Ok so catch cans. We all need them. Now most of us build a bike, get to the end and go shit need a catch can and dig something out of bin in the corner of the shed, stab a few holes in it and away we go. I am not an innocent party and have done this, several time, I think the first one was a Charlies Juice container I had just finished, I think that got cut off at some stage and replace with a brake fluid bottle, which I think was replace with a drink can at the track one day for some reason.

Well after blew a shit load of oil all over the track at the GP a few years ago when my breather hose come out (Taupo Back track, not the TRRS the year before when someone melted there starter motor bung in practise) I have been on the look out for good cheap cans that are just a bit better than I have been using. I am not even sure what is on the bike at the moment.

Well today while filling up with gas I spied this

710ml V with a screw cap that is re-sealable. My idea is to drill some holes in the top, or alternatively just leave the top open with the hole in the top that doesn't have super sharp aluminium edges that jump out and bite you.

They reckon they are only her for a limited time (what ever that means). I picked up one tonight form Countdown for about $4.00.

Worst part is the volume if V inside that I feel duty bound to consume, even though I am not a fan.

Looks pretty feasible, I think over the years we have had drink bottles and fizzy cans gracing (or disgracing) our bikes. Maybe "V" can flick some sponsorship to us for advertising there goods! :niceone:

...i found a cool container once that graced the back of my T20 motor...it had contained a liquid cleaner for vinyl records...it was called Track Clean...very fitting I thought...

i once found a supplier of Chinese made spun alloy cans for spray guns...from memory about $5 each. Looked great and polished up well.

Put them on everything I built for about a year then the supply ran out.....

I saw an interesting one going through scrutineering at Hampton last weekend. It was a plastic coke bottle cable tied to the frame. However, the cable ties didn't go around the bottle, they went through it. The bottom set of holes was only about 20mm from the bottom which I would have thought defeated the purpose. How much are they supposed to hold?

MNZ does not say how much it has to hold .... Just the following :

10.13
For sealed surface competition, all crank cases, gear box, oil drain and breather
tubes open only into a catch tank, i.e. a plastic bottle or suitable container to
catch oil and oil mists. Air cleaner drain lines will enter a catch bottle and be
sealed. Drain plugs and oil filter retaining bolts will be wired. Spin-on cartridge
type oil filters must be secured by a hose clip.

Slightly off track but in a similar direction ie slippery stuff on the track, I heard there is a new rule that says disk valve motor carbs must now be covered. True or not???

Not sure if it is a local track thing or summat else. If it is true though I would have a hard time complying unless the officials involved could prove that there was an issue specific to the disk motors dumping more on the track than other bikes.

Yea, when I first read the rule book a wondered how old that rule was and what the hell happened to result in someone dreaming it up.

After a few MT Welly wet meets recently there was a bit of oil seen on the track, and some of the 4 stroke boys started pointing the finger at the strokers, a bit rich really, all things considered but hard to argue with considering our oil rich carb blowback into open air.

There is no new rule or whatever, just a push by the organizers for the strokers to clean up their act. And if you come in with with the back of the engine or your right hand boot all wet with 2-stroke oil, what are you going to say ... "Its Not Me" ... that should work ... not ... well it didn't work for me anyway ... :laugh: so there you have it

Good point about the BOB.

I remember this being a part of car racing rules, the volume was based on the size of the engine, I think Min 1 litre catch volume for engines under 2000cc and 2 litres for over that. Not sure about bigger engines as had nothing to do with them.

I guess ideally it should be able to contain all the oil in the engine and/or gearbox plus a bit.

Edit: Naa, that's crap; what am I thinking?! Much less than that but perhaps half is a good measure?

I had my RG150 set up like that and it was quite useful.
I could tell when it was pumping oil, as it did a few times.
The sealing surface between the crankcase and gearbox on those bikes is tiny, I believe a leak there caused mine to build pressure in the gearbox.

My lesson was to make sure the gearbox end of the hose was very securely fastened...
