The Red Knights Burns Support Motorbike Run is being held again on the 25th September 2005.
The start point is the Old Manukau Fire Station, which is on the corner of Kerrs Rd and Great South Rd's, Manukau.
(It's now the current St John Ambulance Station).
Start time is 1100hrs, leaving the station for Middlemore at 1200hrs.
We will proceed along Great South Road, through Manukau-Papatoetoe-left at the monument at Otahuhu and to the same venue as last year.
Middlemore Hospital.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This fundraiser is to support the young children that have been burnt and spend time in Middlemore hospital.
Badges in the past have been $10 to buy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have put it up on the calender events section.
But can a moderator please copy it for me and then put it up on the home page for me please.
Thanks.

Riff Raff - I have copy and pasted what you said about who the organisers are. I hope you don't mind me doing that.

It'll be a good day when we have enough money for health and education, and the air force has to run a sausage sizzle when they want more bombs...
or something like that....

MDU - The proceeds go towards equipment and toys for the children.
The organisers have in the vehicles the toys and equipment.
So that the money doesn't get lost. It goes directly to the children in the ward.
The organisers ask the wards etc them as to what do they need.... and get it for them.
I have been on the only two fundraisers runs that this lot have done so far.
I have seen all the toys and equipment, and it gets handed over to them on the day.
This run will be their 3rd annual fundraiser run.

How many attended last year?
Quite a few attended last year. I think there was over 100 bikes that turned up.
As its a new fundraiser, I guess it takes time to get it out there for people to know about it.

Thanks for putting this up Crashe - I was getting round to it.
For those that are interested in knowing, the Red Knights is a club for emergency services with members from ambulance, fire, police and rescue helicopter. The Red Knights is an international club with the governing body in the USA. New Zealand has two chapters - Northland and Auckland. Our charity of choice is the Kidsfirst Burns Unit at Middlemore. If anyone wants to purchase toys to donate to the unit please note that they should be plastic - not teddy bears etc as they cause infections with the burns.
Hope to see heaps of you there supporting this very worthy cause.

We had 103 bikes attend last year. It would be great if we could have more this year.

Here's a couple of pics from last year's run. We're hoping that this year we'll have a few police bikes there and intersections blocked off. We have a fire engine and ambulance bikes there too.

No.
I have nothing against the cause , and good on them for doing it, however I have nothing to do with the RKs group, nor do I wish to be associated in anything that they are involved with.

There's nothing wrong with the Red Knights. It's actually an American organisation, predominantly made up of firefighters over there. Over here members are from all emergency services and money is raised for the burns unit at MIddlemore as well as setting up a burns support unit in Northland. The Northland chapter was set up about 4 years ago, and the Auckland chapter 1 1/2 years ago. Speedmedic and myself were founding members of the Auckland chapter, and I am still treasurer for the club. Whilst F/F, SM and myself have no problems with the whole concept of the club, the organised rides for members don't really fit into our riding style :devil2:
At this stage I'm not going to be able to make the burns run - am working on that day and haven't been able to organise a shift change, as well as still not having my bike back. But I would be grateful to all the KBers who turn up to support this great cause.

ahh. Not interested in being a member, nor going on their normal organised rides.
Back protector will probably arrive Saturday, so what better way to use it first for making up the numbers on a charity ride. :doobey:

Having burnt my hand and spent 3 days at Middlemore in the Plastics Ward I am fully supportive of this charity ride. Luckily I have no scars but I don't have the same flexibility in my left hand as I do in my right. It was touch and go whether I was going to need surgery or not but thankfully the pendulum swung in the positive direction. Thank goodness for Rhino and his quick action in getting me into the bathroom and my hand under the cold tap!!! Also I volunteer for Radio Lollipop at Starship Hospital so anything to help sick kids out gets my support too.

I did the Burns run last year, and am keen to go again, I am glad that the ride is a bit longer this time, hopefully the lead group gets its navigation sorted out.
If someone comes up with a meeting place out west will be happy to out in a group.

We were talking about going the wrong way on all the burns runs from now on, bit of a ritual sort of thing. There's nothing funnier than watching over 100 bikes trying to turn round in a little street!!!

Yep, is was like WTF.... doesnt the leader (in the fire engine) know where we are all going...lol. Nothing like sheep following sheep...
Did the u-turn and continued along the road to turn left... but a whole pile of riders got stuck at the traffic lights cos no one, did the 'stop the traffic on the corner thing'... mind you they were all trying to get in and out of the same little street.
But we all got there in the end....I hope.
Oh well, it made it all the more exciting.... and its all for a good cause.

WOW what a turn out of bikes today...
Riff Raff turned up to chat.
Hey Riff Raff any idea how many bikes there were today?
I reckon about 12 KBers were there too.
Some videos and pics were taken...
I do believe the police enjoyed there sprints down the roads at high speed to stop the traffic for us...
The old leading Fire Engine stopped on the way - possible minor breakdown - but they got it going again... and they too hooned it down the road passing us all with sirens going, to get back in the front.
Outlawtorn, Scorpygirl, Rhino, Nak1d, Madguaitarist (sp), MikeL, Burnzup, Goddess of Goof (think thats how its spelt), Damon and myself. There were a couple of others but can't remember their names.
Got a tad lost finding my way back to the motorway... asked a truckie which way. Then it started to drizzle, stopped off at Kyber Pass to put on my lightweight wet weather pants...
A great day and I do hope that they made heaps for the kids in the burns unit at Middlemore Hospital.

Didn't get a chance to do a count, sorry. Just before the ride started I had organised with my watch manager for us to be tail end charlie in the ambulance, but then it went nuts out there and we got a job. Got our patient to Middlemore at the same time as all the bikes were coming through and it did look really spactacular. I hope everyone enjoyed the ride. any wrong turns taken this year???

Nope no wrong turns this year....

Yes, a great turnout. Rhino and I were talking to one of the Red Knight guys and he said that there were about 120 bikes. Though I don't think that anyone did an official count. They gave a cheque for $500 and then there was a lady roving round with a bucket for gold coins donations. It was great to see some of the kids there too from Kidzfirst. They were beaming looking at the bikes. The guy on the pushy actual took the short way to Middlemore and then rode round Middlemore about 3 times to try and find we were parking our bikes. Excellent everyone. A must do next year on my own bike Crashe!! :banana:
