View Full Version : Selling my cage, going all in

I've come to a realization recently.
When I first decided to take the leap from 2 smoke MX bikes to a road bike, the choice was based entirely on cheap transport to commute to work in rush hour Auckland traffic.

Over the years I changed my habits in stages:
1. Only taking the bike on sunny days to work.

2. Only taking the cage to work on fridays and driving on weekends, otherwise commuting to work on the bike unless it was really shit weather wise.

3. Commuting on the bike 5 days a week rain or shine, only caging on the weekends.

For the past month now, I have driven my cage only once and when I drive it, I am wishing I was on the bike. So I thought, "why do I even have a car?".
So I'm flicking the 4 wheeler and going 2 wheels exclusive, why the hell not? :niceone:

-More space in the shed for playing with my motors and other projects.
-Setting up a home Gym.
-Not needing an excuse to jump on the bike and go for a burn on weekends.

Is anyone else wrestling with this decision?
What's holding you back?

Welcome to the 'club' Phantom. I've only owned 5 cars in my entire life. Sometimes (like grocery shopping, or buying large items) it can be a pain in da ass. But otherwise?

Personally I've never needed an excuse, I just prefer being on a bike, weather isn't an issue :niceone:

I'm planning on doing that too, only thing stopping me selling the car is the crack in the windscreen that I need to get around to having fixed. I know I don't need a car cause I haven't used it since the start of the year.

Same .. I've had five cages since 1974 .. an Austin A40, A Morrie thou, a Hillman Hunter, a Holden Ute (westie dream machine) and now a Nissan Terrano ... (tows the boat)

I leave the Terrano for the wife (except when I need to tow the boat) ... basically ride all year round ... Yeah . shopping can be a pain, but when I was single (and didnt have any kind of cage) I got a week's worth of graceries in a Ventura Bag. The only thing that is harder to move is wood and chook food ..

My 5 meter Kayak would look pretty silly strapped across the back of a Triumph twin,,and firearms tend to attract the fuzz now days,,so I think I'll keep my 4x4 ute thanks.

I tend to stear clear of "bike only" types,,,they strike me as being a bit short in other departments as well:weird:

Plus I like telling people I've owned dozens of cars, bikes, trucks, boats, and I live a pretty full life.

Hope St Peters first words arn't "what have you done with your life ? " at lest for the dumb cunts that self impose their own stupid limits that is.

I'm safe because I can answer "more than you cunt" so open the gate before I kick it down.

Never driven a car and never will,,,what dumb cunt said that huh:laugh:

More like "Driven a car, Meh"

In reply to OP My car/umbrella is being used when I'm feeling under the weather or I'm being lazy. TBH I'm not selling my car because
1) It's back up if the bike doesn't start (God forbid!) for some reason at 7am when I'm trying to get to work
2) I don't think I would get much for my car and I'm not desperate for cash
3) Being single, and not having a full bike licence or spare gear it would be hard to take a girl on dates (no back seat privacy:no:)

I might sell the car eventually for a van or ute to carry a race bike of some type when I have the money.

Obviously lifestyle/marital status dictates your ownership of any particular vehicle.

Wife has a cage, she takes it to work six days a week.

My only choice is the motorbike or my collection of bicycles.

It's a pain at times, but forces me to lead a simpler life.

Bonus is the 14 year old cant keep asking me for rides to here there and everywhere.

have to have a company vehicle so I cant commute on the bike.....need the car to race around picking up stuff, taking clients out, getting the company brand out there. Its imposed....I tried "how about a company motorcycle".....apparantly the clients wouldnt like it:weird:

Even when married with 2 sprogs, she owned the car, I always had a bike, and as |Rastus points out, sure removes the issue of transporting teenagers about, and then pleading to borrow the car for the night.... 2 of the cars I owned were 'ex kids car' a Datsun 180B and a Bulldog (austin allegro) we sure did allow/buy ours WRX turbo's NOT!

