View Full Version : So... I was in a crash

Lozza2442
12th November 2012, 08:45
Mental woman did a U Turn in front of me, I managed to slow down mostly, and swerve to land in the gutter.
I am fine, dropped the bike on my leg but walked away with just a couple scratches on my leg.
Was a very slow speed crash luckily.

So. Bike fell on its left side on my leg and the chain/gears etc.
The bike locked up in second gear (like I said, slow speed crash) for a bit, took me a while to get it out of gear.

Where to from here? I have her insurance details etc.
Are there any companies that do checks?

What do I need to check on my bike, I'm guessing I need to make sure my gears and chain are fine, what else?

TL : DR - I crashed, what should I check on my bike?
(Sorry for the rambling, still in shock/full of adrenaline/something)

Just realised I didn't add this, she did actually hit me, but not severely.

First thing to do is to calm down a little.
You dont have to do anything right now, you have the information you need.

Then pop it into a bike shop an they will give it the once over for you, sounds like it would just be cosmetic but they will check the gear selection and chain for you too.

Glad you all ok.

Call your insurance company and pass on the details they will tell youo top fill out a form and get to a bike shop for a cost on reapirs to you bike

First thing you do is post it on KB to get sympathy and attention.

Then you act like you're retarded and don't know what to do.

Then you make sure no thinks it's your fault.

Once you have achieved all of this. You call your insurance provider and make a fucking claim. If you are not insured, you call her insurer.

Didn't fall on my helmet/jacket/gloves etc so that should be sweet, boots/jeans are unscathed.

Basically I came to a full stop/going about 1km/hr and then she tapped me and I didn't have enough time to react and so I went over. The footpath where I went over was a lot higher than the road and the drain I landed in so the handlebar hit the footpath and took most of the brunt of it. If it hadn't I prob would have a broken ankle from the angle the bike hit me. I was rediculously lucky.

I'm in Takapuna near Barrys Point Rd. Will Cycletreads be the best place to go? I haven't had to take my bike to a shop for servicing etc yet...

I've had a cuppa tea now so feeling a lot calmer

So it's not so much a crash as an aggravated tip over?

Cycletreads is definately the closest to you. I haven't heard anything bad about them either so seems fine

The fact the woman is "mental" should work in your favour if it goes to court. But then again she might enter a plea of insanity.

Don't worry about it, man [edit: sorry, lady]. It's a GN125. If you still have a gear shift and clutch lever and they still work then you have nothing to be concerned about. Finish your cup of tea and carry on. This is why unfaired bikes are good to learn on.

Check your gear lever to make sure it's still straight. If bent inwards, it could hit against the engine cover and prevent the gear lever from doing its job, i.e. changing up.

Bend it back gently like Beckham if it has been bent...

Heh. Yep. It's got all of that still. This is why I was asking about what to check. Cause it's possible I wont have to go through all the insurance drama as no fairing damage, no gear damage etc. If it's under $500 damage (which it prob will be) she'll just pay for it herself as it's under her excess, and her car only had a small scratch.

She won't pay jack.

She undoubtedly fell over herself to apologise at the time, but I can assure you that within 48 hours, as far as she's concerned, it'll be all your fault and all you'll be able to do is attempt to take her and/or her insurance company to the Disputes Tribunal (the insurers won't give you the time of day otherwise, on account of her not actually filing a claim and/or her telling them that it was definitely all your fault).

Next time something like this happens, make the car driver stay put, call the cops, and get them to issue the driver a ticket or otherwise pronounce upon whose fault it was at the scene. Then you'll have something to back up the inevitable fight for compensation.

As it is - you're now stuck with a slightly scratched GN125. Learn to love it. Think of it as street cred. I don't think there's any point spending your own money on it if it still works.

And, trust me - if you don't have to claim on your own insurance, don't. Paying the excess is only part of the cost. Bike insurers keep a very close eye on how much we all crash. They have files on most people here. All your future motorcycle insurance will be affected by your crash history. If you can plausibly keep any given bin under wraps, do so.

