike I'm thinking about either getting a sportbike as well as my S83 or moving to sportbikes next. I'm not a hoon (passed the urge to do stoppies or wheelies long ago) and just want some genuine advice on what to take for a test ride that won't scare the shit out of me and put me off. Thanks all.

Look man, we're gonna give you shit even if your real identity turns out to be Jorge Lorenzo.
Ok, at 6ft and being about average size, a thou is gonna "fit" best to sit on. If you have a brain and are sensible about it, (nothing personal, but it would be unusual if you are), you will be fine having a ride on one, or even owning one.
Carbureted R1's are good bikes, solid all round power, and nice bike to ride.
Injected R1's pre crossplane, is the roomiest, but be warned it's one of the better bikes for everywhere mental power.
Crossplane R1. I bloody hate the motor on these. People swear by the crossplane, I'm sure they are just sold on the hype. The power delivery is snappy and twitchy with the bike in A mode. Never saw the point in the other modes, but might be better. Bike feels OK to ride otherwise.
ZX10's. Too many variants to list. Generally, small and mental.
Gixxer K1/2. Smooth, fast, neutral position, borderline touring bike, if they weren't so fuckin fast and handle so well.
Gixxer K3/4. Slightly more aggressive than the model before, less neutral ride, better brakes. I couldn't fault the brakes on the K2, so I don't see why they needed upgraded.
Gixxer K5/6 is as we've said, the absolute mentalist, stupidist, deadliest, BESTEST bike ever made. Know your shit before ya give one of these a hoon if you wanna go fast.
Gixxer K7/8 is more refined than the K6. It's faster but doesn't feel like it.
No experience beyond that for me.
You want a real thrill, ride an RF900 though. Nothing on the list above compares.
Be fuckin careful man. You have next to no experience at all, nomatter how many k's you've clocked up in a year and a half.
Enjoy.

a crossplane R1. some love them, some are apathetic towards them. I find their power delivery intoxicating, its just . . . different, and i love that. definitely try it for the sake of comparison and something different.
and a 675, a screaming triple, for the same reason, its different.

I am not sure whay you are wanting to leap from a cruiser straight to a supersport. You say that your abilities have improved and you would like to step up to a bike that will perhaps allow you more 'freedom' to ride a road with more spirit. However, why don't you look at an intimediary first, say a Suzy Bandit or a big standard of some description?
This way you get the extra thrust that you're after, also the cornering ability goes up 10 fold, but you're still on a comfortable and forgiving steed that will allow you to make a few mistakes without trying to gut you when you make a wrong move?
Others may not agree with me on this and my opinion comes from the fact that I do a lot of riding on rutted, pot holed and other wise goat trackish roads. However, I don't think that supersports make any sense unless you're getting into track days, that is after all what they're designed for right?
Fast Eddie

if you can't swap between cruiser style bike and sports bike and ride them both safely then maybe one shouldn't ride at all..

I swap from 4 wheels to 3 to 2, then sometimes 1, then 2 again.. ain't no thang!

Drew is right ... you have limited experience yet ... it's all on cruisers and a mille sports bike will scare they shit out of you ... (probably scare the shit out of me too ...) Sports bikes wilo feel very very different to a cruiser ...

Good suggestions - I've ridden twins and singles most of my life - five years ago I bought a Suzie four - and it was so much fun ... if I had known how much fun the fours were I would have had them years ago ..

Bandits are fucking FUN ... I have a 650 (carbed) and a 1250 (injected) ... they give you the speed and response of the fours, wthout the aggressivenes of the supersports bikes. I've seen 213 on the clock on the 650 (and been to 180klicks in 5th gear - they are both six speeds - and the 1250 was still accelearating at 245 klicks when I shut it down ... (and yeah, I know the speedos are notoriously inaccurate)
I'd recommend the 650 Bandit as an intermediate bike ... (I'm six foot and close to 100 kilos .. and I fit on the easily ... and comfortably - and do long distances) - get some experience on one and then move up to the mlle sports models ... you'll still be alive in a year's time ..

Suzuki GSX1300 (or is it 1400 now)
Suzuki Bking
Yamaha XJR
Honda Preditor
Triumph Speed Triple
Aprila Turno
Ducati 900 Monster
All will make your intruder feel like a brick, but have a more upright style that I personally find better for any extended period of time, or at legal road speeds.
I myself would still love a K6 GSXR750. Test rode one before I bought the Speed Triple, and would have bought it, but owning that bike and having my licence seemed mutualy exclusive to one another

I am actually with drew on this one.
Dangsta - Book out a day and walk into your closest bike shop and say "I am feeling feed up with my cruiser and want to try somthing different" then point to the first sports bike that takes your eye and say "that one be would nice, here are my licence details, I will see you in 30min to an hour".
Ride it, not just motorway, but find a few corners. Then repeat with as many as the shop will let you. If they get feed up go to another shop and repeat.
Testing bikes is fucking fun.

Yup. You'll spend more time changing gear than holding full throttle and if you're not careful the end of the straight bit arrives before your brain catches up. They stop good too. With practice.

You appear to be a sensible polite chap so how'd you end up here with us?
Please understand that a sports bike is very different to sit on and ride from what you are used to. Its cramped to begin with. Some people get sore backs and find the seats are thin. Sports bikes don't make long journeys easy - which explains why cruisers are popular.
I do speak from experience going from a BMW to a Ducati ST4 (which has an injected watercooled 916cc motor). The first test ride I nearly rode into the back of a car at 160+ because I was inexperienced and had no idea of my speed.
Nevertheless, loved the bike and no regrets.

I can vouch for that... I tried a few bikes with my dodgy wrist and couldn't cope with the really sporty handlebars. The more upright sportstourer with the higher and flatter bars are perfect though. Perhaps being a woman with shorter arms makes it more of a problem.

As above, try a few on. When I had an older CBR600f4 I went to try a few bikes out at the shop. One new a new new CBR600 and one of the other being a VFR800. The CBR was a LOT more hunched over, thin seat, peaky power etc etc where as the VFR was a lot more like the f4 in that there was a bit more size and comfort to it, the riding position was a lot more relaxed but it still went fairly well. You could tell straight away which one you would feel comfortable on for a few hours at a time. The CBR600 was a great bit of fun, but after half an hour I wanted my old bike back. The VFR on the other hand I could have stayed on for hours on end quite happily. Probably the same reason I've ended up with the bike I'm on now and have no desire to change it.

I'm bored to will throw in my 2 cents. The 675 is a really nice machine. Not badly prices either. the New F3 by MV Agusta is also a sweet little ride. I test rode one of them and really liked it but having ridden liter bikes I missed the power.
For a first super-bike you wont go wrong with any of the main 600cc bikes. GSXR, Baby Blade, etc. Just go and ride one, any one, as a start... and see where that leads you.
