Parking at night in a rural 70kmh zone?

Ok so what are the rules with parking a car on the side of the road at night in a rural area with no street lights ?

According to NZTA :
A motor vehicle must not be parked on the road during the hours of darkness unless it is clearly visible to other road users. This means it should be lit by street lights, or you should turn on the tail lights and the side light nearest the centre of the road on the front of the vehicle.

So does this rule apply to Civilian & Police or do Police get exempted from this ... ?

Vehicles used to operate speed-measuring devices from a stationary position must be parked in accordance with the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 or any bylaws in force for that location. The Crown is exempt certain bylaws under the Transport Act 1962. Police officers have an exemption against parking related offences that arise under the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 by virtue of clause 1.8(3)(b) where the action was necessary in the performance of duty, but members must be prudent when parking their vehicle and ensure they do so in a safe fashion. For that reason, when selecting a location for stationary operation members must take care that their presence does not increase safety risks (such as those applying to lane merges) present at that location.

Parked ON the road is one thing ... parked on the SIDE of the road is another ... (as long as it is not obstructing the road) And the required (for WoF) rear reflectors fitted should make vehicles visible.

And if you can't see a police car parked (with all it's reflective signage) you need to get your eyes tested, and your lights adjusted ... Admit it, you just weren't looking.

And if YOU always park your vehicles at night on (or near) any roadway ... you MAY be in a position to comment. If YOU never do ... you are not in position to comment.

In the time of the Ministry of Transport ... Officers WERE required to have their park lights on at night if stopped/parked. NZ police have no such requirement.

I've lost count of how many times I've come over the brow of a hill or around a corner an there's a cop car parking half on and half off the road because he's in the process of booking somebody for something.

I've got no issue with people getting pulled for what ever reason,,,but for fuck sake why do they have to block half the lane to do it ?

The loads I carry are very often over width so I have to cross the center line to avoid these clowns and when there's so little warning it's just a matter of time before somebody pays the ultimate price of what to me looks like nothing more than a stupid an lazy action by those that would absolutely dump on anybody else that did the same thing.

So yeah,I guess the cops are above the very laws they shove down everybody else's throats.

The pain in the ass thing is when you come around a bend and the cop has pulled over someone on the otherside of the road, not only do you get some wicked bright LED blue and reds, but alternative flashing high beams.

Oh c'mon now, in practical terms a Police car blocking your lane to the extent you might have an accident is almost a non-issue. It's not as if you're speeding and outdriving your sightlines, right?

Although I will admit I've had a bit of a telling off from one officer who'd stopped someone, and his patrol car was parked in the usual manner. The double yellow centreline, the brow of the hill just ahead, and me refusing to take up more room than I was happy with, got this youngish officer quite excited. He calmed down when he found out I had 32,000 litres of JetA1 in my tanker...

But all in all, I don't have an issue with how Mr Plod parks most of the time...unless I'm speeding on my bike, which rarely happens :innocent:

What's the issue, I mean high beams aren't that dazzling when it's only one (at a time), are they? They just help us motorcyclists (and/or popo) be seen better, they don't annoy or frustrate other road users at all...
