Weta put on a special viewing for staff at the embassy last Friday. Staff got two tickets, and I was My sons +1 :woohoo:

We got the best seats in the theatre and what a awesome piece of work it is. The 48 frames makes the 3D soooo much smoother and easier to watch! Without ruining the movie I can honestly say it is a master piece, a real step up from the lord of the rings in just about every facet of the film. Wow, just wow!!!

Funny part for me was at the end when the credits rolled, nobody left their seats waiting to read their name! It was a lot of fun as they all whistled clapped and hollared each other! Was a real proud dad moment for me to see my sons name rolling up the screen. Weta already have him on contract to all of 2013 working on the next one

We stayed here until around 4.45...then got sick of everyone using the shop as a way to get from one side of Courtenay Place to the other!

Cool. Excellent.

But ...

Without ruining the movie ...

Read the book ... know what happens ... impossible to "ruin" the movie ...

Yeh there was about 9 of them, but they decided that was just silly so they made it into a trilogy and just played a couple at a time; the last was must have been at least four movies long.

Ha ha ha,,I still haven't seen "Star Wars" so LOR or The Hobbit probably won't be on my short list any day soon either.

When I came out of the Cinema after seeing the first LOR, I noticed all the Xmas decorations in the shops ajoining the cinema and mentioned to the Bride that I had forgotten it was Xmas for a while there, she said much the same.

I reckon that's all you can ask from a film, escapism and entertainment. For a while there I had gone to middle Earth and I hope the Hobbit takes me back there.

You're even stranger & more unusual.

I went to a couple of Cast & Crew screenings of LOTR back in the day. I think it was the third film when I was sitting front row, right next to Dan Hennah who prior to the screening made a little speech to the effect that he was yet to see the film in its finished form. I still have the personalised invitations somewhere.

Best thing in my mind about the LOTR & Hobbit films is the fact that just about every second Wellingtonian has a story to tell of their involvement or experience with the making of them. That's pretty cool IMO.

I'll never forget the story I was told by a Weta staffer about the day he was in Kilbirnie Pak N Save buying their entire stock of KY Jelly & Baby wipes (they used KY as fake lava on Mt Doom & the Baby Wipes were for... wiping). He was at the checkout with a trolley full of the stuff when apparently a purple-haired old lady asked him whilst peering into his trolley "My, that's a lot of KY & Baby Wipes" to which he replied "Yes, we're making a movie". Priceless.

Not my cup of tea but I bet you were proud.

Next time you're down, drop us a bell. Be good to share a quiet one after all the years that have passed.

Oh I don't know. I was tempted to see Lord of the Rings until I realised I was more than 11 years old. Harry Potter, the Hobbit, it is all the same. I just don't get it.

Although I read the book a long time ago, I'm quite sure it explained how Golum got the ring in the 1st place, the movie seems in a different order, though I may be wrong.

Yeah mate, pm me your number, and we will make it happen. I gget down that way quite often.

Here is his reel, 8 months out of date now though, but gives you an idea. He really likes modeling, but for the Hobbit, was working in the "Shots" department on lighting n that.

Priceless.

I also missed out on playing marbles, skateboards, disco and most of other popular trend type things.

No idea why as I also never had any issues with any of those things.

Just march to my own tune and always have.

The little I have seen of LOTR ect I do see why their very popular but while other people are watching it I'll be fishing, hunting, riding my bikes, beach combing with my dogs in the search for ambergris,,or going to work.

I like to see myself as a doer of things that result in a physical or financial return and have an outdoors component.

So where other people are watching things,,I'm doing them or I have an interest based on having done them.

I also live on a pretty restrictive budget so the $50 it would cost me to go into the city and watch a movie would also allow me to drive over to the Firth of Thames with my Kayak on my ute an catch enough fish to last my family a week.

So you see I'm not really that strange,,,just constantly broke :)

Yeah .. I read the books again about every 10 years or so .. I watched the first LOTR movie thinking "brilliant movie - well done. It captures the whole Tolkein thing. Why don't I enjoy it as much as I know I should?"

And then I worked out - it was a brillaint movie, extremely well done - but I knew what was going to happen the whole way - no surprises in the story, I knew the plot, I knew the lot ...

I've never seen the second two LOTR movies -I am sure they are brilliant ... tho' I might just go and see The Hobbitt.

I thought it was the Silmarilion that told the story of Gollum....but hey im getting older too.
Man , in that book & the Book of Lost Tales you have a history as complex & as deep as the Bible, & way cooler stories....A way better creation myth.

Legions of Tolkien fans would not have allowed Jackson to change anything - it had to follow the book. They grizzled about the stuff he left out, imagine what it would have been like if he added stuff that wasn't in the books

Long time ago I read The Worm Ouroboros , not long after having read The Silmarillion.

I thought "s'not bad, but he's clearly ripped most of it from Tolkien".

Then I checked the dates.

Hey, thanks, I'm a fan of old-ish fantasy (Lord Dusany, etc.) but I never heard of that one before. Just downloaded it on my Kindle.

KiwiBiker, come for the bikes, stay for the literary discussion.

He did add a couple of scenes that are not in the book - especially between Aragon and Arwen Evenstar ... didn't add anything to the plot and helped to carry the plot in a movie way rather than a book way - but they were still additions.
