on our way home tonight 2051 traveling at 80kpa as it very windy, a car comes up behind me sits that close behind me I thinking they're checking my valve clearance or just being a total asshole, I decided the latter, then the car pulls out at the start of a broken yellow line & over takes me... bearing in mind mrs Shrek is just in front of me 10m then the car just indicates & pulls back in & it's either hit the brakes & let them in or get cleaned up, so I brake let them in... by now I'm :mad: then the @#$%* pulls right up behind mrs Shrek, less than a metre... (now I'm realy pissed) thinking they're going to run her down... so I pulled out & pushed my way back in between them with a few gestures etc... & the car sat right up my ass for the next 10 or so ks then over takes.... after car over took & was clear of mrs S I then cought up & sat back about
20m & follow the car into Roxburgh & side road to find the driver was late 50's or in 60's & the attitude was you're only doing 80ks get out of the way.....:angry2: I would have got off to teach it some manners... but if I'd hit her..... so tomorrow it's off to mr :Police: & do it by the book

I in no way think that what the car driver did was appropriate/safe/good in any way. Team S are totally right in being miffed (putting it mildly)

However, I still don't see why they didn't/couldn't pull over. If 80kph was appropriate for team shrek, that's totally fine. Might not have been appropriate for the car driver. Pulling over would have save them some grief and defused the situation and made it safer for all involved.

K, so here I am, 6 months since I've been able to ride anyhow.(No not bike related, thanks you doubting thomas'es) 3 years ago I got My wife onto a motorbike of her own. She now rides a 400 Nonda and is riding it well.
She doesn't always do the speed limit in places, she is adept at moving out of other road users way where she can and does so without complaint or anger.
We ride together and with close friends as often as we can.
I have had other road users and yes this includes other bike riders, pass me and then proceed to bully her with their superior size or speed,simply because they can.
I too wait until it is safe for her and then go after the barstards for all I'm worth.my old Yammy thou is no slouch and I am not afraid of anyone in a car.
I go after them simply to get their rego number, but have ended up in some pretty weird road ballets.
What I find unpleasant about this thread is the apparent attitude among our own that if you are for ANY reason unable or unwilling to get out of the way then you should get off the road.
You lot need shooting with a ball of your own shit!
I'd wager that some are just shit stirring, but some are not and their true colours are most definitely flying high and proud.Pity you have no pride in supporting your own kind!
I'd suggest to those whose only advice is to get out of the way and or off the road that you have neither read Shrek's story properly or don't give a a rats arse about fellow bikers or about the standing in this community of the OP.
Please don't forget that many motorcyclists have lost their lives due to inattention and or deliberate acts of sabotage by other road users, mainly car drivers, who do this sort of thing and drive on oblivious to what they have left behind.
Understand exactly where you are coming from Shreky, bloody scary for you, watching Mrs Shrek getting monstered for no good reason and even worse to find it's a middle aged woman who couldn't be bothered waiting a minute or two for a safe overtake.
Report the bitch and make sure Mrs Shrek goes with you to lay her own complaint about a car driving using their vehicle to attempt to remove her form the road.
Then worry it like a dog with a fucking bone until something happens.

Unlit, country roads, very windy, lots of ups downs and roundy rounds, roads you northern city riders would balk at riding on at night,
Yet here was a man and his wife, she on a small light 250, puttering home on a stormy night, riding is a safe manner, and you judge them?
Come down south and ride southern roads at this time of the year ever day, see if your attitude changes.
Or are you too afraid to get your chrome dirty, or wear out your continentals, or actually experience riding in conditions that really test your skills. I don't mean high speed skills either, snow Ice, mud, sleet, wild winds, and lazy drivers.

It was at the time calm ... and quite cold. That is snow on the hill ... as there is at the moment. It is also daylight in the pic's ... Shrek was at night.
To pull over into that spot I could not have done at 80 km's ...

As I recall ... the law only requires you to pull over to let traffic pass if it is safe to do so. He did not believe it was.
With Shrek's experience ... his ability to decide on this this ... would by far exceed yours, Regardless of how long you manage to live.

While I agree moving left/slowing down is the best thing to do, it reads to me like the car driver had an opportunity to pass safely. Sounds to me like the conditions were shit and the OP felt he did the right thing at he time. I would do similar, or worse if my wife was threatened in this manner.

