So my next door neighbor experienced the wrath of the mighty ZX... now she wants a bike of her own.

So even with all the changes in licenses etc I advised her to get a cheap, naked, 250cc.

She's not keen on riding naked (shame hehe) and has been looking at GPX250's and ZZR250's - can anyone think of something that would be suitable?

She likes the riding position of sportbikes, dislikes naked bikes and is a little 'larger' than a 50kg stick figure (scorpio 250 is a 'one butt cheek' bike for example).

She is an excellent pillion - she was on the back of my ZX11 from Blenheim to Auckland in one hit, after never being on a bike before. I barely knew she was there - in fact a couple of times I even had to check.

two fiddy I4s tend to get raped. and they need to be, to go anywhere fast on them.
and there's the old saying about fat chicks and scooters... dont ride them. (or something like that)

so:
hyobag 650. (or nearest on the LAMS list)
zz/zxr /fx/fzr kind of 400s

+frame sliders.

Remember LAMS is now in effect, so she isn't just restricted to a 250...

I liked my ZZR250 quite a lot. Buzzy fuckin thing though.

There's quite a few GS500s around that are fully faired (and look quite good to boot). They're not cheap though. ZZR 400s are LAMS complaint, but they're getting quite long in the tooth and most of em are ragged pretty hard.

Cheap faired sportsbike and LAMS complaint are somewhat mutually exclusive. Shit finding a LAMS bike that's cheap is a mission full stop.

Probably better to think of getting a cheap 250 ... (with or without clothes) that would last untill she's on her Restricted license. Then she would have a better idea what she would like ... with time to look around and find a good (bigger) one ...

Remind her naked bikes are cheaper to fix/replace bits ... than faired bikes if you hit something (like the ground)

Tell her to get a Scorpio, and a bag of Salad.

I started out on a Scorpio myself at the start of the year (120kg). It hauled me around pretty well, even able to pass on the open road. Open road it would be sitting at 7500 rpm (a couple of k short of redline).

It was a fine bike for learning - easy to handle and forgiving. Once I found out I would be another 18 months on it I had to trade up though.

As was mentioned it's a hard road finding the perfect LAMS bike, and when you are new to riding a single test ride (even a good 30min one) won't tell you everything. It's all a learning process.

THe Sv 400/650's are worth a wee look, nice and easy but with a little extra fun. I loved my sv400

says wants a 250 with cloths so why all these suggestions for everything else!
Kawasaki Ninja 250 is sweet and real long lasting little single, agile, capable, and looks damn good in black - looks like way more than little single. Know of one lady who kept it even after full permission granted - put a better pipe on though! Corners and stops well and that is where fun is these days.

Thanks for the advice - seems the LAM's list opens things up a bit.

ZZR400 - not too quick but enough grunt that your not wringing it's neck the whole time.
GPX250 - very fond of these and good learner bikes.
Scorpio - too small, too thin and 'look' too much like a dirt bike to her.

If anyone has a bike for sale 250-400cc (dont want anything too big ie 600cc or silly ie VFR250, 2-stroke etc). Must be fully faired (ie not zeal) and be more than happy sitting on mway and easy to maintain.

Already she has written off "all hondas" as they "look gay" (woah sportsbike biker already!) and dislikes Hyusungs (or whatever the flob they are called) as she wants to actually spend time riding it rather than picking bits that fall off all the time.

Keeps asking to learn to ride on my ZX1100 - so she needs a bike quick please ! ! ! !

ZZR250 is okay for a learner, so are GPZ/X. GS500F are good
She could get an RF400, also not bad
A decent ZZR400 (N model, 1993 onward are the bestest, K models aren't too shabby though) would be good, but a bit heavy for a leaner (195kg dry)

The ZZR/GPX are far better value than the newer shitheap EX250 as they perform just as well (the GPX is actually better) and the "extra running costs of the older bike" don't justify buying newer.

That is, essentially, a "short list" of the range of chioces she has based on her ridiculous criteria. That's not an example of the best of everything or even good choices, just the range of bikes she has to choose from. You guys can take it from there.

She is doing herself a disservice by writing off all hondas based on some absurd assumption. Particularly since theres a smattering of Hornets going for really good pricing at the moment, and they would be perfect for what she wants.

My pick of the lot would be a GS500 if she has the dosh to spare.

You're right! Hence the 2 pipes!

and i thought no one was more pedantic than me...

Though - true story. Guy here at work bought Honda GB250 jap import - small engined version of the lovely GB400/500. Fancies himself as knowing about cars and bikes, though to be fair got it mostly for son. Insisted it was a twin. Rather stroppy when I insisted a single...scoff scoff he goes. Eventually said he would prove it so bought it in. It is a single. Blush whoops...

The only way she will find a bike she truly likes is for her to try before she buys.
Get her to look through as many bike magazines as possible and get her to make a list of the one's she likes, then head off to the bike shop and test ride until she finds the best fit for her. Sometimes the bike shop guys can advise her of things she hasn't thought of as well.

No-one can tell her what she will or wont like - she's a female remember....and it's totally a personal thing.

Either that or give her your bike then get a new one yourself - solved. :msn-wink:

Suzuki Gsx250 2000+ im riding a 02 one atm good learner bike pulls well

only issue I have is I am a stick 70kg and I get blown around a fair bit in the wind :(

should be able to pick a dropped one up for around $1800 (crack in fearing/dent in tank) or a mint one for 3.5k

a dropped bike would be ok for a learner as I bet she will drop it at least once and then its not as heart breaking as dropping an immactulate bike

I really like my ZZR400. Sure it's a bit heavy but it handles really well. It was cheap and hasn't cost me more than a new reg/rectifier plus cush drive, chain and sprockets and the usual tyres, oil etc.

Also I'm not here for part of the year so I don't care if it sits in the garage for that time. It has never let me down nor did my other one for that matter.

Ratti and Bald Eagle ARE a very nice KB couple. And we both have bikes...and they are both black. But Ratti's is bigger than BE's, and older and tattier. His is shiny, until I lead him up back roads that turn into tracks....

seriously, the most common bikes I see at the SlowPaced rides I run are scorpios. Bit narrow in the seat for a generous butt, I would have thought, but I do know a 6'2 woman who learned to ride on one ( she now has Hornet ) and now her Hubby is learning to ride the scorp.
