Between far to many other interests/passions, I'm a photographer and was part time freelancing for some years before becoming a desk jockey. I've been running my motoring blog based (http://www.beeoneoneoh.com) around my Datsun 1200 and drifting for 4 years now but slowly it's been moving into motorcycles over the last two years as I become more and more obsessed. I prefer to race but I take my camera everywhere I go. I'll post some photos where I can from the events I attend.
Note all these images are all hosted on my own server, not on kiwibiker.
Feel free to use the images for personal use but I retain all copyrights. I ask nothing in return except a link back to my blog www.beeoneoneoh.com if you do post them around. Thanks!
In anticipation of this months racing on Sunday - I'm frothing to ride again  - here are some photos from the April 2012 Mt Wellington meet. One or two of these my dad Simon took (old motorsport photog from back in the day).

I believe that is Dave Manual (RS50 frame with 2t engine), Max Olson (zxr frame? FXR engine) followed by Dean Miller on the Derbi?
And thats not the club bike thats the road bucket so thank Henk and Dutchee (Michelle), they will prolly be stoked it was enough motivation for you to get your own.

Super good day today! I thought I'd start with a few from the mixed group race which Mel and Brian won I believe. It ended up being quite a few so I put together a quick HTML page.
Click here for photos of the mixed group race (http://christophercain.cc/b/d/mtwellnov12r/mtwellpr1/index.html)
I also took a tonne of video of the A-grade races which when I have access to a computer that can process the files (big bastard 7D files are too much for my old shitter) I'll put them up too

I noticed the last meeting I attended that my FXR was hard to start, liked the choke and wasn't behaving great. I had it on Rob's dyno a while back with some interesting results only to find after the session that the carb was put together with the wrong sized slider. This meant a fairly breezy fit in the housing and I can only guess what it was doing to the mix.
Before that last Mt Wellington meeting (which I posted photos of previously) I changed it all to how it should be but wasn't 100% satisfied on the jetting. I thought it must be far to lean in the pilot jet (k35 at that time) as it would pop and not start with the choke out and start but not idle right with it in. After work this week I moved up to the medium sized (of the 3 pilots I have) jet which was unmarked and noticed a slight increase in how it ran but I couldn't get it right with the air mix screw. I again moved up to the largest pilot I have which is also unmarked and now have it idling fairly nicely after setting the air mix screw, chuffed :niceone:.
I am very disappointed that I missed the Tokoroa and Taumaunui rounds - I was looking forward to Tokora for so so long - due to being overseas but am now the new owner of a van for the remainder of the series. Fingers crossed all goes well and I can get as much seat time in as I can without any issues.
Inspired by the Team ESE thread (which I seem to spend far to much time on!) I purchased a cheap GP125 in December off trademe:

^thats the old man having a hoon up the driveway
It's a bit rough on the outside but starts and runs like a champ!! :wings: Over the holidays I taught a friend of mine to ride a motorcycle on it in my driveway, man he was frothing. Today I pulled off all the unnecessary parts from the bike and deleted as much as I cared to. It seems to have developed a leak from the casing so will have to have it apart sooner than I hoped. Last year I saw the ESE thread more than my girlfriend, spent my time commuting from work reading Graham Bell's 2 stroke tuning book and have since started on Gordon Jennings. I'm addicted to learning more about tuning 2 strokes and will use the GP125 and the ESE's documented experience as a guide towards progressing to one day racing the 2 stroke in another frame.
Also, I've posted some more photos of the Barry Sheene racing on my motorsport blog beeoneoneoh, click here for the link (http://beeoneoneoh.com/). Pass the word around and I'll try to get a few more up soonish, mainly the sidecars. Don't forget to keep scrolling down...

I pulled the GP down and studied the frame. This morning I bought some steel for some clip ons and will get the engine out sometime soon to have a go. We went to Hampton for the NZFMR, and it was killer. I'll be posing some photos on my blog in the coming week from it if anyone here is interested. I still need to make some hooks for my van so I can tie down the bikes in it but should be at Mt welly next weekend, yussss.

