Has anyone any experience with the Garmin Montana 600 (or 600T) GPS? It comes highly rated from reading ride reports on the Adventure Rider website, but was wondering if anyone in NZ has used it? I'm thinking of splashing out on one.
product description on the Garmin website is - http://gps-newzealand.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=47&product_id=197

I would dearly love to play with a Montana. But it falls into the same category as a GoPro Black Edition.
I've got an earlier model and it works fine.
Dammit :pinch:

I had a look at one the other day in the shop - I am trying to choose between the Montana and the Zumo.
I could have looked at the specs but I found the Montana bigger and heavier than I was expecting, so much so that I probably wouldn't use it for other backcountry stuff (tramping ski touring etc). The Montana comes with Garmins's tops installed but at 1:100000 these are arguably inferior to 'fresh map' NZ topos at 1:50k
The big Montana is $100 dearer than the big Zumo so the big Zumo with 'freshmap' topos($200) would be the dearest package by $100.
The Zumo UI is said to more friendly than the Montana for gloved fingers.
The Zumo/ motorcycle mount kit is available here whereas the Montana kit is not.
Shit sounds like I talked myself into Zumo for the Elefant !
Cheers

read this (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=688775)
They are not without their issues but its a fantastic resource there, and there is also this (http://garminmontanagpsr.wikispaces.com/) and this (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=790308)
Seems like they are a very sophiticated unit, much more than a gps, seems like you can have them set up to be many units in one.

Yep, profiles, same as the Oregon and 62csx series.

Thanks BMWST, those links are great. I had found the laying down tracks thread, but not the one specific to the Montana 600.

Colebatch is using a montana for his latest sibera ride.
When your planned ride looks like this, you probably want the best...

pete376403 - yes I'm reading Colebatch's ride report which is what peaked my interest in the Montana GPS.

Well, having shown interest in the Montana I went onto TradeMe to see what might on there and ended up buying a Strike Genius Motorcycle GPS - second hand but not old. Was much cheaper, will see how it performs.
