My new laptop runs internet explorer 9, apparently. Have got a message saying I should upgrade to IE 10. Any avantage if I did so?

Fuck me. The only decent thing you can possible do with IE9 is download Chrome. Chrome is a vastly superior product on any score you care to mention.

I'm not going to get into an argument about which browser is best, but FFS, make sure you update to the latest version for the sake of security.

Chrome does that for you automatically. The browser version is something never to be worried about ever again.

(If IE did that, instead of suggesting it, people would cry "big brother evil Microsoft!!!!". Many people like to choose when to upgrade, e.g. so they can see what issues other people have had first.)
I'm liking IE10 - but note that some flash, in ads, like in the TradeMe message board, is crashing my display driver.

I've got Google Chrome installed, but never think to use it. Have never had any issues with IE9.
Is Chrome a completely separate browser to IE? If I persevered with Chrome, would I have to then log into my saved favourites and re save?

Tried Chrome but prefer Firefox. Just my personal preference

upgrade to firefox or opera. opera being my preference.
chrome is blow average.
firefox is adequate.
opera is badass
IE is $hit.
(srsly... memory usage is terrible.)

most browsers, when you install, will offer yo the option to import bookmarks, favorites, mail, contacts etc.
any saved passwords will need to be manually inputted and saved in new browser as that's privacy issues.
(chrome is more secure than ie, firefox more secure than chrome, about on par with opera. IE is poo.
opera is massively powerful software, includes mail client, IRC and widgets like a virtual aquarium. all the useful stuff)

+1. Chrome was great for a while, still use it for dev work as I love the debugging. For general browsing though I go no further than Firefox.

One of the many things I like about Chrome is the ability (when not completely shut out by a cast iron firewall) to log on as me, get all my bookmarks, passwords, customised settings and apps.
It's also fast, particularly on slow web sites.
And Adblock Plus is just fantastic. I'm currently contracting for a client whose firewall was invented by the Marquis de Sade. I can't even access my C: drive. IE8 is the corporate standard and, for the first time in years, I am assailed by advertising. That has been a massive culture shock I can tell you.
Chrome is also fantastic on mobile devices. I live in an Android world and Mrs H is an Apple girl. Chrome cares not a jot and treat us both splendidly irrespective of platform.
I got pissed off with Firefox when it stopped being Firefox and started being Chrome. Its developers obviously see the benefits in Mr Google's world and interface.

I just hope they don't lose the "IE like" configuration settings menus. The Chrome settings are horrible to deal with which is why I only use Firefox.

I usually lean towards firefox when I can be bothered. I might have to try Opera, sounds like it could be fun.
I have problems in the past with Chrome, even though I liked the idea of it, particularly with flash.
It might be a good idea to upgrade to IE10 particularly depending on what sites you go to. I have not had a problem with older browsers, but I am either safer with my browsing or more lucky? :innocent:
At my work we are also in the stone age. IE8 a corperate default. We do use a number of IE based applications that are not officially IE9 compatible. :eek5: I get to be one of the exceptions from the policy by being allowed to run IE9 (woo right? ). Small victories, working in IT.

The cult of fanboism has mushroomed with rise of the internets. It's just a browser. :dodge:
Upgrade now or give it a few weeks just in case you're worried about bugs in a new version. Or get chrome. Either way it doesn't really change your life.

My experience certainly has been that IE users get more viruses. That said, the demographic for IE users vs others is different, so possibly this plays a part...

Meh, the other browsers have vulnerabilities too. Search for them and you'll find much more recent than that Feb 2011 article. Here's one from October this year http://arstechnica.com/security/2012/10/google-chrome-exploit-fetches-pinkie-pie-60000-hacking-prize/
The only reason I'd suggest not using IE is because some shopping sites have algorithms that match the price to who they think you are. Usually the assume ie users are less IT savy and/or have higher incomes so they display a higher price. But that's nothing to do with the browsers capability.

that's a server side issue, largely caused by BKC input errors (or stupidity)
