View Full Version : Adv Ride: Molesworth (North to South) & Altimarloch - 22 Dec 2012

As part of my heading south trip I plan to do a run through the Molesworth. I would rather not do this solo (due to the remoteness).
I plan to head through on Saturday the 22nd Dec
Anyone keen to join me for this?
I figure I might do Mt Patriarch in the AM, then head into the Molesworth around lunchtime and camp at the Cob Cottage overnight. Slow place plenty of photos and maybe a dip in the river along the way (I am predicting/wanting a hot hot summery day for this).
The date is flexible, I could probably push it to do it on the thursday/friday if people are keen on that date.

Good idea but you may want to postpone for a few days - suggest Rainbow on the way down, Molesworth/Acheron on way north
"The Acheron Rd will open on the 28 December 2012 and subject to weather conditions and fire danger will remain open until 7 April 2013, daily from 7am to 7pm."
.chris
19th October 2012, 14:47
That will teach me to plan ahead.
I assume with the Acheron Rd part being closed, I could still make it down and do Altimarloch?
Thanks for pointing out my stupidity Crim :pinch:

Those NADS blokes will be able to give you a betterer steer on that, - can still come down through the Rainbow, camp at St Arnaud very easy day (morning) ride through to Hanmer - there is even a couple of track coming off that one - you may still have to go to Star holdings (landowner) to get access as I think the toll road through there opens same time as Acheron
have you looked at Josh' site
http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/
bloody good SI based resource - he might even be up for a ride through there himself at that time
Wonder if I said to the missus that I had to go to St Arnaud to get her pressie I could get away with it?

Hey Chris, I'd prob be keen to show you around Mt Patriarch and Altimarloch around the 22 Dec date.
These are best done as a day ride from Blenheim, as they are both in-and-out type rides, ie, back the same way you came in. Mt Patriarch is a nice ride with good elevation, and you should allow a good 3 hrs to do it properly. You could ride it early in morn, then head down Wairau Valley to St Arnaud and then do the Rainbow thru to Hanmer in the afternoon.
Mt Altimarloch is accessable off Awatere Valley Rd (good to use Taylors Pass as a link road from Blenheim) and you can get up there without the Molesworth Road being officially open, but it's good to include it with a run right through the Molesworth. The Awatere Valley Rd is public until you get to the first locked gate, a few km before the old Molesworh Homestead, about 75km from Taylors Pass, and is still a great ride in and out.
As Crim says, the other alternative is to use Rainbow Road from the Wairau Valley end near St Arnaud, which is accessable via Star Holdings out of the main summer season. Just pay yer money, and get the key for the locked gates. They will tell you what to do about key returns etc.
Feel free to PM me if you need more info

I'm planning on doing the annual Molesworth/ rainbow ride to celebrate its' opening on the 28th Dec as I have been doing the past few years. Hopefully we will pass each other on the way.
This is one club run that is compulsory for all NADS to attend if they wish to keep their patches & ceremonial merkins.

Great, sounds like there might be a few riders (and bikes even) keen to join me. Which is great as I don't want to Jatz it up by myself.
Looks like it will be more likely a leave Blenhiem, do Patriarch, then down the Rainbow doing Mailing Pass and Edwards pass on the way through.
And of course what-ever else the Merkin wearing locals organise.
I will probably be arriving in the Mainland on the Wednesday or Thursday (17/18th) so if anyone is keen to mid-week it around the upper south shout-out, as I will be keen (assuming it involves camping/beer/advr).

just a note for yer...
Mt Patriarch is half way up the Wairu Valley to the Rainbow turn off..
BUT on the wrong side of the river "north bank" so you have to back track to
almost Blenheim to cross on to the other side..
"wish they would open the north bank gates up to St Arnard"

My Trip planning is coming along nicely, so it looks like I am still on for hitting the mainland on the 19/20th Dec which leaves me very keen to do Mt Patriarch then down the Rainbow (Mailing/Edwards on the way) on the 22nd.
I think I shall leave Altimarlock for the trip back north after the db1k.

