I see in the news today that the Westland District Council is seriously talking about pushing through the often discussed Hollyford/Haast road. The first thing that this brought to mind was what a great weekend loop that would open up.
Invercargill - Riverton - Tuatapere - Manapouri - Te Anau - Milford - Haast - Hawea - Alexandra - Balclutha - Catlins - Invercargill.
All sorts of side trips too - Monowai, Hauroko, Crown Range etc etc.
I guess that there will be quite a bit of "Green" opposition, but personally I'd like to see it happen.
The budget mentioned was $220 million and so I am guessing that there are no plans to seal it even though the plan is to operate it as a toll road for 30 years.
Hmmmm......... maybe it's time to think seriously about that Triumph Explorer or (horrors) maybe even a GS

It's been talked about for years. Only the 20 km's of National Park north of existing road end (in the Hollyford valley) is going to cause "green" issues. There once was a bulldozed road from Big bay to Jackson bay ... but it's a bit overgrown at the moment.
Plenty of Greenstone in that area to bring out ... probably pay for the road even ...

This road makes much more sense for tourism into Milfor and Te Anau than a tunnel or monorail ever would. Queenstown businesses would hate the idea as it would give tourists an alternative route without the price gouging in Queenstown.

I was with you until you mentioned Tuatapere. The Sausage Capital Of New Zealand.
People rarely get past there, the pub is a gem.

Great idea, awesome wee ride up to the road end in behind jacksons bay, shame to see one of my favorite camping spots becoming crowded though.

Is that the road into Cascade/ Barn bay ?
The road will probably go ahead about the same time as the proposed road from Karamea to Golden Bay, which has been talked about for years, there's even plans for it somewhere.
It'd make a nice loop if it did happen :D
