View Full Version : Christchurch to Dusty Butt, Fri 18 January 2013

As per the title.......
For those of you doing the Dusty Butt ride who are staying in Christchurch Thursday night and want to meet up with other DB entrants for a leisurely day ride down to Fairlie register here.
The plan is to meet at the Caltex service station, corner Yaldhurst and Russley roads (near airport) at 0830 for briefing then head away soon after.
Planned route will involve riding up a section of the Waimakariri river recreation area before heading up the Rakaia river thru Glenfalloch Station to Lake Heron Station then on to Mayfield for gas and a feed before heading thru the Orari Gorge to Fairlie.
I have spoken to all four Highcountry stations that we cross and have secured us access. The tariffs for that access are $10 per rider per station so I will need to collect $40 from you each at the Caltex servo.
The route is reasonably tame and is generally suitable for two up riding or for loaded up solos.
Last year we had 50 odd riders in our group so it's a good chance to catch up with fella kbers.
If you're keen let me know by way of a reply so I can collate numbers to pre warn the farmers

Have a safe new years, i'll see you on the 18th
Cheers Matt

Though I might as well put the thread up early so you Norf Islanders and Nelsonians can sort your shit, and plan to be in Christchurch Thursday night.
It was great to see a good number of North Islanders on this ride last year, always good to put a face to a avatar so look forward to reaquainting. The scenery is great (as is the beer at Mayfield) so look forward to catching up :woohoo:

That would be fine but you'll need to stop in at Blue Mountain station on the way past to pay there tarrif, from memory you were with us last year so presume you'll know where to go and won't get lost

I grew up around that area (spend or holidays riding shitty farm bikes around Blue Mountain station), but yes I will check-in with the station owners.

You guys will need to submit your passports for approval and apply for temporary citizenship for the SI

You also need to declare if you have any hidden bike accessories like pontoons on KLRs :eek5:

Hi Ben,
Last year I allowed about 90mins from departure time to get to Blackford rd but due to a couple of breakdowns and others not following close enough behind and thus getting lost it was more like two hours to there. This year I think it would be better if I text a team leader of any group overnighting in Methven etc...otherwise about 10:30 but be there earlier as 30-35 of us won't be waiting for one or two

Likewise last year we had a number of riders turning up after stated departure time.
If for what ever reason you are going to be late for my briefing, we won't be waiting...best you head via tarmac straight to the Rakaia River bridge on SH 77 :brick:

Assuming you make it across the strait!! Good luck with that, sounds like a cool mission
And will see you on the pre Butt.

By the way I use to own a Dommie, couriered it in London for about 10,000km and took it for a short trans Europe tour. Bloody good bike, unfortunately my starter motor blew and so I soon got sick of kick starting it as a courier so it had to go
Always liked that twin exhaust rear look, wasn't so fond of the ugly screen it had :oi-grr:

What he said, I am keeping an eye on numbers, have told station owners that will be around the forty mark, if it climbs any higher I'll just go faster and lose a few :devil2:

Thinking I might have to put a rough route map together but not going to go the whole hog with mileages etc..most of the guys who have put their names down did the route last year so shouldn't (famous last words) get lost. Thou's that haven't we'll try to buddy them up.
Fully intend the pace to be slower than the "DB", would like the ride to be fairly social with a compulsory beer at Mayfield etc that way we can have a good night in Fairlie

If you have organised a place to go then we should support them as a group.

I hope you take this post in the light hearted way it was intended. :)

Matt, without starting a shitfight as in the db1k thread, are the scrub fires in Canty gonna affect any of this ride? Just wondering if the landowners may be a wee bit paranoid.

Looking forward to it.