This is how we fitted rear set foot rest brackets. hopefully you can see them. PM me if you would like better pictures.
We found bracing the swing arm worked but bracing the frame did not. The bikes with the most frame bracing handled the worst. Front end chatter was a big problem with them.
We fitted 2.5 and 3.5 rims, rolled about 3/8" of new thread onto the original spokes, then cut them back when the wheel was laced up, that worked out ok. The thin rear axel from the GP100 bent when pushed hard, the 125 one seemed OK.
We had gas shocks on them that had to much gas pressure, so the compression was to high and rebound to low. Didn't find that out until it was too late. Emulators in the front forks, GT185 front end worked better than the GP125 one.
We have kept our old GP frames as Chambers reckons that with a bit of suspension development they could be made to work better than we had them.
Best of all these may be eligible for Post Classic tiddlers to be run with the CMRR soon. They would need to be dressed up to look like period racers. But you know 26-28hp is easily possible so they would be pretty competitive.
If you put the engine in a new frame for F4, it might be worth keeping the original rolling chassis for later. Maybe strip it down and put it up in the roof or under the bench some place.

I got most of the way through the clip ons today but realised the factory bars couldn't be chopped to fit the new brackets as they're too short. Will try get some steel this week to finish them off

Thanks Henk, thanks Rob! I shall keep that in mind. The GP125 for now is an as low as possible cost machine for some build fun and to learn more about 2 strokes and setting up a bike. Hopefully one of my friends can ride it whilst I'm racing the FXR for now.
I'm very curious to hear the more you braced the frame the worse the bike chattered in the front end.
TBH it seems that the more they were braced the worse they were, mine would chatter very violently front and back, it was so bad it would throw my feet of the pegs and hurt my back.
The one that was ridden the fastest was basically std, except for foot rest position, both had proper rims and slicks, never figured that out.
My guess is that resonable rear shocks and fresh oil in overhalled front forks would be a good start.
They are good till they let go, and if you have improved the point where they let go they let go more violently.
I think a basically std frame and attention to the suspension would give you a resonable ride.
The handling on the Scitsu was a little problematic at first with the front end tending to chatter through fast turns, this was resolved by altering the angle on the rear suspension.
This conversion at the beginning of the 'Race Chassis' thread came to mind when I read the above about chatter.
Also I've been staring at the frame for some time today and am keen to try out a swap to a single rear shock, brace the swing arm, brace the frame around the top of the engine similar to how you had yours, change to GT185 front end and some better tires and see how it goes. It will be a fun project that I no doubt will learn a lot from.

I made some clip on bars this week after work for the GP125. I've very stoked to have them at a more suitable height! Now I just have to cut off the front and rear pegs and make some new ones to correct the seating position.
The bars are currently at quite a shallow angle due to the bulk of the factory tank. I'm not about to chop and weld it :ar15: but man I wish I could! I'm toying with the idea of making one from scratch in the search for less mass and better fit. What does one coat the inside of a mild steel tank anyway?
Here's two reference images including the bars

Yeah I'll do that. It may even be better given we're hanging off the bike non stop on kart tracks
I can't help but be inspired by 50cc and 125cc racers of the yester year though such as these Piovaticci racers (http://www.wideopenmoto.blogspot.co.nz/2012/02/piovaticci-grand-prix-racers.html?zx=f2257e7ce8ab2be8#.UQEDEB03u8A). I love that the 125 has such deep cutouts for the knees and elbows. Whilst I realise they don't suit our tracks necessarily, that is a damn nice looking bike!

The front on the GPs is really vague. Most improvement is to drop the forks through the clamps so there is less exposed flexi forks. This will help turn in.
Of course the first thing you will notice is that they don't have top clamps. This is tragic but can be fixed with an old set of lower clamps cut & welded to the original & the hole opened up.
Next you'll need to do something about the footpegs.
these days I really wouldn't bother & would try find a cheap RG250 chassis.

