Having worked in the advertising and photography industry, and also as a journalist who at one time interviewed a number of models, I can tell you some things for certain:
1. You don't have to be beautiful or pretty to be a model, just good facial bone structure and/or height
2. Photoshop can work wonders
3. Makeup can work wonders
4. Lighting can work wonders
5. Clothes can work wonders
6. Camera angles can work wonders
7. Models are over-hyped skinny bimbos (well, most are - I actually met one who was a national athlete and a Masters of Business Management degree holder)

Cosmetic surgery may alter a person superficially into an ideal, but doesn't change the person inside.