Going to give each land owner a reminder call Wednesday night and will mention we are consious of fire risk and that all riders will BE CARRYING A FIRE EXTINQUISHER
Enjoy the ride down, see u Friday

******CHANGE OF MEETING POINT********

"I've been internalizing a really complicated situation in my head"

Hey guys,

Haven't made decision lightly but numbers have blown out a bit to around 50 riders now.
The Caltex at Russley has a reasonable sized forecourt but think it would be taking the piss having 50 odd bikes parked up blocking access etc.

So I have decided it would be best to meet at a more suitable venue with larger car park.

Meeting point will now be at the Yaldhurst Hotel carpark...15 West Coast Rd (SH 73, 2km west of the Caltex)...see u there before 0830..earlier the better so I can collect koha's etc before briefing

Sorry for late notice but have had an extra 12 people join over weekend

Regards Matt

Good move Matt, plenty of room out there, can you tell me what the koha needs to be as in $10 notes etc to make it easy for you.

Agreed, good move on the meeting place change.
I obviously pay far to much attention to what's what in these threads, TR here's your answer, looking forward to another catch up. :niceone:

Hey fullas,
Just trying to get organised and playing with some spreadsheets, I have recorded interest from the following names:
(lots of people)...
.......
.....
Just a reminder I'll be collecting 4x $10 in koha's for each of the 4 stations per person at the briefing / Blackford Rd (2x $20 is fine) so plse have that handy

Make sure you are fuelled up and ready to go at **NOW YALDHURST PUB CARPARK*** prior to my 8:30 briefing, we'll be on our way shortly after that and won't be waiting for stragglers (we'll see them at Fairlie), we will be riding using a pointsman system with myself leading and a nominated rotating tailend charlie (volunteers would be appreciated)

See you then,
Cheers Matt

I'm guessing possibly a little later say 9.45-10.00 assuming there aren't any issues..think herding cats!
There are about 10 of you meeting us there so you won't be on your own, some have pm'd me their cell numbers which I intend texting for a progress update when we get to the Waimak Gorge Bridge (30min from Blackford), you're welcome to do the same, you're probably aware Methven is only 10mins from the Blackford

Thanks Matt, i met up with the group there last year so i know where it is.
I wont burden you with having to text, I just didnt want to have to get up too early just to sit on the side of the road.:blank:
I will be there from 9.30 ish onwards.

Take the text !! or the hook up with those already receiving it.
Pulling apart a gps track log from last year it could be closer to 10:30 before everyone arrives (tail end at least) but then maybe it will go smoother this year... though the Waimak roading (as of yesterday evenings look) is a bit cut up from recent flooding, quite fun actually but could be messy in a dust cloud.
Few small sand traps, the odd hole and log lying about :niceone: and I hope to see those trials guys go over the concrete cube road blocks, rest of us can go between them :sweatdrop
Wonder what the scree slope crossings will be like this round further on :wings:

Hey Mark,
Couple of things,
thanks for the offer of being a tailend Charlie, intend breaking the day down to four sections to spread around the tailend charlie task, if you can do one section, transalper is doing another and hoping for a volunteer on the other two sections, that would be fantastic.
Yes we do go thru Ashwick Flat....I haven't entered the TT2000 but are going to ride with a mate on one or two of the days...do you have a riding companion or would you like to tag along with us?...talk to you about it Friday
Cheers Matt

Mattsdakar rides a KTM now?

Cheeky bugger, bearings were fine this year however the radiator not so good.....

Ride down turned a bit messy at end, didn't get to Mayfield to approx 13:30 because of a couple of hold ups, then there was only two staff doing meals due a funeral happening so food took a long time to come out.

In the end half decided that Orari Gorge might take to long if the water was to high so Paul Dellis led a group thru Hanging Rock area to Fairlie via backroads.
I took a hardy 15 odd thru Orari Gorge and had a great ride, final water crossing was only a little over axle deep, Coll must have thought he was looking a bit dusty so decided he should take himself and the bike for a swim there but didn't have any dramas getting it going.
In the end both groups arrived in Fairlie within 15mins so all was sweet and the Rugby club feed was enjoyed by all