Thanks Dave. I've been thinking a lot about this old frame and chatted to Rob on Sunday about their attempts with it. I'm going to go in and have a gander at what they've done soon.
I completely agree with just swapping to a new frame and tried my hardest to secure that NF4 frame that was for sale recently but missed by a few minutes I believe. As I intend to learn as much as I can about frame design and 2 strokes, it may not be the worst idea to press on with this frame and learn along the way. At least it will be light, much lighter than my FXR which pains my subconscious every time I go to push it (damn steel frame heavy bastard).
I will have further queries regarding the frame at a later date.

I spent my Saturday and Sunday at Mt Wellington for the practice and fun race day. Having not raced since November, I was eager to get as much track time as I could handle which consequently ended in my body now being wrecked! :violin:
It was a really good weekend of bikes with clear skies and a breeze to keep us slightly cooled. I let a few of my mates have a go on my FXR which should hopefully kick them into gear and mean they'll soon be out there. During the Saturday practice I made the most of my opportunities to follow Brian and others where I could in the hopes their riding ability may rub off on myself. Brian gave me a few pointers on braking which helped a huge amount! and lead to setting a new PB of 32.61s anticlockwise. On Sunday I improved on this with a 32.20s anticlockwise and I'm eager to keep the ball rolling into the 31s bracket! Thanks guys, I appreciate the hell out of any guidance I can get. :apumpin:
Races run:
5 lap sprint anticlockwise with no grid order - first on the grid gets pole - then straight after returning to the pits, back out for a 5 lap clockwise sprint
10 lap race around 'the ring' (midfield coned off) anticlockwise then straight after, clockwise 10 laps. Again no grid placing.
Borrowed bike race - anyone can enter as long as it's not your bike - 10 laps clockwise then 10 laps anticlockwise around the ring.
I swapped bikes with Rick's son Will who rides a CBR150 with cams, exhaust, carb, which was really fun! It had much much better throttle response than my FXR (with more work done to it) although I need to work on the jetting of my bike still. It hasn't been on the dyno before but I'd love to over lap the curves between bikes for a comparison.
Thanks to all that helped out and organised the day, great fun!

I bought some RS125 wheels from Billy which I might put on the GP frame in the future but I have no real plan. They were a good price and they don't come up often so why not eh. They came with an aluminum disk and a Talon (copy) sprocket carrier. I'm crazy busy with full time work and study at the moment so not much progress in anything as of late... except I put FCR41s on the SR20DE which is in my Datsun 1200. That's pretty fun.

Ahh, words of flattery:clap:
The answer is I got enough made to sate the demand of people who responded & put some money down, it was a bit of hassle to arrange but I wanted to help the crew out & needed some spares myself. We could get some more made by Grumph, but it probably needs to be 1/2 doz sets to make it worth buying a length of material.

I had some great fun on Sunday and improved on my times quite a bit which was great! I also tried my best to learn some riding skill from Avalon, Gavin, Nigel and David who lead from the front. Unfortunately the GP RS wasn't running 100% for Avalon but I'm kind of grateful for it because it let me try and follow when she overtook me :brick:

Huge respect for Karl who put in a 30.9 second lap on a 13hp FXR with standard wheels and 5 year old worn out skinny slicks. I have some serious learning to do with corner speed clearly! It also goes to show how little you have to put into your bike to be competitive at Mt Wellington if you have the right skill.
Thanks Kamil, Cully, Tim etc who ran the event and to the flag marshals as always :headbang:

I forgot to mention, I weighed my FXR at 107 kg whilst Will Ford's CBR came in a 106.5 kg (including light weight wooden seat), an almost stock FXR with most of the road gear at 127kg and Nick Olson's FXR engined FZR at 99 kg. Quite far off the 70 odd kg of RS chassis that's flying around (jealous face)

Super solid weekend, cheers again to everyone who helped out, organised and drank beers with us.
Reagan put in a ridiculous 42.955s lap, brian broke two bikes after qualifying third and pushed the FXR over the line, I got smoked by B grade half due to a ill tuned bike (other half cos I suck), Warrick fended his son Josh off until he conceded (that would have been an amusing drive home), I believe Mel got her knee down, Will stepped up the pace in B grade, the track was bone dry and fun as hell...
... aaannnddd my old man took some photos of us. Cheers dad. A successful first away meeting for myself and I can't wait for the next one.

