A good part of the hill is now 60 km so take care it's going to be easy to be well over this in parts. It is mainly the Southern side to well past Battle Hill.

There's a dopey looking fuck in a uniform in Kapiti. Bounces along on his toes with his hat pulled down pushing his ears out.
Jeesus, what a fine specimin. Told me my warrant had run out, I suggested he read it again, it wasn't.
Since found out he's a known drongo.Lycra would suit him.

60 ks ??!! that'll work.

Thats a good description of quite a few I know. May have to encourage as many 'drongos' as we can to partake in a lycra. Then it would be 'let the games begin' Maybe called the 'Pie/cock drongo run'

Went through Sunday morning. Few 60 signs from battle hill south but everything much the same. What a beaut morning it was too, can't say it has altered the way I travel.
Pick your time of day and keep your eyes open, you'll be fine.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/149541-Paekakariki-Hill-Rd-speed-limit-will-be-reduced-to-60km-h

been discussed already. This is the result of no-one giving a s...t. You've been shafted.......again. Common sense gone out the window. Bring on the camper vans. The 60km/hr limit signs will go from Pauatahanui right to close to the summit (PCC boundary). Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I think people give a shit and many made submissions but that does not mean you will be listened to. This decision was made long ago - time since then has just been 'process'....

la buona
27th November 2012, 12:23
Yep, the outcome was predetermined and I don't know how many made submissions. The rationale (to reduce the speed limit) was shonky in my view from the outset. A limit of 70-80km/hr was pretty reasonable for this stretch taking into account road conditions, corner speed advisory signage etc etc.. Don't forget it had already been dropped from 100km/hr a few years back.

But a lot of people are going to get a wake up call once it is policed: and believe me it will be policed heavily after an initial grace period.

Given the traffic it carries, the increase in urban ruralites and the accident rate it was a no brainer.... I should be able to tear over there flat out on the AC50 soon... CHOICE!

Truly?

Ruralities?

Well I'll be fookt.

Urban Ruralites.... Its the 'lite' version of proper rural people.

The two biggest sub tribes are the Horse Owning Classes and Llama Botherers (ie all breeders of 'exotics fall into this class). Generally these are people from town that move to 'The Country' or at least as much of the country that isnt more than 15mins from a dairy...

Not properly classed as ruralites...

More likely to be a sub tribe of boganus shedus

If you're driving a Landy I'll be surprised you can keep the bugger just straddling the centerline. Took me years to get used to their steering.

Shot through their yesterday in the work ute and I firmly believe the 60kph speed limit will cause more crashes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,from complete bloody boredom! Thing is, the crashes on Greys Rd and Paekakariki Hill weren't caused by people doing the existing speed limit anyway. Most were kicking along far faster.

Gonna be 20 mins to the dairy now at 60 km/hr. Pies will be cold by the time you get home. No wonder so many "For Sale" signs on the road now.

So tell me this 60 speed limit isn’t revenue gathering?

Went for a drive along the road today with the wife and kids. Before we even got the battle hill we had passed 5 popo cars. Two “hidden” cars and 3 patrolling to see who they could catch out.

On the return trip passed the two still in the same place and 2 on the move.. one heading toward us and one turning on the Greys Road….

What’s it been 2 months since the speed change and they are out in force to get what money they can??

Used to be my favourite bit of road for a wee scratch. When Jimbo had a spill on it we were hanging round for an hour or so waiting for a van to collect his bike and I watched as nearly every single vehicle crossed the centre line on the corner we were at. Blind right hander, wheels a foot or two over the centre line.

I very rarely go over there now.

It will only be a matter of time before the Taka's is limited to 70kph.

I went for a spin over there on the old Trophy last weekend. 60kph is crazy slow on that road for the Triumph. I damn near fell off at every bend trying to get around them slow enough... I kind of though 70 was ok (ish) but 60 on the Pauatahanui side is nuts. I followed some kind of gigantic 4WD sailing vessel that seemed to be able to tack around the bends adequately at 60kph with out much effort (although he nearl put it in the ditch on the straight bit)..

Even in one of my much used 'swiss army knife' toyota wagons its very slow at 60kph.

On the bright side - I may have been bowling a long a little briskly at one point and was flashed and reminded by the constable that this was not to be tolerated with a waggly finger... Very decent of him to keep me safe without financial penalty...

The latest is that there will be no right hand turn in to/on to the Peakak Hill rd from SH1 end. This to stop the incidents that supposedly happen at the intersection. You will also not be allowed to come down the hill and proceed straight through to the village and thence make a turn to head up towards Paraparaumu. I think most will do U turn at some point a few metres either side of the intersection on SH1 which will be even more dangerous as most people who use the road will be aware that traffic from the hill will be at the intersection , not doing bloody U turns on the highway.

Me too. Only not on your old Trophy. And yes, it's very very slow.

Been in the pipeline for a while. If the demographic in Paekakariki was a little less blue collar/blue rinse there'd be a bridge over the "motorway". As it is we can't afford it.

Drove over it last week saw every single new speed sign and was like wtf my gps still says its a 100km road and due to the fact ive just cleared all my fines and think ive grown up alittle I didnt go much over the speed limit :s

Used to go max of 100km down there when it was 80km limit best part was seeing how fast you could get the car round the corners while staying in your lane and still being under the speed limit :p

Fastest time over the last time I drove it (closed road) was 8 and a half mins

Tbh its not the speed limit that will stop people and the accidents are from people not driving correctly

Have you considered a career in driving, you should ?
In I think, The Heatway Rally of the 70s ?
Andrew Cowen (a pom world rally driver) did the hill in
13 mins in Works Mini Cooper S.

Anyway back on topic, 60 kmh is just stupidly slow. I wonder how these clever people came by that figure ? Probably by throwing darts at a lot of numbers on a board.

I remember watching rallying on that road in the 70's as a young kid. It was mostly gravel wasn't it?

Bottom of Paekak side to the summit can be done in about 2 minutes from memory (nowadays).

I can't recall any gravel Deano and I must have 20 odd years on you ?
I always thought Cowen seemed slow for what he was in.
As a young fella in a Ford Anglia 105E I used to slide my way over there, all at very slow speed compared to todays cars.

ps How are those pushups coming along ?

Yeah I rode it last week and the pace is ridiculously slow. Trouble is the Old Bill will catch us out.

Going through that lovely esses section and coming at me, half on my side was a white 4x4. Of course I had to take evasive action, not him. No he's a 4x4 owner which seems to give them an exemption from road courtesy and care for others safety.

No matter how bloodly slow SUV/4x4 go they still can't stay on their side of the centreline. What is that about? As said by others above, the reduction has made no difference to peoples piss poor driving habits.

Make it 20kph and still some idiots will find a way to crash.

Roadworks start at the Paekak intersection after 5 jan and you wont be able to do a right hand turn anymore at the bottom of the hill on that side. You will have to do a left turn and then right turn closer towards fisherman's table to head north

I went over there last week on a beautiful Thursday... I have to agree with some of the previous posts - 60km/h does NOT stop the wankers driving crapped out trash-mobiles on the wrong side of the road (or THEIR speed either)...
thankfully saw no coppers though... will watch that space!:eek5:

Not too bad on the push ups....I think I have got over a hurdle there! lol

I'll have to ask my dad. I'm sure it was Paekakariki but could be mistaken....I think I was only about 5-7 years old. I.e. 36-34 years ago.

They are creating a merging lane on the south of the intersection to make it easier to get across.
