Hi,
I'm new, so excuse my ignorance.
Will a broken Speedo Needle fail a WOF?
How would one go about fixing it?

I would say it probably would do.
I recently had to get my speedo for my Guzzi fixed. I used E Parrotts in Christchurch. They do an excellent job for a reasonable cost.

yes
way to get round it is go to cycle shop and buy a pushbike speedo the ones you can calibrate for wheel size that will give you a speed readout and thats all you need for a warrent, costs about 30 to 40 bucks

Are you sure it's not the speedo cable? Not sure if your model has one but if it has that'd be the first place I'd look.
If you wanna take your chances at the wof though, they may not even notice. Some testers don't even ride the bike.

It depends on where and how badly broken the needle is.

Thanks for the replys,
The needle isn't broken in the sense it doesn't give a reading.
It is literally snapped.
It looks like this:

It still functions accurately.

I had a similar problem in a Nissan van I owned and fixed it by glueing a piece of white card bent in a vee shape onto the existing needle stub.

Is the broken bit in there? You could easy get this fixed at in instrument repairer. Good op to paint the casing at the same time.

If you can either get the glass face off ... or get at the dial face, you could glue a new pointer on top of the broken one.
Speedo's must work to get a WoF ... nothing in legislation requires them to be accurate.
If you can convince the WoF tester that you can tell what speed you are going ... he may pass it.

Correct the speedo must work to pass a wof, as for accuracy ( here's the kicker ) if the wof agent does not think its accurate
he can require you to get a calibration test done. ( so don't glue a needle on top of the old one as it will be well out. )
options are send it off to be repaired or scource a replacement speedo and install it but you will have to take the old one
with you to the wof to get the milage corrected. ( not like your on RUC but hey )
third option replace your speedo with a aftermarket unit ( not some push bike unit ) as the speedo has to record milage as well as speed.
( ok nitpicking but ive been down this road with wof's and Cof's..

Ive passed a warrent with a pushbike unit as mileage recording function of the dial, as is this case, was working. Or maybe the tester was feeling sorry for me

Give these (http://www.redbaron.co.nz/about/gp-red-baron/) guys a call / send them an email and include your pic from above.
See what ideas they have.
If all you can get is a needle I could get it in there for you :)

Also you can try Autotech in whangarei with the same e.mail. Good luck.
The trick is, a, to get the case open without munting it and, b, getting the new needle on calibrating it correctly. Not impossible and doable yourself if you have some skills. Personally i,d get someone to do it for me.

E-mail that image to Parrotts in CHCH see if they can fix. They fixed a old Kawa one for me years back - you could not tell they had been in there.

Or ... E.mail all the bike wreckers that you can find ... and find the cheapest speedo you can. BUY it ... FIT it ...
DONE ...
Unbolt old one ... bolt in new one ... sorted.
Band-aid solutions are a temporary fix.

How did you do that? Did you go way past 280kph or did you reverse really fast?
If you did that in reverse, did you experience any time dilation?

You reckon they can do a tach? Mine are sealed units though, the glass has a chrome ring stamped and crimped over the glass onto the tach body.

I bought the bike like it.
It seemed to break in transit, although I wouldn't be surprised if the mileage was tampered with.

They did my Guzzi one. It's a chrome ring etc also and you can't even tell they got at it. Also, they repainted the needle for me as well.
Def recommend them !!

Yeah Parrot & Son on St Asaph st (still, presumably?), good work. Nothing I've had done by them has ever been what I would call 'cheap', but they do good work, I've never had to take anything back for a tweak.

.
Unless things have changed in the past couple of years, there are ZERO regulations around speedo accuracy. There is no set variance that a speedo must operate within no rules no regulations nothing, even for a brand new vehicle. DAMIHK. So I'm calling bullshit on a wof tetser being able to demand a calibration test.
As for the op ; The "needle" still moves? Its pointing at a number isn't it? I'd take it through for a wof as is, fuck em.

My Kawa speedo Parrots fixed was a sealed unit with the stainless ring - they did point out that it had to be removed and may not be perfect but when I collected it you could not tell they had had it apart.

I had an old XJ750 ... the speedo was about 20 km's out at 100 km/hr. The LTSA testing station guy told me as he stuck the new WoF label on ... the speedo was way out and I should get it verified how far out it was. (I already knew)
As far as regulations go ... speedo's must work. Period.
As far as legislation goes ... it is up to the vehicle operator to ensure they don't travel faster than the posted speed limit ... in the zone you are in.