Wow, what an awesome weekend! That was my first time visiting Tokoroa and that is a fun circuit, although hard on the body into those down hill sections. Huge thanks to the organisers, time keepers, flaggies, and everyone who drank beers with us on Saturday night. Congrats to everyone who raced and those who triumphed. The GP looked fierce, I was nervous before qualifying and I wasn't even in the race!
I just wanted to point out that there were TEN, yes TEN RS chassis' at the GP (including a RS250) and not including the GPR diesel which is pretty much a RS. That's more than a nationals round I believe... F4,
Cheers to Glen for showing me a few improving lines during the track walk and to Cully for letting me pervertedly handle his RSGP125. On that note:

That should be some good video! Glad to see there are people enjoying it all. Before going to Te Puke, Roy's Hill and Tokoroa I had no clue as to the layout, direction, elevation, tightness, scale of the tracks so it satisfies me that there is now at least SOME content online for others to view. They're such awesome tracks and not getting to see/race on them would suck.

Take some guidance from Team ESE and Tim (maybe Kel if he doesn't mind me chewing his ear off) and aim for a chubby power curve. I'd be more than happy with 20hp and loads of torque, I want to learn to ride and not rely on the power to cover up my lack of skill.
Last week I bought all new fasteners for it as the current stuff was worn and in crappy condition.
I also received a pair of mid 2010 Dunlop slicks with loads of tread left and they felt soft so that'll do for now. They may replace the crap 2006 Dunlops I have on the FXR and have Bridgestones fitted to the RS but I'm undecided as of yet.
A TS gearbox was also purchased and is on it's way to replace the junk GP gearing. I'm going to piggy back Tim's efforts in that department (thanks mate!).
A few RS parts are on their way from Japan for the GP125 engine as we speak
Please, if you could recommend somewhere to get the following parts or if you have something you don't mind selling to me, message me.
Things I need to buy/build for it still:
Crash protection
Fuel tank front rubber
Fuel tank cap
Fuel tank petcock
Front brake disk
Front brake pads
Handle bars
Front brake lever and master cylinder/reservoir assembly
Front and rear brake lines
Clutch lever and mounts
Rear brake master cylinder
Foot pegs and mounts
Rear sprocket
Tail piece

Why the TS gearbox? AFAIK it won't fit the GP case without a LOT of machining.

Why the TS gearbox? AFAIK it won't fit the GP case without a LOT of machining.
The TS 5 speed fits with a modest amount of modification, mostly the spline on the input shaft needs shortening and two of the original GP selectors need to be built up on their outside faces to fit the TS dogs.
The TS 6 speed is something else .....:pinch:

The RS, talk about being in the right place at the right time
Crash protection - Mulfords in Penrose. Buy the required length of Acetal rather than trying to get scraps out of their scrap bin.
Front brake disk - Contact Bert for good pricing on full floating stainless 296mm disc
Handle bars - I have a couple of sets including clamps that I can't use, going cheap!
Foot pegs and mounts - Pablo on ebay.co.uk. Great to deal with and very fair prices. I'll dig out his regular contact details.
Rear sprocket - Contact Bert again. You'll need a 52 tooth
Tail piece - reinstall the standard FXR seat and steal the RS seat for this bike
Very nice work on the photos and video, that must be some fancy kit you're using.

Thanks for the info Kel, you're just the gift that keeps on giving! I was going to contact Bert in relation to a brake master cylinder but it looks like he's the man to talk to about a few other things too. I will be in contact soon about a few bits and pieces.
You read my mind on the tail piece, it's currently sitting on the bike :headbang: I used to build surfboards for a living before becoming a desk jockey so I may think about making a mold for it... I don't want to smash it and have to spend another $200+ for one.

I spent some time at Tim's (cotsworld) place on Anzac day talking crap about bikes and figuring out how we can get some economies of scale going on with our GP125 builds. Being the good bastard he is, he gave me some... ummmm... used GP125 cases and a test bed GP100 cylinder for some time on the grinder before jumping into mine. THANKS TIM!