Good to hear the planning is going well, I am still all go to join you and looking forward to it, I love that area, a good way to kick of the first official day of my break.
I am also winning the battle regarding access info, currently playing phone tag with two land owners:
1) for the New Creek to Denniston track. Access is looking promising, I will update once I pin down and can confirm with the new land owner
2) an extended route that includes the Macaulay Hut avoiding the typical in/out same way deal.
The dates are not set and can be fluid, I have a few days of work in-between then but will then have two weeks up my sleeve, a week either side of the DB1K. I'll also be heading down Mavora way, I may aim to do the #2 route above and use Macaulay hut as a base the night before the meet'n'greet of the DB1K, unsure right at this point as I haven't finalised my route. This may work in with you, socialites, Clint640, or whoever else. I will post info as it comes to hand

Good stuff, will be keen to see what you come up with. We will definitely have the Thurs & Fri (& maybe the Wed) before the Dusty free for some exploring & will be set up to camp anywhere. We will be staying at my sister's place near Staveley before that on the way down & were also thinking about a day trip out around Lake Heron / Double Hill plus Mount Olympus area if we can sort out access.

Times'a ticking on, should we lock in some dates and times to see if they all click together? A few questions to clarify and confirm your plan...
Is the plan still to do Mt Patriarch, Rainbow Road, Mailing and Edwards pass on the 22nd Dec?
If so, where are you heading from after Edwards Pass? Back out the same way, carrying on down south through Hanmer, camping up?
Have you organized permission for Rainbow road and gate access for Mailing/Edwards? Do you have the info to do this?
At this stage I will be riding/fishing on the 20th, 21st and camping up (maybe Rotoroa or Rotoiti campground), then aim to meet you at St Arnaud servo on the morning of the 22nd (we can arrange a time closer to date). I may join you for Mt Patriarch but I have some water lined up to fish a little more West so probably just join you for the Rainbow, Mailing, Edwards leg. My plan is then to either camp up at the end of Edwards pass or stay in one of the huts or get permission to head up and camp up the Clarence River on the 22nd
So, am I on track? Does that work in with you and your plan for the ride on the 22nd?

I had planned to get more organised sometime this week (thanks for the hurry up).
Yes plan is still Sat 22nd, Mt Patriarch, Rainbow/Mailing/Edwards.
No I have not yet organised permission (wanted to get a better idea of numbers before I did that, but I guess if I let them know it will be a group somewhere between 2-10 it would be ok?)
The info for access appears to be conveniently on your advguides site
A rough plan.....
10am Blenheim - I figure we do a 10am start from Blenheim (give people a chance to arrive) head up Mt Patriarch with a packed lunch to enjoy on the summit, not entirely sure how long this will take would assume 2hr round trip?
Down SH63 to St Anard arrving around 12:30/1pm
1pm - Head into Rainbow Road
As for plans afterwards I did have visions of heading down into CHCH, but I don't need to rush on that. Camping somewhere could be a good option Edwards pass or into the Clarence if time permits.
23rd I would need to make my way to at least CHCH.

Hey mate, not sure how I missed this.... yep, doable, but pretty much anything is doable if you get up and start riding at 1am :p Let me know if you are locking this in, I may join you depending on where I will be.
Rough times (generous):
Westport to Waimangaroa : 15mins
Waimangaroa to Denniston : 15mins
Denniston to New Creek : 2 hours
Iron Bridge to Mangles Valley Road: 45 mins
Mangles Valley Road/Breaburn Road to Porika : 40 mins
Porika to SH63: 40 mins
SH63 to start of Rainbow : 15 mins
Roughly a 5 hour route, fairly generous times but not accounting for mechanical issues. I didn't mention rider issues as I know your riding skills are of impeccable competition race standard
If you kicked off at 8am sharp you should breeze in to meet up at 1:30

Just to clarify with all the plans flying around... Chris - The northern assault is to ride from Renwick to Mt Pat & out again back to Renwick then you'll travel down to St Arnaud to catch up with the Western Alliance?
If so I may be interested in a lil tootle with ya for the Mt pat part. Is Mt Pat doable on road tyres Pete? i would be taking Schmidt if I was going. Is it very knarly or just access road stuff?
Be good to catch up with ya Crim but prob wouldn't commit to do a full on trip at this stage as my rib is still giving me gyp.

