Hey, yesterday my engine blew up at Taupo on my SV650.

It's a Pro Twin that I am trying to get prepared to do Nationals. So, where do I go or who do I talk to about getting a reliable SV650 engine? I don't just want to buy a random engine off a random person only do have trouble with it. Any help appreciated.

I googled replacement engine GT650 Hyosung and found a place in Aussie that sells brand new engines less carbs magneto cover and engine sprocket for $995 australian. Maybe go Hyosung:second:

Question.
How many Kms has your bike done! Do you now have a hole in the cases just behind the starter motor!

55,000kms. Wow it's like you have seen this happen before....... yes there is a hole right behind the starter motor.

The SV has a genetically weak crank and the heavy flywheel doesnt help. 99% of the time the rod will exit behind the starter.
As i have siad before in my opinion a FRESH SV motor is good for three seasons hard racing before you are sitting on a hand grenade. that is probebly only 5/6000k between full rebuids on a standerd motor.
so at 55000k you are pushing the bounderys even though most of the kms were at road pace.
In my opinion if you want to go Protwin racing get a VERY low km motor from the states and use that. If you want to go Superlite/f3 then talk to glen williams.
I have spoken to a few SV tuners and they all say the same....... STD CRANK will go BANG eventually in a race bike.

Fuck man 55000ks!! Im hardly surprised...
Ill keep an eye out. Hamish is a bloody good rider and possibly a title contender it would be a shame if he missed out on the nationals

Thanks for the help and advice everyone. I have a few options on eBay that I am trying hard to chase up. Won't be cheap though. Thank you for suggesting that engine Buddha, however I need the 2003 - 2012 engine which is different to the older versions.
I had no idea the engine was capable of going bang like that or I would have done something about it before I even rode the damn thing.

from 2008 onward i believe is a twin plug head too( mines a 09 andf its twin plug). The 2005/6 single plug head make the best power.... but finding a low KM that old might be tricky.

...these problems are easily avoided...just buy from the honda company in the first place...

Wow I had no idea there was a difference but you're right. That's annoying. Thank you for pointing that out.

2007 was the first of the twin plug heads,But Neils right of course,Avoid the problem at the start and buy a Honda

Yip crank flywheel weight & the fact that the main bearing shells move sideways at an alarming rate doesnt help. The 03 onward bikes were an interestiing motor, (particularily the 03/04/ & some 05 engines) , they gave the engine an extra 750-1000rpm when they injected it, - but also they waisted out the little end of the conrod at the same time............
Typically front rod snaps just below little end & proceeds to saw engine in half.
Usually the only thing salvageble is clutch & if you are lucky the heads + a few other outside bits.
If buying an injected get the 05/06/07 single plug type.
Mods to gain reliabilty are limited within Pro-Twins, but a close inspection of rods for any faults or replace with new when building up a 2nd hand motor is worth the money IMO.
PM me for any further info.

Would be great to see how reliable a Honda Bros is with double its original hp to match a Sv...........

Looks like I will be sitting on a hand grenade for the Nationals - might have to cover the clutch like a two stroker LOL

So what does a set of rods cost if this is the main issue/consumable part?

I have been chasing up a few engines on eBay but they aren't looking cheap, that's for sure. They also might not get here in time. I'd really like to ride the bike at least once or twice more before racing Nationals. I've hardly ridden the damn thing and I still don't know how to race it on wets yet.
I almost never hit the rev limiter, I didn't want to unnecessarily thrash the engine and it doesn't make great power near the red line anyway. Since I have owned it (which isn't long) it was treated very well with new oil and new oil filter often (once after every 2 weekends riding).

could u maybe hook up a crank and some pedals to the front sprocket n pedal it around urself?

Haha - the only time it hits the redline is if I miss a gear.....and my heart stops for a second or two waiting for the BANG or rattling to start.
I'm actually revving it less now than when I first got it. Better to ride the torque instead.

I wouldn't worry about time on the bike Hamish - you're fast as fuck anyway from all the bucket racing.
I can see where you problem was now - you changed the bloody oil too often.

The problem with a second hand engine is you will really need to have it checked out anyway.....more $$$, don't ya love it?
And pro twins is one of the cheaper classes really.

Hey Merv - nice shot bro!
Is anyone racing your SV during the Nats or can I have first dibs for leasing it if mine does go bang? :niceone:

No one racing it...if its back together im sure the owner (not me by the way) would consider leasing.. i will run it by him.

Out of curiosity I had a look at the pro twin regs. I see no reason why the unmodified rods and unmodified crank can't be shot - peened.
Rods on the beam and presumably around the small ends - crank in the radius at the ends of the big end pin.
this alone should extend engine life. Clearancing properly is a given of course.
I don't know of course how much work is being done on these motors now but as usual, a class of "unmodified" motors is asking for trouble IMO.

Sorry to hear about your SV Hamish.
I had the same thing happen to mine and got another one from Ebay for a little over $3k NZD all up including shipping, GST, etc. I can't quite remember how long it took but I think it was about 3 weeks so you would need to act fast if you want it for the nats.
I ended up getting an 05 for my 06 SV from 'dietzracing' on Ebay (not sure if they have any now, no ebay at work). I think most of those guys on there are pretty straight up as thier income depends on good feedback.
Once the engine arrived, it worked flawlessly and I didn't need to re-tune it or anything so you should just be able to bolt it in and ride.
Ideally, someone would see that you have talent and offer a bike or at least an engine!

yep I managed to get my ER650 eng over including loom and airbox etc for $1700nz....but i was stung on the first eng...I.e took my money and ran. Bank came to the party and covered me under credit card fraud which is was. Time will be your big problem. if you can get someone who is moving a container over from USA then you MAY get it here....... My 450 was fully rebuilt overnight in timaru in 8 hours, as in crank out....anything is possible.

Cheers guys. Yeah I have chased up quite a number of engines now. I don't think I'm going to be getting an engine before the South Island rounds. Really disappointed. My Mum has an SV650, although it's the 2009 model which means twin spark plug head. Is this going to be a major issue? Will it really be much slower? Also, it has done a fair number of Kms too. Around 30,000 I think. If anybody knows anyone that would be okay to loan me an engine or anything like that, please let me know!!

Nah, the twin pluggy is fine mate - just swap fairings etc over as Chops said, as the airbox / injectors are different on the later models.

This years Nationals saw nothing between the pro twin bikes which was great. It was all down to rider skill basically. I doubt there's much difference power wise between truly stock SV's so grab your old lady's and come have some fun bro!
