FYI folks - I have no commercial association with these folks but am registered to do this event in January. it is immediately ahead of the BMW register annual rally and assumes a number of GS riders will take advantage of it

sounds like a cool ride. If its half as good as the WAR ride last year it will be awsome!

some vid to come when I get time, off fishing!

This was a great ride, split into 3 groups it was challenging for all. The gung-ho's I joined for approximately 10 minutes. Ahem. :sweatdrop

Not changing the rear stock tyre on the DR was a mistake, but hey - for the rest of the ride - what I lacked in tread depth I made up for with momentum. That mostly worked, except for a couple of hills and some deep sand where traction and momentum were not my friends. One always needs practice on picking up the bike on interesting angles no?

First though, I went via Napier and Waipuk - met up with Ross who showed me some cool back roads and Robyn (thanks for lunch - that was awesome!).

Keen to get back to the HB and ride here some more. Then over the Gentle Annie to Waiouru.

PS - My brother is in Waipuk and has offered his yard/place for biker accomm anytime

Day 1 - afternoon was a 'gentle' ride that saw us up (steep) hills, down (steep) dales and it was a bit of a dust bowl at times, but we were pushed through these challenging areas while the weather was good. The 4WD club were also in the area, later we visited their camp after the weather and a mini cyclone hit. Turned their outhouses upside down and inside out. Oh dear.

Day 2 - after a nice gravel ride out to where the Kaimanawa horses are corralled we stopped by this river crossing to watch another group have some fun.

Who do you recognise in these photos?

more awesome riding and scenery we stopped to fix a couple of flats. Not a bad view from everywhere!

Good to see lots of women getting stuck in with their bikes too. I found a catapult loitering in the lunch stop and with a mod from my wolfman I was armed and dangerous. But no danger to the bottle I was trying to hit :nya:

The lunch stop was a historic place, I heard a tale about a local that met his demise in this hut...

Then onto more cool tracks and roads to the dam

we did a cool off-road too but just some vid of that to come.

Day 3

As we were heading off we were lucky to be able to have a quick look through the Singaporean Army's compound. They have shipped their gear and people over for some heavy duty exercises. Then it was off to the desert via an airstrip.

the ride across the desert was cool. Very cool. There's a swift ford crossing straight up and one BMW who shall remain nameless gave the bike a jolly good clean here.

Awesome to ride to the fort and beyond to the Gates of Morder.

it took us longer than expected to get to the fort - Off Limits did a fab job of pushing us to, and beyond our limits, everyone got help they needed to get their bikes through.

Here are the girls all looking awesome and after we rode to the area they filmed the Gates of Mordor it was a good ride back through sand. Er, on the DR it was good that is!

You did a great job Off Limits - I loved it to bits. Thanks!

Also very cool to meet up with some adv mates, and meet some new ones!

Jeez, Those pics bring back memories of the 3 years I spent there with the green machine. I recognize most of those locations.
That "Fort" is one of a few mockups that the special forces use to practice in before going to where the real thing is and doing their job.
Just out of interest, The Team of US Navy Seals that took out Bin Laden did their practising in Waiouru at a mockup of the compound where he was hiding.

This was a great ride - hard work for me, but a great ride none the less. When you needed help, it was there. I'm relatively new to adventure riding, and the support and encouragement was second to none! Can't wait until the next one.

an excellent ride - superb organisation - sufficient challenge for this old fart of modest ability to be satisfying - God willing I plan on doing it again next year!

PS - take my hat off to those on the large oil head GS's even the F800's were a handful for some in the conditions

Great story and pictures Shewolf - It was a ride my mate Fin and Myself really enjoyed From blasting with the Gunho group on Day 1 then stepping back on Day 2 to enjoy great fast Gravel roads But my only trouble on this day was having a rock put a hole in my engine casing . Lucky for me that i was following the lead rider and was first corner man when i noticed the drip drip . I was carrying a tube of kneadit that ive had it my bag for a few years & with some great help I was back on the road in less than 20 minutes with limited oil loss . Day 3 i was offered the use of a Quid bike so i could save th XT for the ride back to Wgtn . This day was full of helping others who were struggling with the testing conditions - I had alot of great laughs this day + the bonus of riding another riders BMW 700GS fast across the Desert :niceone:

A Big thanks to all who organized the Event as its a Trip most would happly do over again .
