Lion have bought up Emersons

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/small-business/7911796/Lion-buys-Emersons-craft-brewery

I knew they had been wanting to take them over for a while - but sad to see it actually happen

Thank heaven we still have Tuatara, Epic and Stoke

Not buying that ever again. A shame, as they made some of the better stuff.

'cos they were the best

and maybe 'cos Lion didnt want to compete on the open market for Moa ?

Oh FFS. First I'm not allowed to be alone with my kids and now this. It's like they WANT us to move to Australia.

They are one of the best. I really enjoy a lot of the NZ boutique beers. My fave at the moment being Epic Hop Zombie.

Warning: Kirin (owners of Lion) have also bought 75% in the brewery that prodcues 'Little Creatures Pale Ale' - the only good beer brewred in Aussie

Epic Zythos. Whoar. And anything brewed by Renaissance. Or Galbraiths. Or Mikes. Or a whole batch of other kiwi craft brewers for that matter.

I Used to enjoy Macs Black until Lion took over. It changed the recipe( I think they started using sugar instead of extra malt, in the brewing process). anyway, it turned to shit.

I see that the McCashins family are back brewing fine ales again under the name Stoke, so all is not lost:yes:

So Lion have purchased a brewery producing beer that makes their existing labels taste like the swill that they are. They either operate Emersons as a fully independant entity (unlikely for long) or assimilate it into their collective like they have all the other independants Lion have 'absorbed' :weep:

With Lion's operating clout they could make Emersons compete pricewise against the imported UK ales that Emersons are so skillful in emulating, but more likely their beancounters will turn the operation into yet another hop flavoured water production facility  Time will tell.

That is my fear.... They've done it before and they will do it again. :(

It's no great loss, if you really like beer then you'd make it yourself. It's not difficult or expensive to do.

what's interesting? this bit?
Lion admits it expected reaction to its takeover of Dunedin craft brewer Emerson's insisting it ''won't homogenise and water it down''.
That being from a corp it only lasts until the next quarterly announcement if that long.

After reading the corp speak at the end

So had Lion watered down or homogenised Macs?

''No I don't think we did, no,'' Mr Phillips said, before adding that it was not possible to draw parallels between what Lion had done to Mac's

:bye: :bye: Emersons

I quite often partake of an Emersons and will continue to do so, at least until it changes. I am a bit biased but am also very suspicious of Lion. I am sure they will end up forcing a few corners to be cut. Luckily there is Epic, Tuatara, Yeastie Boys, 8 Wired etc etc. When the wife finally finds out how much a bottle of Hop Zombie costs in comparison to the cheap shit wine she buys I think I'll be in trouble, but it has made me think whether I should get some hops planted and start brewing commercially.

I suggest you look into doing some homebrew. The equipment can be purchased for around $150 new, or much less second hand. I'm always happy to help homebrewers so if you or anyone else is keen to get into it then send me a PM as I'm always keen to help others get into it. Fuck the tax Nazis.

The one good thing I suppose of it being available in more outlets is that a few more New Zealanders might find out what flavour is rather than drinking the mass produced shit that gets called beer in this country.

Ah well - one less brand to tempt me down at the Imported Beer shop.......