You're 100% correctIi AM short in 'other departments' Car ownership! :bleh: I tend to avoid mixing with those who think owning dozens of cars, bikes, kayaks and firearms equates to having had a full life? :weird:

I'm a pretty die-hard motorcyclist. Been riding since I first bunked primary school and found the keys to my brothers C90 in his room. Lost the use of my left arm 15yrs ago in a bike crash, been back riding for 13yrs. Everything in my life is centred around two things, my kids and motorcycling. But even so I'll always try to have my own car. Sometimes the weather is just too shity to be bother riding, sometimes I need to pick things/people up or off, sometimes I just can't be arsed gearing up to go over to mates house 10km away.

Car is way too much use for moving stuff (kids, food, bike parts ect).
Also real handy for towing the track bike. Although the thought of rocking up to the track with the R6 on a trailer being towed behind the R1 is quite interesting..................... but about as practical as a pocket on a G-string.

Dude, you aint all in.

When I first decided to take the leap from 2 smoke MX bikes to a road bike

If you were all in you'd still have the dirtbike. If you still had the dirtbike, you'd need a van/ute/car&trailer for transport. Unless of course you live next to a track, in which case, you lucky bastard.

Nothing wrong with cars (i like the old ones) but I havn't had one for years, I realized that paying to insure it keep it woffed and regd etc to only be used once a month wasn't worth it. If I really need to I'll get the odd taxi or borrow a mates for moving stuff and pay them in beer. Still works out cheaper than paying for something you don't use or enjoy using. Obliviously this doesn't work for everyone and It is a pain going spearfishing and having to stash my gear in a bush when i'm in the water and keep my bike keys inside my wetsuit ;)

When you think about how many households in NZ rely on public transport and have no car of their own it makes you feel like a rich fullah having 2 vehicles.

Going without a car wouldn't be the end of the world, for many families no car is the norm.

we have 6 cars and 2 motorbikes

And how many people to drive/ride them? I remember living with the parents we had 9 cars between the 5 of us

I just had the 1, but my brother had a ute he never got around to "boy racer'ing" his every day driver and another ute that ended up getting sold for scrap cos he left it too long. A couple of vans just because, work vehicles and everyones own car. We paid enough ACC levies I think.

Last year at age 51 was the first time I had a car registered in my own name. Previously any cars we've had have been in Mrs Oakie's name with a couple in joint ownership. I have had 9 bikes in my name over the years. Pissed off actually because the dealer put the latest car in my name and I was quite happy to go through my life without being the sole registered owner of a car.

Must admit I'll probably take the car to work about 5 days a year on really wet and windy days and of course it comes in handy for groceries and going camping so I'm not exclusively 'biker'.

Car died a couple of years ago so that was my all in point. Tis a bit of a pain in the arse some times so I'm doing up an old old Land Rover to get the dirt bike to the dirt.
Biggest pain is when the bike is getting new tyres.

I have a van for grocery days and transporting bikes.
Idd be tempted to sell the van if I sold the bucket.
Im lucky to have a work kingcab ute with free gas and good bosses so the van is a luxury. The wife likes the fact we have it but the cost to maintain and run it is more than the extra we would spend on public transport as long as we did groceries in the work ute.

If anyone wanted a van and a bucket racer and was prepaired to swap a motard I wonder if my marriage would survive?

well im in the reverse situation.
about to buy a car today for dodgy weather days, though the worst/cold is probably behind us.
i need 4 wheels to go surfing in the afternoons/weekends.
plus im over washing bike then gettin dirty again next day cause of showers/rain.
and i now get to wear supa casual clothes to work and flip flops
also, get to go to gym with ease
and since i start work at 7am, fisnish at 3pm, i miss the bad traffic so not to bad for a car at those hrs.

You just need a top box!
I went to a conference last week in a full suit with spit shined shoes and the works. Just folded the blazer right and change out of your armour gear / boots in the carpark because: ATGATT. Everything still looked freshly dry cleaned.

Same goes for casual gear / gym gear etc etc, just get more creative with packing :done:
