Recently bought a 2007 XT660R. I find it does what it is supposed to do and fairly comfortable. Havent tried the dr650 but I did look at it, and felt that the XT660 was the better bike quality wise.

However, the Dr650 is lighter and I think lower as well.

XR650R ya wont be dissapointed - Designed by Honda to be pinned wide open at high speeds for the Baja race - 188 km/hr with the factory trail gearing - wack motard gearing and ya 200 plus - best engine builders in the world Honda !
Easy to maintain - run mine on diesel oil $6 bucks litre
Just did valve clearances for first time - got 11k on clock - quick and easy to adjust
Above why they hold their value for decent amount of time

Dr650 buts that's cos I got 1. Yes they are heavier than the likes of the xr650r but that's why the DR is lams approved and the XR isn't. Lots of aftermarket goodies to and they are reliable too. Can't comment on the xt660 but I hear they are heavier still.

If you really want a motard then a drz400sm would be the story - dunno about LAMs though

Transport NZ were just lazy fuckers and copied the Aussi's bikes you'll find most of the trail bike models are ADR strangled with throttle stops, tiny end caps on mufflers and tall gearing etc.
A well set up KTM 530 motard will easily put out 50 + hp and wheelie in 3/4 gear. A 525 with a 570 kit will hit close to 65 hp and scare the hell outta ya.

Amendments to the LAMS list will soon see all pre 2012-2013 KTM EXC's removed.

No. The latest can have the restrictors left in when PDI'd to ensure they're LAMs compliant. Previously, the restrictors were the first parts thrown in the rubbish as a new KTM was assembled. Therefore, all used EXCs have no restrictions.

The same should apply to Yamaha's WR450\250 as these are strangled as much as a KTM exc , remember my PE175z was strangled 2 took an hour to let perform as Suzuki intended, it came with 2 head gaskets, intake reducer between carb and reed block, tiny muffler hole, double walled pipe with a reducer in it.
