Let's revisit 1992 V 1982.

1992 alternative comedy was...interesting.

Though a quick review indicates popular US music was mainly shite:

In the early eighties we were still getting over the 70's weirdness, but some of these are still on my playlists:

In 1992 I was riding - 1971 Yamaha XS1 650, '74 Suzuki TS400, '81 Honda XR200, '81 Honda C50....and possibly various others.

In 1982 I was riding - 1961 Norton 600, 1971 BMW R60/5, 1954 BSA M20, a Puch scooter of some sort, BSA A65 powered racing sidecar on the road....and possibly various others.

...in 1982 I was working on a semi sub in the North Sea, had money falling out my pockets...had been to most European circuits following the F1 or 500 GP bikes around the place...spent the rest of my time following motorcycle racing in all its forms around the UK...met Joey Dunlop on the Island but saw Dennis Ireland beat them all and I thought I might just stay over that way for the rest of my life...

...by 1992 a few wrong turns and a woman/wife that changed, or was it me, took most of what I had...she did not contest the ownership of my Triumph, which I suppose is one small mercy...

...I preferred the 1982 period, myself...

In 1982 i bought my first brand new bike, a Suzuki PE175Z.
At the time I was driving a 1966 Austin 1100, so I had my priorities right..

In 1992 I traded my RMX250 on a YZ250WR - I loved both those bikes.
My car was better as well - I had a 1991 Peugeot 405SRI.

But by the 90's it'd all got a bit blurry.

At the time I was driving a 1966 Austin 1100,

Oh, cars too - in '82 it was maybe an Austin 1800...if the Series II Oxford had died by then. Might also have been the CA Bedford with Vanguard 6 engine for bike transport, for the Bultaco 350....forgot to mention that.

In '92 I was back in an Austin 1800.

Music - in '82 we had a stereogram, you could stack records to get continuous play. Some LP's had 1 and 3 on one side, 2 and 4 on the other so it would go 1,2, then flip them for 3 and 4.

In '92 we were picking up old vinyl for 20 cents an LP, great times to expand the collection. We had a fancy machine with twin tape decks, so was a sort of recording studio - we could lay down tracks on one side of the tape, then do the other.

They were pretty ancient in '82. Notice I don't list anything new, I don't do that. We have to go all the way back to 1972 when I had a brand new Yamaha CT2 to find me with something up to date.

In '82 I turned 7. I remember being dragged along to horse shows, some of which were hours away. Bored on the trips my mother suggested I count horses I saw, I instead counted motorbikes.

In '92 I turned 17. School books were covered in drawings of bikes, had a black and white 14" TV in my bedroom to watch the GP500's battle, bike mags scattered around my room. In the garage I had an RM125 and was saving up for a GS850 one of my brothers friends had for sale (I eventually got it). We lived about 25km out of ChCh where I attended school, so blagged early morning rides to school on the back of my other brothers friends GSXR750. It meant I got to school at 7:45am, and winters were cold but it was worth every second of it.

1982 - I was 12 and got my first motorcycle - a 1980 CR80RA Elsinore. Perfect learner's bike........

1992 - I had a break from riding (briefly) until the following year when I bought a 1984 Yamaha FJ1100. At the time, I had a gas-guzzling 1974 BMW 3.0SA. It could honk along though !!

In 1982 I was 27 ... and living in Wellington

I think that was the year I owned a Morrie Thou - split windscreen job .. sold it shortly after to a guy who drove it from Wgtn to Orcland ..

I also had a Triumph 650 (Meridan Triumph) and a couple of BSA Bantams ...

1992 - 37 years old ... living in Hawke's Bay ... with a Holden Ute - classic hoon car and ...

The same Triumph, one BSA Bantam, a BSA B33, a BSA C15 and a BSA A7, a 1937 Triumph 500cc single (5H), a Honda FT400 (commuter scooter) and a Honda CB250R (project to build a racing bike - never happened), as well as two Triumph Tiger Cubs in my garage ...

10 years later I was down to the FT400, one BSA Bantam and a BMW R100GS Paris Dakar ... (and the Nissan Terrano).

Now I have a pair of Bandits (and the Terrano) - I'm not sure if that is progress ...

Interesting BD!!

82': 8ish lol, with a suitcase record player with only two 45's. "Come on baby lay your love on me" and "Do ya think I'm sexy", scratching around. Roaming the neighbourhood with the local boys on my three speed something or rather, digging out the backyard making huts, sniffing round the dump and cleaning things up or fixing things to add to the dugouts! Bullrush and playing in bare feet until the street lights came on.

92: 18ish, flatting for two years already, rockin the Datsun 180B or perhaps had moved onto the XY Ute.. first festival Duddings Lake and AC/DC concerts possibly Pantera and RHCP? under my belt.
Sitting on all sorts of bikes, might have had my first xr250 after near killing myself on my then partners TT600? Hmmmm..

It took me a while to find anything from '92 that has stood musically since - but there are some gems:

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Big Dave again"

I loved Cold Chisel - saw them live a few times ... Brilliant ... I still play tracks like Khe San and Flame Trees while driving ..

But yeah .. 1992 was the year Billy Ray did Acky Breaky Heart .. not a great year . but it was the year Eric Clapton released his Unplugged album

Over here in 82 we had INXS, AC/DC, Chisels, Angels, Radiators and the likes blowing the doors off the pub rock circuit. We used to go out riding our bikes to gigs or the pubs every night of the week in those halcyon Sydney summers.

The airwaves were full of Split Enz, Mi-Sex - they were much bigger is Aus than home - Dragon and Dave Dobbyn (maybe a bit later).

Great idea for a thread BD.

In 82 I was 21 y.o. living in London and riding a Yamaha XS650 Custom. Best beers in the world so I can't remember all that much.
Fav music of that year was Altered Images (actually just the hot chicky babe Clare Grogin) , Jam, Clash, XTC, Tom Robinson Band, Pretenders, NOT UB40, NOT the Police, NOT WHAM etc
92- Living in Wellytown. Dull music so who cares. Bike was somewhere between the Harley 1200 Sporter or the GS500? Odd companions I know.

1982- 14 years old and had a 3 speed Releigh treadly, and listened to The Human League
1992 - having spent my Bursery money (thank you taxpaers) on a B120 4 years before, I had finished Uni the year before, tried another degree when I couldn't get a job, hated it and dropped out when I got a job.I now had a GT250X7, and in that year, got a RZ350, which I fitted with a set of Ledar spannies from the UK. I later traded this for a GSXR750L, and have missed it a lot since. Around 92 or sometime after as I recall, I also started racing once I started getting a paypacket, with my mighty Impulse. Still got it for sentimental reasons.
Music was now Gary Moore, Led Zep and U2.
