Posting overseas, can some explain this?

A week ago i boxed up a carbon screen took it down the PO for a price to give the buyer,guy did his thing and $20 was the price,all good informed the buyer and he was happy.I go down today to send it and on the scales it goes,lady asked me to "pass it through" and she starts with the tape measure,whilst shes doing her thing i say "last week the bloke said around $20" she finishes does some sums and says "$110":killingmei say "na no way" more than a little surprised,she cracks on about there being 2 ways to work it out so i say to her "do it the other way" as you wouild eh.Whilst she was doing that the lady next to her behind the counter mumbled something about "it being my responsibility" as there was at this stage a heap of people in line behind me i didnt ask what she was on about,other lady finishes her thing and says "$28",i say "fine".Ive been sending stuff round the world for years and never encountered this before,anybody know what they were on about?

Yes, so totally your responsibility. You should have found out that there were two different ways to work out the pricing, appraised yourself of both and known that when you went to post it they would use the other way. All comes down to letting your crystal ball get cloudy and not using tea leafs.

Bet they get a few 1st time overseas posters walk out in a huff then eh,ive never in all these years come across it before to be honest,$100 to send a piece of Carbons a tad :tugger:I am all for a bloke with a shop making a quid for his trouble but $28 compared to a $100s a bit rich,made worse by the fact she would have known there was a cheaper way to work it out when she started.

No idea mate but will have a look later.I bought the screen off a guy in the States but was so long ago i cant remember what price i paid to get it here.

Probably, but short of 'prepaid' boxes and bags, all freight is charged for in this way. In fact I think you'll find even all of those prepaid boxes and bags have a weight limit.

I still dont get it mate,sorry.Why is there such a difference in the 2 prices i was given for the same article and as ive posted oe for years and never been given 2 prices before not to mention an absurd one like this have i just been lucky all these years.

Sounds to me like one of the PO staff (probably the 2nd one) made a booboo. If it was me I would have disputed the 3rd ($28) quote too, asked to speak to the manager maybe. 2 very different prices from the same person on the same visit sounds like someone doesn't know what they are doing.

I would guess it depends how they intend to forward your package, for instance weight if by plane or size if by boat. Doesn't totally figure as the bulk in the plane is also a factor but it is just a guess example. Anyhow it is not something they should just be doing but instead they should be giving you the information and you decide. I your case I guess the choice was on price not dispatch method nor transportation time.

Say your parcel is a cubic metre and weighs 1kg.

The freight rate might be: 1m3 or 5kg for $5 (most charge the higher rate), so:

By volume, 0.2m3 per $1
By weight, 1kg per $5

So your parcel is:

By volume 1m3 at 0.2m3 per $1 = $5
By weight 1kg at 1kg per $1 = $1

Simple as that. AFAIK it's because of air freight (fuck all isn't air freight now)... planes can only carry so much weight, and they only have so much volume. On a boat who gives a fuck, a container of bench vices doesn't bother it, but it'll make an aircraft fly sideways (heh nah, but it'll stop them loading any other freight on the plane, wasting the rest of the volume in it... which is fine, but that heavy package needs to pay for the entire volume wasted).

Most people walk in and post so don't get to know about the two pricing schemes. Reading imdying's explanation seems to me they are screwing up anyhow. Should weigh and measure the item then the price is on which of the plane's parameters it is most using. A bit like your carry on bags or suitcase, they have to be within a certain size and weight.
Typical NZ customer service, keep them in the dark, treat them like idiots and then blame them for not knowing. Of course the typical customer is also your typical driver :crazy: and so is your typical service rep. :wacko: Fair bet they don't understand it either.

True that,from memory the basket etc went to a bloke off the TL site for the price of post,he was in need and i had put a later model 6 bolt clutch in.The screens a little different and the bloke cant get one over there.

NZ Post does have a calculator on their website - you can pay for it on line too, saving the vagaries of the ladies at the counter. Been caught out a few times myself.

When getting a price from my local postslop, the ladies write the price on the parcel. When it is taken back to send, they just look at what they had written and do a very quick re-check to confirm.


The worst thing is waiting for the kiwiwankers clogging up the queue...
