Considering the confirmed attendees it probably goes without saying, but I'll ask anyway.

What kind of pace are you guys planning on setting? Would it be appropriate for somebody whose maybe on the slower side of life?

*edit, reading isn't my strong point tonight. If there's room i'd be down to go. I'll be putting along ona 250 :Punk:

Could be a starter, the turbo hayabusa needs a blow out.

Katman
9th October 2012, 07:29
As Maha says, traffic is most likely to be very heavy that day.

If your intention is to break any records, stay at home.

If you intend to come along for the ride, leave your ego at home.

kiwifruit
9th October 2012, 08:00
What about giving the 400 a run?

I could be convinced. I do like the idea of doing it on a tiny bike, though.

The pace will be leisurely. You'll be fine on a 250, just ride your own ride. If you find yourself dropping back, don't worry about it! It's not a race.

I'm interested.

But given the history of this circuit, history of some kb groups rides, and the likely traffic loading it will be no place for dickheads or egotists. The aim of all these rides should be a great time for ALL and a safe return home for ALL. I'll watch posts in here with interest.

As long as the ride organiser is very clear on the day of what is expected from all those that join him, then it should not be a problem.
Good to see a number of 'Mentors' expressing interest.

In my experience, there are two types of 'ride organisers':

1. The ones who want to go for a ride.

2. The ones on anal-retentive power trips.

Guys,

I guess that you don't need reminding with your experience but from my perspective as a Coromandel resident, the worst driving trait on the Peninsula by a country mile is the cutting of blind corners by twats who don't know how to drive on country roads. I'm sure it's getting worse too . It's particularly noticeable on Friday and Sunday afternoons as people come on and off the Peninsula for the weekend. It'll be made worse at the end of Labour weekend with fuckwits towing boats now the fishing season has started in earnest. To end on weird but true note, the worst drivers towing boats are the pricks in 4x4's who wear baseball caps and have moustaches - have no idea why!!! We've got a 4x4 and a boat but not a moustache or baseball cap in sight

Just take care out there...

Cheers,

Geoff

Do the words posted here genuinely reflect peoples' attitudes to a group ride like this or is it just a whole lot of posturing and bullshit spraying?

I ask because if it's the latter why do you bother? If it's the former then enjoy the game of roulette and the risk you put everyone else at. Won't include me. (But then I doubt any of you will lose sleep over that.)

Seriously, I'm not sure exactly what people are perceiving here. Everything posted just now between me, Maha and Gordie is pure silliness, not directly related to any plans for this ride.

You know full well Dan that that very "pure silliness" is exactly the sort of shit that leads to "pure silliness" on the road.

I thought this thread was an attempt to show a different approach to the Coro loop.

It appears I was wrong.

Balu and I did the loop today. Great weather for it, nice stops at Coromandel, Whitianga and Tairua. A few bikes out and about, a couple of cars that we let pass as they'd developed a weird attraction to my backside, only one stop to let a herd of moo moos do their road crossing thing, and a quick chat with a couple of ladies who belong to Ulysses in Australia. Also was a good opportunity to get my derriere saddle ready for our big trip in January...

I would suggest having lots of patience, not taking unnecessary risks (lots of tightish corners and narrow margins for error - pretty unforgiving for long stretches), and definitely ride your own ride. You can't really get lost and chances are there will be a few smaller groups form within the larger overall group.

So you gonna sit at home cock stroking instead? Some people just like going for rides and not giving a shit about who's fastest etc.

As for me I'll be on babysitting duty, so unless someone on their 6F want to pillion a 8 year old girl...? She has a hot pink helmet and leather jacket

We all know its a dangerous weekend to ride, but at the end of the day we have just as much right to be on those roads as cars. So I reckon as long as we stay responsible and keep it safe we will be fine and have a great ride.

I'm looking forward to this.