Man I love the efficient Japanese postal system. EMS to my door took under 4 days from the time I paid my supplier via paypal! One of these is for TZ Rob because hell if I'm bringing in one, I may as well bring in another as they don't come up on trademe very often do they.
I'm looking forward to finishing this exam so I can really start working on the engine. It has been just over 3 weeks since riding at Tokoroa and I'm starting to get the shakes, complete withdrawal symptoms. Fingers crossed this weekend is dry

Another great weekend at Mt Wellington this weekend. I was really enjoying myself and got some great starts which I was pretty chuffed on. In the second points race I was following Henk around as he tried and succeeded to past Dave Diprose in the mid field. Feeling very confident in myself I started to line him up too but I ran out of talent and ate shit into turn one when I grabbed too much brake. Thankfully my dad was shooting on that corner and managed a few frames of me skipping along the concrete. I got away with a solid bit of rash on my hip which swelled up pretty impressively and a sprained thumb but otherwise pretty good... bike still goes :niceone:
Time to update the 13 and 7 year old tires, get a smaller rear sprocket and some more practice I think. Never the less I still managed a 31.03s PB lap in that last race which is my best time to date on Mt Wellington. SO close to that 30s bracket!

Blasted the 'dummy' casings today, that I got from Tim. Came out quite nicely actually.
http://christophercain.cc/b/d/bikes/rs/IMG_2442.jpg
Picked up some devcon, a chunky carbide burr for the casings and a long shank ball end carbine burr for the cylinder. Devcon looks to have changed their packaging as I saw it in a few engineering shops with the same new packaging and the same product code as what I got from Rob.
http://christophercain.cc/b/d/bikes/rs/IMG_2446.jpg
I pulled the studs which surprisingly came out easily and scribed out the metal I need to remove from the casings. Tim made a template off one of the ESE casings which I borrowed. Looking back through old posts, the front clutch side (bottom left in the photo) looks to be far bigger than older engine photos. Is this a newer development Rob? Brendan on FXR150.co.nz hasn't cut deep into this area at all and I'm wondering if I should given my goal with this engine.
http://christophercain.cc/b/d/bikes/rs/IMG_2449.jpg
In went the Devcon to set overnight. I glued another bit on the ignition side that probably wasn't needed but oh well.

Your casings are looking good. The template Tim got was one of Cullys and is a bit bigger than my first effort, I have used Cullys template on the new cylinder I am working on.
282937
But I think we will have to be careful about how wide/deep we cut the cases.

The entry's to the rear transfer ports might need to be a bit compromised so as to avoid breaking through the cases.

...the new cylinder I am working on.
282937
Dang, so many ESE GP125 cylinder variations! I have that template that Tim made and I also nicked an ESE cylinder from him too which 'you went to far on the exhaust' on. The secondary transfers are really different in shape. The 'too far' cylinder is quite wide and buckety whilst the template is quite long like the one you are working on.
I'm keeping the below image in mind with the port angles. I am going to make some devcon dividers between the A and B transfer ducts but have them point to the rear of the cylinder like below.
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=281514&d=1366200788
I bought some cheap vernier calipers to sacrifice and I took a port rubbing of the 'too far' cylinder ports to compare to a rubbing of the stock ports. That exhaust really is massive! I'm surprised it didn't feast on rings too with quite flat top and bottoms.
Those carbine burrs were well worth the investment. Very smooth to use and it didn't take me long to remove most of the required material from the casings. I haven't gotten close to finishing them yet as I wanted to give the Devcon a long time to cure in the tops. After the casing photo below I took some more material out from the clutch side B transfer area.
I remember talking to you about inlet size and my goal of lower power with really good spread and you said to keep it smaller rather than go huge like suggested for the 30hp engines. I haven't taken much material from the inlet because of this but I might remove that corner that's still there.

I'm keeping the below image in mind with the port angles. I am going to make some devcon dividers between the A and B transfer ducts but have them point to the rear of the cylinder like below.
Type 2 to both sides! The front edge (exhaust side) of the B port should exit square across the cylinder rather than angled to the rear. Try to make the near side duct wall as square and straight as possible. Have a good look at the RSA cylinder drawings, while you wont be able to match them they give a lot of info as to what shapes and areas work.

