the last couple of dusty butts Ive struggled with luggage. Its a balance of having enough gear to be comfortabe and not too much to be a pain. A few guys had something like this https://www.adventuremoto.com.au/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=21&products_id=103 they looked like the ducks nuts.......any know where/if they are avaliable in NZ?

Get hold of caveweta, he'll make you something similar for a lot less coin. There's a thread somewhere that'll tell you all about them

don't quote me, but check out penguin and tatonka. elsewise someone like JHC should be able to make ya one.
or grab an old canvas sheet/tent, an eyelet tool, and a couple meters of startercord/boot laces. accommodation and storage in one.

Yep he was doing them for prob what we would pay for the materials. if I was doing something longer i'd get one off him. I only need ibuprofen for the dusty butt.

There is a fella up north who has been making Giant Loop type bags. I'm sure somebody will pipe up soon with some details. Doh - Jatz bet me too it - Caveweta it is.

Other option is Wolfman E-12's. I have slightly older E-10's (just a little bit smaller). https://www.adventuremoto.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=62_45&products_id=1564

Can pair this with a Wolfman Duffel or simply strap (tie) your own bag on to the loops that the E-12 has on top. https://www.adventuremoto.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=62_45&products_id=45

Done couple of dusty's with the E-10's now and they work bloody well. Stay in place really well and not a hint of wear on them even with a couple of oppsies. Much cheaper than the Giant Loop bags. 5 star rating from me.

Lastly I'd purchase direct from the Wolfman site. Generally slightly cheaper than the Advenure Moto site and shipping is about the same ($60 US from memory) and take about 8 days.

Cheers R

So does this mean you are not going to ask me to carry your jacket this year? With anticipation of the request I have put together a pricing plan and am happy to say I carry your gear at the rate of $2.50, per kg, per kilometer ;)

Well after freezing waiting at the top of the ski field road waiting for you to turn up with my jacket it dawned on me i need to be a big boy and fiend for myself.......With the ammount of luggage on ur DRZ you could replace your bike at the end of the Dusty with those rates.

Fabricate a piece of rectangle alloy plate and bolt it to your rear guard then bungy on a sports bag...easy!

How much stuff are you carrying? Last year I did the DB from Auckland with a tank bag and rear bag only, that was tools, spares and "enough" clothes to cope with the weather we experienced, total capacity about the size of two plastic shopping bags.
Those saddle type bags are the best for luggage carrying though, if you really need to take the kitchen sink........

What Crisis said.

How much shit do you really need? unless camping of course, but thats a different story.

This year I may be taking a few days to get their and may take a bit more, but will take only the bare essentials on the DB actual and so leave some stuff at Fairlie. The first one we had a support vehicle to take our gear. Brilliant.

With you on that one. Had enough of the dramas with sports bags sliding off. I had asked around but, not getting any alternative advice such as this thread has provided, bit the bullet and bought a genuine Giant Loop. The price is bad enough but the exchange rate, GST and Customs rorts make it uneconomical. They don't have a NZ distibutor but, when i had a grizzle, said they were attempting to get one.

I'm thinking along the same lines. Know a good place to leave gear in Fairlie? We had problems finding somewhere last time and ended up leaving a tyre stashed behind someone's vehicle.

I'm staying at the gladsone Friday and Sunday nights so they will oblige.

You do well to get your gear down to that size. I am a kitchen sink kind of fella, lots of fishing gear, cooking/camping/sleeping gear and an over-the-top amount of bike tools and spares. Carrying all that gear is hard work sometimes, lots of sweating in the rough stuff, but when you need/want something and you have it, life is good =)

With the DB1K, being able to leave all your excess gear in Fairlie and pick it up again on day 2 as you loop back is bloody great. Will be riding in a group that will be going at a fairly quick pace this year so going ultra minimal; stripping boxes etc off bike, taking only tools and basics/essentials plus a small backpack.

Following Ryan's lead ~ I purchased the E-12 bags from Wolfman....Will be giving them their first workout this weekend. Fit and finish look top notch, and as Ryan says, they stay put on the bike...

This year was a vast improvement over my first. I made a carrier which worked sweet and ment i could enjoy the ride instead of trying to keep my belongings on the bike. A giant loop style luggage system would be used for more than the dusty and i'm sure id survive without it.

So ya going to give it a nudge this year Josh? The first year i did it (2011) the group was a bit big and someone was always having a issue and we were over 30 hours. 2012, K14 and I just plodded along at a good pace and did it in just over 23, not bad when K14 had next to nil off road experience. This year i'll be riding with my Bro and his mate on big heavy pigs (BMW100GS and Cagiva Navigator) so i mite just get fed up with them and do my own thing :) i dont think the sub 24hr target will be met in 2013!

What's the belly protection like on the Navigator? Pictures of them look like it has a soft bit exposed where the rocks might get it (in stock trim).
Could be worth chasing that with a camera but I'll be busy elsewhere on the ride I'm sure.
Think there's a DL1000 in the rider list too. Hat's off to them all, armoured up Transalp is about as big n heavy as I will ever take (last DB), in fact I expect I'll be on the 250 from this one forward..

I'm using the E12' bags on the WR now thanks to Ryans input too.

I had a "look alike" giant loop bag made last year for the DB1K and used it very succesfully. I had a few mods made to it such as a little larger than the genuine one as well as the zipper run the total length of the bag and the total cost to have this made was $200.00. I have since then gone over to the Wolfman saddle bag arrangement so put the bag on Trademe a few weeks ago, oddly it took a couple of weeks to sell for $180.00. Cant seem to understand why people stuggled to pay $180 when some pay up to $600 for what is in my opinion an inferior product to the one that was proffesionally made here in NZ.
PS: The company who made mine is based in Auckland and is a profesional upholsterer. (unlike my less proffesional spelling)