Because to stop on that road in gale force north westers is to not be able to start off again. Bike have been blown off that road in strong winds, and the safest thing is to keep moving at 60 - 80 kmh and don't stop. Ask Oldrider, or Timg, or a few others about riding that road in strong conditions this time of year and see what comments you get about stopping.

I remember riding home on my scooter from work a few months ago and I wasn't going fast enough up a hill for some dickhead's liking. It was dark and freezing cold, and he tailgated me and kept flashing his headlights to get me to pull over. First off, I'm fucked if I'm going to pull over for someone like that. Secondly, there WAS nowhere to pull over, traffic was bad and visibility was poor. As soon as I got up the hill, dickhead passed me on the median strip and gave me the finger. If I'd been fast enough to keep up to him, I'd have followed him home and punched his mirror out.

Not sure what it is about the road between Roxburgh and Alex, apart from the Police gravitating to Fruitlands whenever the weather is nice. I just about got knocked off by lightning once along there and another time watched a bike fail to get round that 55k curve at Gorge Creek. I never knew Harleys sparked that much sliding along the road. Very pretty.

I've done the road in question and like Mrs Shrek a fairly new rider to boot, I agree with Shrek! Regardless of what or how anyone is riding, the yellow line is there for a reason. Shrek knows that road as do a few others and believe me I would listen to what they say in regards to it all!

I've had a similar experience on the Desert road in winter in heavy fog.......I couldn't, see the road properly at 60k, which was faster than I wanted to go......didn't stop cars blasting past at 120 and immediately being swallowed in the murk.........

I think there was a few days this year the wind wasn't blowing a gale up there ... you might get lucky.

At 105 kg's ... you're just a little fella. But bring food ... Shrek isn't as mean if he's eaten ...

Only half of the road is uphill ... so your little bike should do that bit ok. If it's not into a headwind .... the Nor-wester brings the rain and the southerly brings the snow. So bring snowshoes and waterproofs ... just in case ....

The higher parts of the road is actually higher than the Desert road summit ... so bring warm gear too ...

But let us know when you're coming down ... I'm sure there is a few of us down here that want to see how it should be done ... on a real motorbike.

That's a nice piece of roadway ... it is one of my favourite bits of road in that area.

I think he is certain he wont need training ... Who are we to argue ... ???

Akaroa Highway got boring on a bike about 15years ago for me, ended up being more fun to drift around the corners in an old series 3 lwb land-rover than to be continually stuck behind slow cars on a bike, at least with the landy, they got out of the way really fast.

well, if you can talk shit why cant I......and as for my bike, fuck, its 33 in 6 weeks, still can pull 140mph+ still capable of 12 sec, standing 1/4 mile..... but it cant stop for shit, cant corner very well, still, does not need a computer to keep running, can be fixed in the side of the road with a screwdriver and a 6" creasant. Starts regaurdless of the tempurature outside.

Aside from the fact that that particular road is not particularly Ambo and Fire truck friendly ...( but you would know that if you ever rode it) so it would be doubtful if either could catch up with Shrek ... even at their speed, but if they could ... Come on, you're starting to make this road sound like something magical, like the northerners do with Akaroa and the northern northerners do with the Coro Loop. I would love to drive the road from Roxburgh to Alex with the nee naas on because I would not have to worry about going over a crest or round a corner at warp factor nine and having to walk home. For those who don't know it it is a lovely flowing road with some fast corners and a couple of dips that make you think of what you had for breakfast. There are a couple of tight corners but all in all a good bit of road with sod all driveways and sod all intersections. There are a few places where you wouldn't want to get it wrong, and it is very dark at night. It's not the Kawarau Gorge though. Now if that was about 200km longer then there really would be a road to get excited about.

There is only one tight corner, and as you say, all the rest are nice flowing sweepers. But what the origional post is about is that it is an alpine road, and subject to alpine winds. When we get 10 - 15 kt (18 - 27 kmh) winds in Alex, the Alex - Roxburgh road can see wind speeds of 30 - 50 kts (55 - 90 kmh). Because the road does wind back on itself through the gorges that wind can strike from either side.

I have had my bike actually picked up and deposited on the other side of the road with both wheels clear of the ground in a strong cross wind. Mrs Shrek has not been riding long and congrats to her for riding that road at night in a strong wind.
