Has anyone managed to get something containing a Lithium Ion battery into the country legitimately?? For instance a GoPro Hero3 or GoPro Wifi Backpack?? Lots of carriers refuse to take them.

Can't help, but I know many airlines are aligning their policies with some external standard that limits items over X energy per Y Kg.
Lithium Ion batteries potentially fall into that category. Laptops, tablets and phones are affected.
Edit: try getting supermagnets past Quantas.

So is that likely to be a problem when flying in the future? Because it isn,t at the moment. We just did four big flights with 5 devices with Li,ion batteries. Was no issue at customs.

Yeah ordered tablets, phones and just Lithium Ion on their own no problem.
Don't know if they knew about it but went through every time.
NZ post allows it with youshop I think

I suspect it's one of those policies that are "implimented" at head office level but that are far too silly to actually make it as far as the front line staff.

Hope it stays that way! I have enough trouble as it is, i always get pulled aside for extra scanning. A bit nervous the rubber glove thing will be next!

This week I received a pair of LED mountain bike lights that came with Li-ion batteries. I intend to modify them for use on the GSX to suplement the poor OEM lights.

I don't see why anyone would care if you brought batteries into the country.

Just got a new laptop battery shipped in from Hong Kong, no issues and was here in under a week. Wasnt declared as battery (had a blank declaration with no value shown either) and was delivered delivered by nzpost.

Instead of using air freight why not put it on a boat M,takes awhile but possibly easier. When i say takes awhile expect around 3 months:brick:well thats what it took last time i got something sent that way.

No. GoPro also list it as one of the things they won't ship to New Zealand, so that's another wee problem.

My reading of this is more based on getting the wifi certified for NZ rather than the battery being used.
Once certified they won't be sending the camera via USPS because of the battery - but they can send the camera via alternative carriers.

I believe lithium ion batteries have been tagged as a potential security concern because of the rate at which they can discharge. In certain circumstances they can be made to behave in an unacceptably volitile manner.
Airlines get decidedly twitchy about things that might start with B.

Might of had something to do with the "Fuck Australia" Tee shirt an all the Tatts,,but when I came home from Oz I got turned over by NZ customs at the air port in a big way.
Then when we went to collect our container,,,the guy stood back an had a smoke while we unloaded it into the back of two double horse floats,,never even took a look at anything.
All the shit I could of bought home,,,but didn't:facepalm:

See I was under the impression that if the battery was in the item you can bring it in. Batteries by themselves are a hit and miss affair.
I read it on eBay but that could be a genetic response.
Sent from one of those flashy touch thingies on a app dohicky

I routinely both deliver send out packages containing Lithium ion batteries. Mostly phones, tablets, and laptops bought online or items shipped back to owners. Also warrantee repair shipments etc. They all require a sticker identifying the presence of said battery and they mustn't be auctually in the device. Outbound, the same is required and as long as all the boxes are ticked and declarations made ion the commercial ( customs ) invoice, there shouldn't be a problem. Some shippers probably just cant be stuffed with the extra requirements and their shipping policies will reflect that. Try sending some home made cookies to the USA. That makes batteries a cake walk.

Yeah the Contour+2 is a much better buy I reckon. But you still have the same problem of trying to get something with a Lithium Ion battery into the country.
Damantis has it covered though.

That was the page I was reading - NZ is listed under the section regarding the wifi products certification.
Further down the page is the discussion regarding the batteries - as USPS will no longer accept them, GoPro wil no longer ship any product containing a battery to the places listed. Most of the places listed are pretty small and other freight options aren't available.
