View Full Version : Most popular bike in NZ?

Hey guys, just wondering what the general concensus is around on this? From what I've seen in the 2 weeks I've been here, it's all Harley's or Ducati's? The odd difference here or there, that's about it though. In Ireland, it's all GSXR's and Ninjas really, not many cruisers really, but that could be the sh*t roads/ sh*t weather.

So, what's the most common bike around these parts then?

Oakie
3rd October 2012, 19:51
Well if there was a 'Toyota Corolla' of bikes here I would say GSXR.

sootie
3rd October 2012, 19:52
Interesting. I usually associate such predominances with how successful the various agents of each brand are in the local scene at promoting their particular brand. I think it often comes down to a handful of salesmen.
Pharmaceuticals seem to be a similar example of this.

Most popular or most common?

The VStrom and WeeStrom are common as muck where I work.

brianblaze

I'd be a big proponent of Suzuki alright, not seen many around, but in fairness I've only back and forth been between Waiwera and Auckland, that's about it!

I'd say there'll be a big uptake in bikes soon with the LAMS changes?

It's a conspiracy!

Oh, and did you guys have this over here?

Haven't seen one yet, and that was the bike I had before I came over? It's a Honda BROS/ Hawk in America? Or did it not come to the Southern hemisphere?

There are a couple of BROS around. They're a good LAMS bike

I think it depends on where you are/look.

At the AUT Carpark ,there are more 250 kawasakis* then anything else. (Aside from fucking scoots, but those dont count :2guns: )

* Covers all the zzr/zxr/gpx/ex250 variants.

GN250 = bulletproof! 20+ years and still sold/ manufactured!

Dunno about individual models, but I've heard more than once about there being more Harleys than anything in NZ. Something like "there's more Harleys per head of population than anywhere in the world".

GN250 = bulletproof! 20+ years and still sold/ manufactured!

Not in NZ anymore, you can't get a new GN250 in a dealership in NZ. Worst move Suzuki has ever made.

James Deuce
3rd October 2012, 20:30
Not any of the bikes mentioned. None of them are popular and I object to the people who own them even existing.

The only reason there's so many Suzukis on the road is because Suzuki sell them at Toy Warehouse prices in NZ, a year after each model has been released elsewhere in the world.

Coleman's are stocking 2012 models I think, so the site says anyway.

I'm still waiting til LAMS kicks in to see if I can get a decent 250 runabout on the cheap!

There are a fair few NT650/BROS' around, I had one, the chap that has mine now had three or four of them I think. Neat little bikes, shit suspension.
The GN is/was probably one of the best selling bikes here.
Currently it'd be the Ninja 250 or the GT250 Hyosung.
But, most nikes you see are of the cruiser type with a born-again-biker on top heading for a lowside in to something solid.

I would say I see far more cruisers, particularly HD's round here. All weathers too. Mind you, there are a lot of cafes here...

Distantly followed by BMW adventure/touring bikes, loaded to the gunnels.

The locals ride a mix of all sorts, exotica, sprot bikes, cruisers & vintage.

Well a while back it was probably the TF125 mud-bug farm bike:sunny:.

But in the public's perception it would be Harley; because they are the Rolls Royce of motorcycles(TM).

I'll leave you to fill in what parallels I'm drawing:innocent:.

NZ certainly has the highest per capita rate of Harleys in the world, so if popular is what's bought, it would be HD.

That aside, I've ridden with a large cross section of riders, and each group or type of riders has certain "goto" bikes. In long distance riding the ST1300 is very common, Adv riding has the stroms and GSs, cruisers are definitely HD (but that's more brand than model), learners have GNs... so on and so forth...

Looking at the stats fro nzta,

It shows Suzuki's just ahead of HD in new vehicle stats.

We did have these over here and they were marketed as BROS ( not hawk ). I suspect the name did nothing for sales as at about the same time a very camp boy band by the same name was rising up the charts in the UK. ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bros )

I think it more about exposure, all the cars get plenty of time to look at the harleys that are lodged in hedges, fences, ditches, letterboxes, etc. Bikes that stay on the road are, well, on the road; and everybody knows cagers don't bother looking in that direction much.

From what I've seen (at least in wellington and the wairarapa), is that the Suzuki bikes are the most popular amongst learners and commuters. For experienced riders and those that like to travel around allot (and can afford to ride one unlike myself) its the triumph.

Biggest selling bike over 651cc in NZ is the Triumph Speemaster, followed by the 883N Harley. Contray to one penis's opinion that Suzuki release models here a year after the rest of the world...we actually often get 'em well before anyone else. Depends on the model.

I'm pretty sure I am correct. When you add up the sales by all road models for 600cc and above Triumph are selling more than HD. Triumph sell a much wider range of bikes than HD. Sure HD sell more cruisers than Triumph (who sell quite a few) but triumph has bikes in the touring, sports touring, sports and adventure touring segments and combining all these sectors outsells HD.

That's odd. I just got emailed the figures the other day. The email I got showed HD as still the biggest selling bike in NZ over 651cc.

But of course...Harley-Davidson could be lying. To their credit...Triumph are running a very close second.