Worst experiences on the Coro have come from HD riders ( wish it wasn't so guys), but hey both of em on my side for more than a hundy M's or so and quite aware of their road position, just didn't give a flying F..k.
PB is closest to it , be very aware of who and or what is around you and be prepared to go slowly until it's safe to pass, the roads are actually quite good, but other users make it very daunting at times.
Go on a weekday mid day and enjoy some good, solid, constant, mile eating pace or a weekend and be ready for stop start, stop, start.
An of course the other idiots out there.
Reckon if enough Mentors did go it'd probably be a good experience for those younger/less experienced types to see a good road ruined by fools and horses.

Are you really prepared to take responsibility for someone else's 8-year-old daughter on the back of your motorbike? Seriously? Come on, Dawn. With respect, you're a lovely person, and you've made some progress with your riding over the last few years, but I wouldn't put my daughter on a bike with you.

I can't imagine that the haydes55 has any idea what he's on about, so I'll say it now: dude, don't let anyone else pillion your daughter. The exceptions to that rule would be so narrow that I can't even think of a potential situation in which they'd apply to you. So just treat it as a rule, OK?

Edit: In fact, don't even pillion her yourself for the next few years. Get out on the track, learn to ride properly, have some bins of your own so you know how hard the road is and how much it hurts. You are currently at risk of binning. What a solid man in his 20s or 30s can soak up and shake off could literally kill a little girl. Not smart.

In fairness it's highly unlikely that he would take me up on the offer. As for the offer - it would stand. As you are well aware, I know what it's like to hit the road (literally) so have a good understanding of what that entails. The way you put it, no one should ever take anyone on the back of their bike until they're an old dyed-in-the-wool fogey who's been riding for half a century or more. Nah, I know you don't really mean it like that but you know where I'm coming from. But I am confident in my ability to take people - have done it more than just once or twice - and I would never take offence at someone declining an offer of a back seat with me. I am fully aware what a privilege it is to pillion someone else's child/daughter and consider it the utmost in responsibility to look after them.
So. Point taken. I can say quite happily though that while I appreciate your concern for my potential passengers I'll make my own choices and decisions regarding that. Thanks anyway!

PB has pillioned my daughter, OK she's 20 now, wasn't then though. I know how PB rides, as I've ridden with her over the years and know that she is a good solid rider who keeps her head and doesn't do stupid shit.
That said I'd have to say that JR is right when talking to young guys with young kids, you lot need to have some good solid experience under your belts before you take your kids or even your families kids riding anywhere. I reckon it should be a rule too.

I used to take my nieces and nephews through their back yard orchard on me ol XS4hundy special, but never on the road.

Pillioned myself with my mate on his bike for years so knew how terrifying it could be for the rear ender.

My wifey and I pillioned on my bike for years, then I got older and wiser and bought her one, she will still happily hop on the back with me, but give her a choice and she will ride her OWN bike these days.

Bloody nora....someone puts up a Coro loop ride....albeit on a public holiday which ups the risk factor due to brainless twerps in 4WDs...and, huzza, it becomes a pissing contest before anyone sets wheel to tarmac! Mr Kiwi and Mr Fish.err..Random, are not balls out, "not doing 250k you're a woos" yee haa, fuck you, types. It is perfectly possible to do a Coro loop in a civilised relaxed style, regardless of 4WDs...it just depends on your mindset! Mr KF and JR are to be trusted for a relaxed pootle as observed by myself and others.

(OK - the 3 KB coro loops I've done that resulted in 4 write offs, ......that's a different story. No one was hurt and KB and JR were in no way involved.......much)

jrandom
13th October 2012, 05:14
KB group rides on the Coro loop are kinda like sleeping with an ex.

It used to be fun, but then bad things happened and it all fell apart. But then sometimes you remember the good times and think, why not?

And, of course, it still carries a high risk of ending in tears before you even get your pants off.

Group Rides
all together one at a time

kevie
13th October 2012, 06:57
On any "group ride" riders are surely free to ride at their own pace, are they not?