Some pointers to myself
RSA125 cylinders
283005283003283004
Inlet timing
Wobbly said it all. Closing the disc later than 88° aTDC costs top end power; closing it earlier would give more bottom and mid power, but with a 39 mm carb the engine would run out of breath too soon. Aprilia used 42 or 43 mm carbs (most riders preferred the 42) and a closure timing of about 85° aTDC.
Duct entry ratios
If you look at the old Rotax pic it has a duct entry to port ratio of about 1.4.
The base gasket dimensions are virtually identical to the late model cases.
The RSA/RSW has a ratio close to 1.2, so its still tapered down to the port exit but no where near as much.
If you look at the Delivery Ratio of a full on 2T engine, virtually all the volume that ends up in the cylinder, is actually sitting in the transfer ducts, NOT the case.
The smaller this volume is, the quicker it can be accelerated thru the duct into the cylinder.
Wobbly's thoughts towards sharp transfer dividers...
Sharpen the transfer septums and I will personally bend you over and do horrid things with your arse.
Sharp leading edges are used on supersonic aircraft, when your transfer flow goes supersonic then so will the bike.
Look at the fastest two stroke in the worlds septum, does that look sharp???
283006
Frits on transfer ducts
The outer transfer duct radius is utterly unimportant; there the charge has no option but to go where the duct wall leads it. But the inner duct radius is very important: it should be as large as possible to avoid flow detachment. If you manage to keep the flow clinging to the inner surface (the Coanda effect), there will be less pressure-absorbing turbulence, so the flow will meet less resistance, transport more mass and deliver it where you want it to go.
The golden rule of flow: look for sharp inner edges and remove them. It always works.
The radii at the bottom bore edges, as visible in the picture above, yielded 1 HP; that's about 2% of the total power. The egdes where the transfer port windows cut the bore, should not be radiused; you do not want to promote inflow of waste gas into the transfer ducts. Here only the top and bottom edges should be chamfered lightly to make life easier for the piston ring.
There should be no widening just before the port exit; the duct cross-section area should gradually move from entry area to exit area. And with the inner curvature of the duct fixed, this more or less lays down the shape of the outer curvature.
Assuming that the flow in a duct will accelerate faster as a result of narrowing that duct is an ineradicable misconception. If it were true, it would mean that a duct narrowing to zero would yield an infinite flow velocity......
Flow velocity depends on the pressure difference between entry and exit of a duct, and in the case of an engine, where the flow constantly accelerates and decelerates, it also depends on the column length of the mass in the duct. It does not depend on the column's cross-area; twice the area would mean twice the mass per mm column length, but it also means that the cross-area exposed to the pressure difference is twice as big.
A smaller cross-area can have the effect that because of the reduced mass flow the pressure in the crankcase does not fall as quickly, which in turn may lead to a longer-lasting acceleration of the flow and thus a slightly higher top speed. But it will also mean less mass transport during the transfer phase.
The duct entry area of the Aprilia cylinder's B-ports is slightly smaller than their port exit area. This stems from the old obligation to develop cylinders that had to fit the existing crankcases of the Aprilia RSW engine, of which there are hundreds around. the RSA engine did not have this limitation, but simply enlarging the B-duct entries disturbed the scavenging, so the ducts were left as they were (and remember: while the B-ports' exit areas are only open part of the time, the entry areas are open all the time).
The transfer timing is 130° for the A-ports (they are really close to the auxiliary exhaust ports) and 132° for the B-ports and the C-port.
Aprilia drawings
I am willing allright, Myron; I am trying to promote two-stroke knowledge. But I'm short of time as it is.
Regarding testing: if you can think of anything at all, you can be sure it was tested.
Maybe the picture below will answer some of your questions. There is a lot more where this came from and I am willing to share, but you would have to convince your forum governor to allow uploading ZIP-files.