For 12 months... If you're good after that, your premium goes back to normal. I hit a car in April or May and now the insurance company has raised my premium by $100. But if I do not have any more incidents in the next 12 months, they will bring the premium back down to before.

Good luck with this, last time I tried that I was told that as no one required an ambulance they couldn't be bothered (or they would get around to it when they were less busy).

Apart from that small point you are 100% correct in your post.

To the OP, insurance, go talk to them, they have more clout than you have and keep an eye on your ankle it's surprising how far you can go carrying an injury.... a couple of examples from my acquaintances (and we are all broken down old farts in our 50's & 60s): broke foot, got home after a weeks touring and got sent to hospital by wife; same ride, another person, broke collar bone, rode 1000kms off road adventure ride, rode home (500kms) got sent to hospital by wife, plated and stitched up collar bone.

Seems wives are sensible, who would have thought that?

If you have insurance, and you have witnesses to the fact you were not at fault, put a claim in. If the other party doesn't want to claim that's up to them, better your insurance company chasing them for the money than you having to do it.

A lot of waffle here.

It is quite simple actually:

If you have an accident that does not require ambulance and/or police do this:

1. Take the other driver/rider's details including their insurance company. (Please write them down your self from their license... and rego sticker on car...) Also get details from possible witnesses.
2. Contact your insurance company to inform them of the accident. They will send you a form to fill in with all the info they need re the accident.
3. Take the bike to a known bike shop that repairs bikes (preferably the same make as yours). Ask them to give you a quote on fixing the damage on the bike.
4. Return the filled in Insurance company form (with details of the other driver/rider incl. contact details). Also, if possible, add details of witnesses. And add a copy of the repair quote.

Now your insurance company will do what you pay them for, and if you have choosen well they will very soon contact you with the green light to have the bike fixed up at the expense of the other driver/rider (as his/her insurance company has agreed that it was in fact his/her fault). This should NOT affect your insurance in any way. If it does it is time to look for another one.

If your bike is put in a workshop to be repaired ask your Insurance company to get the other drivers/riders insurance company to pay for a courtesy vehicle. Worth a go... If not, then see if you can find a bike shop that has bikes they can lend you.

Good luck.

I didn't think the OP was particularly 'look at moi'. Just sounded like either a new and/or not-so-experienced rider asking what to do in the aftermath of her first bike crash. Without the benefit of other riders in the family to ask, I'd have probably done the same thing on here to get advice on what needed to be followed up on.
Each to their own I guess - some will offer sympathetic advice, others will be grumpy old pricks. (Pardon the cactus reference). It warms the cockles of me 'eart to know that women riders don't necessarily have to restrict themselves to Biker Angels in order to get tea-and-sympathy around here!

Yep, I was still using the wrist. It didn't move properly, but I just thought that was because it was bruised or something. I went and visited the doctor later on, got an x-ray, and ended up needing to have surgery to have pins inserted to hold it back together and a cast to imobilise it.

If the car driver is being charged ... make sure the police are aware you were injured. Causing an "Injury accident" is more serious than causing an "accident" ...

And for the purpose of possible ACC involvement/treatment/payment ... at a later (or sooner) stage.

Ouch!! :/

Update -
Claim has been accepted, damage to bike is (that I know of) - bent front fork, bent front wheel, bent handlebars, and need a new foot rest and some cosmetic scratches that I don't really care too much about. Going to get it looked over officially for the claim this weekend.
Got my ankle x-rayed, there's some bruising to the bone and tissue but no fracture or break or anything.

Thanks guys, like PrincessBandit said, I only came on here and posted like I did as I don't have any friends/family who ride bikes (except for Aph who hasn't crashed) so I wasn't aware if there was anything special, also I was in a bit of shock/pissed off. And now I know what to do in the future.