Most rides I have been on, the general rule was ...... no-one passes the leader and the tail end charlie (TEC) passes no-one .... The leader then sets the pace for the fastest speed allowable, Tail end Charlie ensures all bikes are accounted for and no-one gets left behind, and with regular re-group stops it all works and the slow riders and newbies don't end up left in the dust and frustrated at the concept of group rides and we lose them from joining clubs and joining us for a fun day.
I like this policy in LOR rides, and the fact whoever is the 'second place' bike, always stops at an intersection to point the way to go till the TEC arrives then rejoins the ride. Works so well.

I have quit 3 groups over the years as I like to cruise around 100-110 and they have taken off and as I didn't know the route ended up just toodling home on my own ...... one ride I went on the group decided to change plans and instead of going to the prearranged pub they toodled off another place and a couple of us that were left behind turned up at the arranged pub and no-one was there .... this creates frustration and dishartenment for the rider(s)

A couple of the groups the tailender passed me too and gapped it like the rest (no intention to name the said groups tho)

But if you organizing a group ride and aware there's a few newbies or slow riders present .... keep them in mind when you are setting the pace. or if the ride is intended to be at a faster pace then stipulate that its not suitable for slower riders when you post the advert.

Most rides I have been on, the general rule was ...... no-one passes the leader and the tail end charlie (TEC) passes no-one .... The leader then sets the pace for the fastest speed allowable, Tail end Charlie ensures all bikes are accounted for and no-one gets left behind,
.

I cant even begin to imagine why anyone would want to go for a ride like that:blink:

In all honesty, that is the best way to ride it.

Some may advocate the ''ride your own ride'' which is all nice and shit, so, why not do just that...safer/easier and more enjoyable.

Normally us nor'verners meet at the Drury autobahn but the PUKEKOHE one works for me. If I hear from anyone else wanting to ride together to Kopu I'll be at the Puke one by 9am.

Weather is crap crap crappy in Auckland atm with rain pissisting down at erratic intervals. The forecast for Monday is supposed to be sunny with a bit of cloud, then back to rain Tues and Wed. Fingers crossed for a sunny window of opportunity on Monday! If it's raining around 7 - 8 am tomorrow morning I will definitely be revising my decision; however, as long as it starts out acceptably I'll still be keen. If the weather packs a major sad once the ride is underway it will be a case of determining at which point along the way to call it quits...

Pissing down and blowing a gale at present. There might be mud on the eastern side of the Coro Hill so take care. They're tiering an old slip right by the side of the road and there was a fair bit of clay when I came through on the 4x4 on Thursday.

Yep... very true. Just came back this avo did the loop with Ms at slow pace yesterday and today. Coming back lots of wind gust and wet. Half the carriage on Coro hill was covered in a thin layer of clay sliding downhill... took those corners VERY slow. Cagers behind me didn't like it but fuck them I'm not gonna risk me, Ms and bike to do an extra 10 km hr.

So yea ride safe, might be better tomorrow.

Was a great day for it. Nice to meet you guys! Not a lot of traffic, and the coast road was lovely. From Waitakaruru all the way back to the expressway would have been painful in a car, but with a few bunny hops past slooooow cars and queues it wasn't too bad.
Weather held out really well with only a few showers on the homeward stretch and I've found that Corogate is a nice place to stop for food. The woman there couldn't do enough for me, asking if I'd like to move my bike out of the rain so it didn't get wet (I declined) or if I'd like a hottie for my hands (they have a supply of them in the cafe especially for bikers; again, I declined). But it's nice to find places where we haven't stopped before, rather than habitually stopping at the same watering holes all the time!

hmmm i wasn't going to go but doing the loop was too much of an attraction to miss. Not sure if I saw anyone.. group of 4 with a tourer or 2 heading down the final hill into corotown, then 3 sports bikes a lot further on probably around 12:30/1pmish. then a scattering of 1 or 2 bikes here and there. I went thames, corotown then over the hill .. etc.

Awesome run .. only 1 slippery patch of clay on the waterfront gave me a wobble.

The wind was shocking heading back to htown that gave me the wobbles a few times.

Where did you all stop for lunch ?