I cut the end off of the street triple muffler I have been using on my FXR and found and big ass restriction in there. Man, no wonder it was stifling it so bad and why it lost so much power! The bit on the left of the photo is the inlet, the right, is where it enters the muffler.
Anyway I cut that out and welded it back up. It's a bit louder but not by much and hopefully I'll get back most of the 4hp I lost from it
Have done a bit on the GP engine but I need to get a small right angle head grinder to do the cylinder side of the transfer ports so I've kind of stalled on that :sweatdrop

I'm not sure what Des's front end is doing, looks like the steering angle is all wrong the way it's turning in, or maybe it was just the lack of grip in the rain... Just looks a bit odd.

Yea it had its moments, lets say it was pretty bloody obvious between open and clear carb, a partial blockage and when I got a real good seal on the intake.
Still on the list requiring a resolution, although I was considering taking insperation from your full size chair Drew.

Gordie was good at blocking the right intake on the beemer with his right knee at he Barry Sheen last year. Took a while to figure that out.
Just a 90 degree bend, pvc plumbing pipe would do.
Or something cool, like mount the motor as the swingarm like a scooter.

Naaah. I don't feel guilty for a minute. Race bikes evolve or get discarded, always have. My RS's get more track time & are more successful then they ever would being a 125.
125s are a bad classic class as due to numbers in NZ, Posties will throw you all in, <600 or >600.

Mostly correct, sure use the chassis for buckets but try and keep them stock. I have seen 2 of my "discarded" race bikes sell for over 5000 pounds sterling, that would buy a lot of buckets. I would hoard all the not used RS bits (engine ect.) and leave the frame in one piece and keep the lot as a retirement plan.

A point to remember is Honda only made 500 per year. thats Right 500. NZ got more than our fair share re our Jap imports.

In my mind it's going to be the NX4 RS125s which are going to be worth anything substantial in the future but hey I may be wrong. I think if you're into motorcycle racing to make money, or preserve something so you can make money, you've got your priorities wrong.
Here's John Reid riding Ginger Molloy's Bultaco TSS, followed closely by Chris Swallow. Such a good battle. The TSS has got to be one of my favourite bikes ever, so cool.

You are very wrong, these bikes are the future classics due to the small numbers that were produced, but hey it's your bike you do what you feel is right. In my eyes these things are to be treasured as they will not be made ever again. I see you going on about Gingers bike, that is only here to be admired because someone preserved it. Bloody yoofs wait until you loose something you have grown up loving and you'll see what i mean. Rant over, as you were.

Nice rant. Very good point raised.
I suppose it comes down to perspective though. If you cut it up now, race it and enjoy the hell out it, you yourself are seeing the benefits now.
If you don't cut it up and save it until they become big again then you or someone else are seeing the benefit later on.
I don't think there is any right or wrong here, the only wrong would be cutting it up and then not actually using it.

Rob, you're the man, thanks again for letting me occupy your evening tuning the slug!
The red curve is with Karl Messiter's exhaust
The blue curve is with the current muffler I have on the bike
I knew the muffler I'm running was crap but thankfully after a bit of tuning it's not as bad as it was! Karl may struggle to get his muffler back however :nono:
A new intake trumpet went on after a few runs at different lengths and we tested a few different sized main jets until we found a winner.
Next up is an oil and filter change and a once over before the 2 hour race this month, stoked!

The FXR is back :sunny:
With the noisy megaphone exhaust it was making 19.7hp and 9.6 ft-lbs torque and pulling hard to the rev limiter.
It must be time to throw in a high comp piston.
Just to rub it in the KE makes 19hp at 8.5k (Shame it never gets to the track).

Kel, as much as I want to throw some time and money at that thing to really get it running/handling as best it can, I just don't have it available.
All the possible available time I have goes into sleep > work > study, repeat. ALTHOUGH I did dedicate the weekend to my forgotten mistress, the RS125. See below.

I noticed that the seals on the FXR forks were leaking the other day. I didn't have any seals on me so I just swapped the forks out with some from the parts FXR. Here's a question I've wanted to ask:
The FXR forks have a butt load of travel to them when you're hard on the brakes, is this alright? It doesn't seem like they bottom out at all. Have many of you had success with changing the springs/oil level/type etc?

