Hi All,

SORRY TO HAVE TO POSTPONE BUT I HAVE A MIGRAINE COMING ON :( IF YOU GUYS WANT TO DO THE RIDE WITHOUT ME YOU ARE WELCOME.

I haven't had much chance to see the North Island yet so thought I'd suggest a small day trip ride.

I apologise for my terrible maps etc - I'm having to work with a very ancient computer!

Leg 1:

Meet at Caltex in Otara for 9am to leave at 9.30.

Leg 3: (Still typing!)

For those of you more experienced/spirited riders, you can then go off and perhaps do the below route and go around the mountain - I've never done it before so don't blame me if it's terrible haha.

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&amp;source=s_d&amp;saddr=The+Shack,+19+Bow+Street ,+Raglan+3225&amp;daddr=-37.8877107,174.7689666+to:-37.9063426,174.8501232+to:State+Hwy%2FState+Highwa y+23&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FYA3v_0ddEpsCiGwwzqeQiQQMSkdn6w aF9QSbTGwwzqeQiQQMQ%3BFSLhvf0dRsNqCim_rCPF3ScTbTHA GpgGYe8AEw%3BFVqYvf0dSwBsCikpbmUMhSkTbTHASZgGYe8AE w%3BFU1Av_0dEp9wCg&amp;sll=-37.891112,174.875736&amp;sspn=0.099436,0.209084&amp;t=m&amp;gl =nz&amp;mra=dpe&amp;mrsp=2&amp;sz=13&amp;via=1,2&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=-37.849917,174.910583&amp;spn=0.379532,0.583649&amp;z=10&amp;ou tput=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&amp;source=embed&amp;saddr=The+Shack,+19+Bow+Stre et,+Raglan+3225&amp;daddr=-37.8877107,174.7689666+to:-37.9063426,174.8501232+to:State+Hwy%2FState+Highwa y+23&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FYA3v_0ddEpsCiGwwzqeQiQQMSkdn6w aF9QSbTGwwzqeQiQQMQ%3BFSLhvf0dRsNqCim_rCPF3ScTbTHA GpgGYe8AEw%3BFVqYvf0dSwBsCikpbmUMhSkTbTHASZgGYe8AE w%3BFU1Av_0dEp9wCg&amp;sll=-37.891112,174.875736&amp;sspn=0.099436,0.209084&amp;t=m&amp;gl =nz&amp;mra=dpe&amp;mrsp=2&amp;sz=13&amp;via=1,2&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=-37.849917,174.910583&amp;spn=0.379532,0.583649&amp;z=10" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

For those of us less experienced and wanting a little less breath holding moments, perhaps the easier route and head to Whatawhata on SH23.

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&amp;source=s_d&amp;saddr=The+Shack,+19+Bow+Street ,+Raglan+3225&amp;daddr=State+Hwy%2FState+Highway+23&amp;h l=en&amp;geocode=FYA3v_0ddEpsCiGwwzqeQiQQMSkdn6waF9QSb TGwwzqeQiQQMQ%3BFU1Av_0dEp9wCg&amp;sll=-37.849646,175.01152&amp;sspn=0.198984,0.418167&amp;t=m&amp;gl= nz&amp;mra=ls&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=-37.849917,175.012207&amp;spn=0.379532,0.583649&amp;z=10&amp;ou tput=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&amp;source=embed&amp;saddr=The+Shack,+19+Bow+Stre et,+Raglan+3225&amp;daddr=State+Hwy%2FState+Highway+23 &amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FYA3v_0ddEpsCiGwwzqeQiQQMSkdn6waF9Q SbTGwwzqeQiQQMQ%3BFU1Av_0dEp9wCg&amp;sll=-37.849646,175.01152&amp;sspn=0.198984,0.418167&amp;t=m&amp;gl= nz&amp;mra=ls&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=-37.849917,175.012207&amp;spn=0.379532,0.583649&amp;z=10" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

If the experienced riders want to meet there, I can try and look into a meet up point.

Leg 4:

Ride from Whatawhata to Firth of Thames via Lake Waikare.

More experienced option - ride back to Auckland via Kawakaka bay and clevedon:

This will be a leisurely learner friendly ride. So if you feel the need to speed off, please feel free but we will not be rushing to catch up with you. :scooter:

Please send me a message/post by end of Friday so I can get an idea of numbers and call ahead for lunch. Also, let me know if you would like to suggest any alternatives/good stop places. etc.

Dammit! The link won't even work for me any more! Stupid work internet filters. I'll have a play around again with it when I get home. I thought it would be so simple to embed a map - just copy and paste the link but noooooo.:oi-grr:

I'm definitely interested. Route doesn't really matter to me, being out riding with likeminded people is what it's about!
Can think about possible routes/places to stop between now and the 2nd Dec. I'll stay in touch via pm.

Sounds like fun. Ill see a bit closer to the time. Just got back from a rather lenghty ride around the Waikato. Some great hidden little roads all over.

Myself and one other is keen, how do you think he will do pace wise as he is on a cbr 125, but he is small so it can do a 100... aslong as its flat and there's no head wind haha.

