Wonder if his panniers and top box were empty...... nice skills.

Yep, clever, plus his ground clearance is now improved as is the overall weight of the bike!

I've seen a few of these gymkhana clips now but that was seriously impressive.

The thought had occurred to me that I'd need a lighter bike to try that but then I found a clip of a guy doing it on a Speed Triple.
That was probably just in case I was developing delusions of adequacy.

This vid came up as a suggestion when watching on you tube. Impressive as well.

Ok, in all honesty, how would one go about practicing something like this safely? Other than just finding an empty parking lot and trying not to fall over...

Sounds like a plan to me... what else would you suggest?

Where else? I'd rather do it in a parking lot than on the street anyway.. But you'll fall over for sure - do it in a parking lot close to a&e/hospital.. you'll thank me later.

You got it. Find an appropriate space & off you go. We use half tennis balls, easy to carry, to set up our courses & GP 8's. I've only fallen off once, just trying wayyyyyy to hard. I ran out of front tire.

Check out THIS (http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=788591&page=55) thread for vids, technique & discussion. Slowly but surely motogymkhana is getting noticed & it is an easy safe way to develop great control skills. The guy in the vid & a lot of the Japanese riders are the car park equivalent of aliens. I video a lot of my practice to see what I'm doing wrong & right. It feels epic to me riding but the videos are boring as hell. Useful for training, though.

Can't find it now but their is a vid of a guy two up on his Goldwing grinding his way around a course & I recently saw photos of somebody on a v-max having a go with a trailer in tow.

Do eet!!

ST's are amazingly nimble for a lard arse. Built in crash bars too. I rode an 1100 along a ditch once but shall say no more:facepalm:

Start by getting your bike set up, so you can reach the controls comfortably when at full lock.

Next, learn to ride slowly forwards, so that throttle/clutch/rear brake become intuitive

The do a series of turns ('8' and circles), developing the head turn - you need to be totally comfortable riding without ever looking at the controls, but looking where you want to go.

However, have a two-part plan ready for if it feels like it'll drop:
1. Apply power to lift the bike
2. Striaghten up

If you want to stop:
Straighten the bike upright
Go out of the turn at a tangent (look where you want to go)
When the bike's straight line and upright, then brake

Do NOT use the front brake when leant over unless you're really good, if you do you'll most likely panic and 'grab'

Take it in small doses, develop the skill gradually

Oh, and learn how to pick a bike up ;) But if you're careful, you shouldn't need to :)

I guess that eventually being able to to this in a carpark with practice IS possible.

:woohoo: It would take awhile to reach that level & quite a few offs but getting good rather than great is certainly achievable.
I've learned how to control the bike & use proper technique round a course & it feels great, totally changed how I ride. I'm now trying to do it quickly, timing myself round a course or GP 8's. It's really hard! Bloody frustrating at times, the fear of dropping the bike is hard to overcome. I've reached the point where I'm turning the bike on the front brake to get full lock & lean quickly, it scares the crap out of me!!

As posted above, practising the techniques is really low risk, at slow speeds without aggressive braking you just need the presence of mind to give the bike a whiff of throttle to stop it from falling, it doesn't matter if you run a little wide. Using both brakes with the throttle open to do a u-turn is a different kettle of fish and a black art.:Punk:

Holy crap, and even more impressive is that the rider looks like he'd be 25kg soaking wet!

The more usual fare. NSR's with wide bars seem to rule the roost. Listen to the brakes squealing while they are cranked over....
