Seems like lately one car out of every ten out there is being driven around with one of it's headlights broken. Scary thing is that these people either don't know or care and it probably won't be addressed till the WOF comes up for renewal.
*Sigh*

Also it's difficult to tell from a distance what size vehicle is actually coming toward you.
Which brings to mind a story told by Sanjeev on Top Gear. Whilst driving in India he sees a single headlight coming toward him. Knowing how it works in india, many vehicles have headights out(to save power apparently)
Sanjeev says to his cousin beside him "I cant tell if this is a truck or a scooter coming toward us"
"Or" his cousin replies " 2 scooters carring a wardrobe" !!! :weird:
Possibly a location story, but

I drove my van to work yesterday morning, and couldn't see where I was going on dip....when I got to work I found the left headlamp out on dip.Tonight I brought home a bulb for my daughters flatmate, his left headlamp is out on dip - then my wife says,''my left headlamp went out on dip last night too!''
It's catching - don't come near me,I think I'm contagous!
This is true by the way,not evil clown stirring.

Hey it's better than some places I've lived in where you will be going a long and catch up to a vehicle with no rear lights in the middle of the lane, so have to slam on the anckors. :argh: Such is life.

have mal-adjusted lights. one pointing south, one west, and the spotties directly at head height. they used to check beam direction at wofs, but nowadays, it seems the fucking-close-enough method is the call of the day. where it is sufficient to just stand in front of the car and verify that all lights are simply working.
my neighbours right headlight on his falcon twin cab ute has been out for months. :weird: obviously cant afford both petrol AND bulbs...

But if they all fixed them it would take away the game I play at nights when driving! I count the number of vehicles with only one headlight - my best was 27 in a trip from Wellington to Levin, but I did get 12 from Porirua to Lower Hutt one night too.
Pisses me off greatly, bet it's not the only thing wrong with the vehicle too. And have you noticed that invariably, the headlight that IS working, is on high beam? Feel like shooting it out...

my favourite night driving game is called "high-beam-the-mofo-with-their-fog lamps-on" (only when im driving the shopping basket though. if im on the bike, i dont hassle no-body in a cage...)

I drove 90km to work yesterday,I wonderd why my lights were so useless, but never twigged a lamp was out until I bought the van into the workshop and told the apprentice to adjust the bloody headlights correctly, because I saw him adjust them last week when he changed the front bumper - ''but it's not going he said''.Doesn't take a lot of brains to be stupid.....
Something I just found out about maladjusted headlights - one trick we do with plastic lenses that have become clouded is give them a buff with cutting compound....they come up like new! But it destroys the pattern and they have ''flare''.....I don't do the cheap trick anymore - clouded headlamps now fail a WoF.
Don't try your high beam trick with me - my Pajero has SIX headlamps,4 on highbeam....illeagal I know, but it sends those who give me a flick off the road into the bushes.

Counted 36 on the way home from Auckland monday night. And that's not counting the ones coming up to pass me from behind. Kept thinking there were alot of bikes out that night.
Mate of mine has his light out aswell. Told him that and he said all joking like, "But that makes me look like a motorbike bro..."

430 Watts - that could suck a battery dry in minutes....lucky I got 2 eh? But my charge light keeps coming on and off....I might be late to work some morning soon.
I think I mentioned it in another thread - the consumer has decided they pay too much for halogen bulbs, the market has responded and supplied them with cheaper bulbs....the result is one eyed cars.Just because a product is more expensive doesn't mean the retailer is a rip off artist....they just may have your welfare as a concern....

A handful of sparkplugs could reduce that number. :motu:

what made me spit the other night, driving thru town - a cop car. with no headlights on. 10pm a night, so quite dark. Dashboard and tail lights lit, but nothing on the front of the car. And I followed it, and over-took and had them follow me for about 5 mins, and no change. A fukin cop car with no headlights. Had that been anyone else, they'd be ordered to the nearest gas station to fix it or park up and walk home.. I would have taken the rego, but I couldn't see the front one, and the back one had had a sticker over the last 3 letters on the plate, then ripped off, leaving that white paper crap across it, so you couldn't see it anyway!!!!!!! wtf... But what can you do? Pull them over and bollock them?

Pull them over and politely point out that he's not fit to drive a nail, let alone a car. Or, make a formal complaint.

I'd love to see that. Signal them over and point it out - just be helpful... see how they get back to base. Can't drive it in that condition now could you

They were driving along Quay St. 2 blocks away is the downtown gargre. Why couldn't they have stopped there and asked them to fix the lights up? Shit like this just winds me up. Bit like the time I saw a cop reverse up the hard shoulder on the motorway, just to go up the sliproad he missed..
I've got nothing against cops, but for fuksake - it's one law/rule for all, and fukin do a job of enforcing it themselves.. what happened to 'lead by example'?

Pull them over all the time and give them a 'compliance' ticket to get it fixed ASAP (normally 7 days) and they don't have to pay for the ticket.
Use to just warn them but three weeks later you would see the same car/driver with the same headlight not working,
Now with a ticket putting pressure on them they DO fix it.
Who says warnings work???

FFS - how hard/expensive is it to get a new bulb? F'tards like this shouldn't be on the road. This is all just indicative of how many people don't take driving a vehicle seriously, and have little regard for their safety or that of others. I'd imagine too, that many of the vehicles that have a blown bulb have other defects too, like the one behind the wheel...

Yeah tell me about it - My Dad and I were trundling along in Avondale last Summer - a blue Commodore pulls out and passes us (we're doing the limit...)...
From my KB training I spot it's a mufti doing a quick blat to head back into the station. No lights or siren etc.
I vowed there ad then I'd opnt it out next time it happens... hence my interest in your situation

In some European countries you get a BIG fine for not having spare head light bulbs in the car.