G'day Fellas,
yes still looking to do this - accom is actually at Kerr's Cnr - 2 ks south of Granity so we wouldn't have to leave until 08:07  - yes room for another - it is work accomodation, still trying to see if I can get up Friday but looking good at this stage, Denniston / New Creek is very weather dependent though (isn't it Josh?) so will have to look at the rainfall in days prior. Would be great to catch up Padmei but if you can't make it - no doubt see you on the Dusty Butt (looks like work may interfere again but I am moving heaven and earth) - would be great to ride with Schmidt again he just adds class to any assemblage!

With this new plan I may leave Karamea on the 22nd, that means if you want to crash here at the holiday batch you are more than welcome, heaps of room and 4 spare beds. Karamea is 91km from Westport, then from Karamea to Waimangaroa (to start the Denniston to New Creek track) it is 77km. We could then catch up with Crim on Sat morning at Waimagaroa for the route mentioned, then catch up with .chris at 1:30 for the St Arnard for the Rainbow/Mailing/Edwards and camp up somewhere. Presumably we'll all be camping up as time will be getting on starting Rainbow at 1:30 then doing Mailing and Edwards Pass.

Karamea is a fair bit further than Granity after the last day of work but could be done.
Whole trip would be easier for me starting a day later but if the Denniston to New Creek track is being done Saturday then so be it.
I'd maybe go for Crims closer bed to save a bit of time though I know the road to Karamea is great.
Blacktop all the way there on the WR250 leaving home late afternoon, won't that be fun.

The road into Karamea (Karamea Highway (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/248/karamea-highway.php)) is a rip snorter of a section of twisty ascending and descending tarmac, bloody good fun and great views! But, if you are leaving Chch late arvo after work and just blasting all the way without stopping it is 5 1/4 hours of solid tarmac to get here and the last hour can be a bit of a killer. Better to do it with more time up your sleeve and enjoy it rather than endure it. All good mate, I'll just meet you and Crim at Waimangaroa in the morning :niceone:

I have talked to the Rainbow access road people and I need to call closer to the time but they are happy with us going through on the 22nd.
Will just need to pickup the key from the homestead.
Nice job mate :niceone:
Josh, Carl et al - do we have a back up plan if Denniston through is no go
seems like a bit of water might be around
There is a little scrappy stuff pushing through mid week but nothing that concerns me at this stage from the forecasts I am looking at, if the long range forecast holds true we'll be basking in sun and riding in our speedos. Worst case scenario if mid week rain is heavy and makes the Mackley big, angry and unfordable we can look at alternatives such as Maruia Saddle up the Matakitaki. We can look at that closer to the time but I am confident the days we will be riding will be clear.
Keep the clouds away with your positive thinking Crim ;)

The road into Karamea (Karamea Highway (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/248/karamea-highway.php)) is a rip snorter of a section of twisty ascending and descending tarmac, bloody good fun and great views!
I found it even better if I put more than 5 psi in my tyres!
Be great to see any of you guy's over here, I'll be along for the jaunt on the 22nd.

Met the boys at the turn off (after pete chased & caught me - leading me back the proper way:facepalm:)
Met Chris who despite being a JAFA & KTM rider is a nice bloke:yes:
i didn't realise Nrthbank road was so long.
We rode in & out of fog as we climbed higher & took the photo opportunities as they came. Didn't seem to take long to get to the top. The road was pretty well graded till the upper portions where there was a reasonable amount of loose schaley type rocks. There were no issues with anyone.
We stopped at the top & had a natter before nipping back down so Chris could meet up with the other crew coming from Karamea.
Thanks for the ride chaps, its' one I will be doing again!!:niceone:

Good to catch up with you lot today, I always enjoy a ride up Mt Pat and it makes a nice little outing from my place with plenty of varied terrain.
I haven't been out on the bikes much lately but that was enough to get the adv buzz going.... bring on the DB!
