Two of Suzuki’s non-Japanese operations have announced closures.
Their Spanish arm (Suzuki Motor Espana) is to terminate all their Spanish-based motorcycle production activity by the end of the first quarter of 2013. A press release stated this was due to the current state of the European economy. The Spanish production line mainly built smaller capacity machines such as the GZ125 and Burgman 125 and 200 scooters.
Suzuki’s US arm (American Suzuki Motor Corporation) has filed for ‘Chapter 11’ bankruptcy. This is a protective move, which gives a US company time to realign their business and potentially attract fresh backers without the risk of asset stripping.
The US branch has announced they will cease production of cars, but manufacturing motorcycles (plus ATVs and some marine vehicles) will continue.
