gday not too sure where to put this but,
I'm thinking of doing a bit of riding down south before xmas... bike has a range of about 160km taking it easy, so will I ben able to do Hokitika-Haast-central Otago, and Arthurs Pass/Greymouth-Chch? Been a while since I've done it and can't remember if there are any fuel stops, cheers.

I have a bike with similar range
If you travel in daytime hours only and carry a small container for an emergency you might be OK
Nervous riding ahead for you:sweatdrop

It'll be tight for you in places. The long dead ends will be too far e.g. Westport to Karamea (no gas in Karamea) is about 90/100km each way.
Westport to Grey is another one of the long dry sections. Heading south from Grey you can fill up at Hokitika, then at Fox Glacier, where you will enjoy paying for the most expensive gas in NZ and enjoy the experience again at Haast Junction. From there to Hawera should be ok with a 160km tank range.
Milford Sound might be out of the question for you though. It's another dead end with no gas at MS.

As above, shouldn't be any problems if you're travelling during the day down the west coast.
From Greymouth to chch there is fuel at Arthurs Pass and at Springfield.
Haast to wanaka and north up the middle of the island is no problem.

160km taking it easy? Yeup, going to be a cruisy trip for you.
As MD said, dead ends like Karamea and Milford Sound are 100-120km one way, so not an option.
West Coast, you can fill at Hokitika, Franz Josef/Fox Glacier (both had gas last time I went through) and Haast (you'll be in a whole new world with that gas price).
Springs Junction can be touch and go at times, most times they have gas (not always 91 and 95) and occasionally they don't.
You're making your trip a whole lot more exciting! Basically, when out on the open road, I'd be filling at every gas station I see until I know I'm safe for the destination...

Last year I went around with a group and one of the guys rode a KTM Duke which hasn't got an overly large tank. He did miss out the longest leg though, which had all of us who did on reserve coming down off Arthurs pass toward Ch.
The Ducati Owners go round every couple of years or so and their bikes aren't all noted for tank range. I was pleased to have swapped my
S4R for the Triple prior to the trip.

We got gas in Karamea when we were there just after Easter

Gas in Ross, Harihari, Whataroa, Franz Josef (24 hour pump), Fox (24 hour too I think), Haast (24 hour card/cash reader pump), Makaroa, Hawea, Wanaka (24 hour pump)
In Karamea area ... Market Cross had a pump.

Yep ... I thought Hawera was a bit of a stretch on a bike with a 160 km range ... ;)

Is this also a good place to mention I'm annoyed when I only get 600-650km per tank? Best so far was about 750km I think...

I do well if I get 300 km's ...
But the only time it's bad to have a large (full) tank of petrol ... is when you are on fire.
or ... trying to pick the bugger up after it's fallen over ...

There are a surprising number of fuel pumps scattered around the south island. You don't need a town to have a fuel pump.
For example ... Ikamatua has a 24 hour card pump. With a roof over it.

Hawea

I threw in the R just so you Southlanders would get stuck rolling your RRRRRRs
The number of times I have shot passed Hawea township and I've never actually taken the time to have a look at the place. Is it worth a stop for a coffee break in Hawea. Trouble for poor Hawea is it's too close to Wanaka and WANAKA is the destination. I will be riding the south in a few weeks so maybe I'll take the time out to check out Hawea. Yeah, Hawea. Maybe Hawea is nice. I might like Hawea. Especially now I can spell Hawea without an R.

Milford Sound might be out of the question for you though. It's another dead end with no gas at MS.
There's pumps with 91 and diesel there. If the bike needs 95, do what I did and take a bottle of octane booster.
I did the SI with a tank range of 200km to fumes and it was slightly nervous in parts.
160km to fumes will actually stop you from going to certain parts of it unless you carry a can of gas with you.
Not a hell of a lot in HAWEA.
No way, I'd rather stay in Hawea than Wanaka. The campground is brilliant.