So, stop at Waiuku at around 10:30am? Might be worth trying to meet you guys there. A good test of my distance riding :)

As long as he can keep up on the motorway I don't mind - I'm not planning on breaking any speed limits. I don't mind taking turns with some others to be TEC and stay back so he doesn't feel rushed or left behind. It will be a leisurely ride so he's welcome to come.

Leisurely pace for a friendly ride? I'm keen :scooter:

Definitely leisurely. We'll be as fast as our slowest rider, so as I've said above, I'm happy to be TEC (or take it in turns if other people want to help out) to make sure no one feels left behind. People can bomb on ahead if they want, but I quite like to take my time and enjoy the scenery.

I've heard Waiuku isn't the best place to stop as there isn't much there apart from the single cafe, so if anyone else has some other suggestions for our first stop, do let me know!

Avoid Waiuku entirely. And no riding the same road there and back for the most part. SH22 way is a very fun road.

SH22 way is a very fun road.

Yes it is indeedy, but I would add a provisio, it is known as the goat track for good reason, and you really need to aware of wandering stock. A great bit of road to treat with respect

Hi, I'd be keen to come along if OK (bearing in mind I don't know anybody), I'm looking to get more open road experience.

"Leisurely" is definitely my scene (I'm usually happy to pull over and let faster traffic go by), but I've been told by an instructor I should try to get my speed up a bit which hopefully comes with practice, only I haven't been doing much of that on my own.

Also my bike's retrospectively LAMs approved now, which is appropriate really, since I still feel like I've got plenty to learn...

I've done a few solo trips over the years but never any further than say Taupo (from Auckland).

Age-wise I'm oldish (40s), and to quote Abe Simpson "I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.."

(Actually I might never have been "with it" in the first place...)

That looks like a fun ride. Think of me when (if) you ride past the power station and see the giant bouncy castles at the 'family fun day' :)

Thanks for the tip and the compliment Mom! :) :innocent: glad you mentioned only the good things hehe.

Absolutely all are welcome! I just took part on a long ride with a great bunch of people and really found group riding is the way to improve your speed, especially around corners. Following more experienced people and trying to keep up with the helps you learn very quickly. I think there are a couple more experienced people coming (i'm still learning so wouldn't suggest following me haha, though speed is one thing I can do usually haha).

Awesome! I've not been on a bouncy castle in years!!! Arcane, we may be crashing :stoogie: (Just messing :P)

Please don't try to keep up... it's one of the biggest reasons for learners crashing. After all, experienced bikers screw up from time to time, and then you have zero chance of avoiding the same fate.

Ride your own ride, but see if an experienced biker can offer feedback to further your riding. (remembering that rider tips are like arseholes, everyone has their own)

Sorry probably phrased it badly. I didn't mean trying to tail gate, but just hanging back, watching how they go around corners and the like. I found it really put advice into action and helped me understand how to do it. But I only did it when I comfortable with my bike etc at the time and wasn't that nervous about doing it.

Completely agree that you need to have your own space and not stress yourself out.

Yes it does. However it is not a good idea.

On that ride, (for some sections anyway) I was going faster then most others. But I never exceeded a speed I was comfortable with. I left more then enough margin that I could lean over that extra bit when it became necessary. (Which it did on some of those tightening corners)
I will admit though that I was guilty of doing this on my first few on rides on my L plate. After a fairly regularly hitting corners which scared the bajezes out of me, I realized that, perhaps, I should slow it down a little.

While I am not an uber-experienced rider now, I definitely am more so then before. When Lanky and Maha were practically knee dragging on Twin Bridges the other week I ended up dropping back a fair bit, just because I was uncomfortable with the speeds they were doing.

A good road is a good road. Enjoy it at your own speed.

Please update the first post to indicate final route decision, meeting times and if you are going through Patumahoe and what time. If I go I'd like to meet you in Patumahoe. I just need a time.

No problem, I've done a few courses where they emphasise riding "at your own pace" and I'm down with that.

So long as I know where I'm going I'm happy to catch up to the group at the next stop.

Hey there, sorry I've been AWOL. It's been a crazy week and no internet at home! I will update the first post now with the route. I've never been to Hamilton - I'm mostly keen on visiting Raglan.

Hi all.

Okay I've finally updated the route on the first post and added in some detours for the faster riders. I've only posted stops to catch up for the first part of the ride up to lunch, then I figured we can sort out the other stops (if needed) at lunch.

Sorry about my shocking technical ability with maps!

Yep maps borked for me to. (Not that I can go, but can live vicariously!) Wow, that's turning into a big ride, though I guess cut up over a day should be do-able. 360kms, for the basic route? 480 for the extended one. So you are looking to be in Whatawhata around 1:45 - 2pm? I will keep that in mind just in case... though even rain didn't stop things much last year, so I think I am in for a full day away from the bike Sunday. :violin:

Hi guys sorry to do this to you but I'm going to have to cancel/postpone because I have a migraine coming on and it's not safe for me to ride when I get one :( feel free to go on the route without me.

No worries, looks like the bad weather is coming in a bit sooner than expected today anyway, so a "raincheck" is probably in order (not that riding in the rain isn't good experience...)

Also not sure how many takers there were?

Hope your migraine isn't too bad.