Pumba
1st March 2014, 20:04
Think you will find the springs are coil binding which means you have effectively bottomed out but it is nice and progressive without the sudden clunk.
I put GSXR forks on which we managed to find some aftermarket springs for. Not sure what spring options there are for the FXR, but a set of emulators would not go miss

To be honest the stock forks work well enough on an FXR. Get the oil level and weight right and they are pretty damn good. Not as good as cartridge but fit for the application.
My take anyway.

You can also get more or less free improvements by changing the damper rod holes (usually weld them over and re drill smaller). I know some experts say that is a bad thing to do blah blah but it works and it is free.

F4 A grade is just getting ridiculous...
http://christophercain.cc/b/d/mtwellmar14/IMG_3068.jpg
Thats 5, count them 5 of the 13 people in A grade doing 29 second laps :sweatdrop
Average lap time over 12 laps in race two:
1 N. Diprose - 29.58s
2 R. Ford - 30s
3 G. Cunningham - 30.08s
4 A. Hassan - 30.17s
5 g. Veltmeyer - 31.16s

I keep looking at the one of Will, and wondering whether we shouldn't have given him tea and biscuits at that point, he looks so relaxed like he's on a picnic. at a guess, he was wishing he had his helmet off and had spent his usual 10 hours doing his hair. Oops, for the camera, I mean lol

Bring the 250 along and we can have an RS ride. I test rode a CB200 for a friend yesterday (mostly sucked apart from looking cool) and started dreaming again. This thing came up and was an absolute steal! So much so that I had to buy it.
I haven't had a road bike in 2 years or something dumb so I'm super eager to ride a bunch before winter sets in and kills all enthusiasm.

^ That's exactly what happened.
Went for a ride yesterday, dang this bike is fun! It has a 32mm Delorto carb and a K&N filter. The factory carb is a 28mm. I noticed it accelerates well through the rev range but when cruising at say 100 about 6-7k rpm, give it full throttle and it didn't want to accelerate properly. Sounds like it needs some tuning time.
Damn fun though, holy crap I'm hooked.

I spent some time out at ESE today with my GP engine and Rob. We decided on going down the copper route and started making the cylinder spacer to correct for the longer RGV250 rod.
295814
We spoke about utilising some of that extra copper and came up with this. The steep angle of attack should provide sufficient downforce considering the low speed of a kart track

Some progress tonight on the copper cylinder spacer.
Also got some fresh/er tires on the FXR. I spoke to Gavin at Tokoroa about the Conti-raceattack cut slick he was running on the rear of his FXR. He said it was going really well for him and preferred them to the Bridgestone. Whilst I know everyone has their preferences I thought I'd give it a go since David Diprose had some for sale after the nationals. I'm running a Bridgestone front. Will be so good to ride on some half decent tires again, those Dunlops I had on there were well and truly dead.

Damn that was a good weekend!
Congrats to:
Regan for taking out another round (possibly the champs if there isn't another round),
Rick and Scott for a well fought battle for second/third,
Tyler for impressing and winning the last race on Henk's FXR,
Will for picking his game up and qualifying 6th in A grade in front of a lot of fast riders,
Super thanks to:
All the organisers from the Pacific Club for putting on a professional and well organised race. The scrpteneering was well done with lot of people asked to add more protection and the noise control was also well done catching out two bikes which were modified quite easily.
Melissa, Brian and Tim for setting up and running the timing
Anyone who waved a flag
The lincolns for putting up a bunch of rowdy drunken bucket racers
Cheers to my dad Simon for taking the photos. I spent some time this morning editing and posting them so go have a look

I've spent forever looking into brakes, clutches, sprockets etc for the RS. This turned up today with the brake disk waiting at the post depot for me too.
CR/XR style clutch lever and perch from trademe. $19 delivered. Awesome.
I chose it because it had a stepped down lever, and didn't look like it was an eternity away from the bar.
I can already tell I'm going to have problems with these bars though. They certainly aren't comfortable.

You'll get used to the bars, just open up the angle some.
How strong is that clutch lever set up? I like these levers, 296662 great adjustment and they take a beating and stay together. Can get them on ebay, $25 including shipping!
