Oh very nice, not alot of extra gear to clamp on, so the F3 and a change of skids should be suffice...

....not even close ...its SH39 and SH3, there and back to see how far it is.
And how did you get 13 out of 39/3?...:wait:
Don't worry...worked it out, a simple math equation

Arithmetic division: 39/3 = 13
(PS. That'll teach me to stop reading before the end...)
(PPS. The last line was added later, yes?)

Done, its not a long way, but when you get 20+ bikes on a group ride, it can the best part of the day to ride 330 kms.

Always a Learner/Newbie friendly ride, which is why we stop more often.
The lunch stop is for an hour or so, takes a bit to feed 20+ people. We normally get reserved tables set aside so getting a seat isn't a worry.
Te Kuiti to N/P is 160km and while that is doable without stopping, there is a stop at Awakino Pub for 10-15 mins, primarily for those like yourself.
I will add your name... so now you have to come...

Never be afraid to show your ignorance. If those around you have a problem with it the problem is theirs.

Now, when you figure out how to do this without feeling very exposed please let me know...

A ride of this nature generally gets split into smaller groups (depending on numbers) and each group leaves with five mintue intervals.
Each group has a ride leader who controls the speed of that group.
In essence, it is a group ride, not the kind that fragments into 25 riders trying to get to the next stop before everyone else.
We have riders of all levels and skill turn up, and without question, everyone shows self control and respect for those around them.
If getting from A to B is about getting the most out of everything in between? then you'll enjoy it.

Cool. Don't get me wrong I'm more than happy traveling at 100 and have done the road in question a few times on the Harley and hundreds of times by car (spent 7 months commuting weekly). Haven't done any group rides but will always ride how I'm comfortable - I ain't a leeming

There'll be another in April, and again at the better end of Winter, then back up North for a three dayer (taking in a ride to the Cape) in Nov 2013.
All you have to do is get out there and ride, experience is built up with time on the road.
Just remember, the rides we do are learner friendly, there is no place for heroic attitudes, you'll be fine when you feel that 100kph is comfortable. We stop every 80-90 Ks or so either for a coffee or lunch or just tyre kick.

Just go. You only get more experienced by riding. After this ride you would be two full days more experienced and there will be some great mentors on the ride to provide advice should you want. There will be plenty of rest stops. We'll look after you..

I can vouch for that - JafaSaffer and Mongolian looked after me on a recent ride to Raglan, and I'm a slowcoach.

Well said Jafa only, we don't Mentor, but there is always enough experience to offer up great advice to newbies, some have been riding since the 70's and 80's, Some do track days, Some often like to ride faster than what is expected on these rides. The pleasing aspect is that, all that attend, respect and show consideration to those they're riding with.

One thing we don't want, is for anyone to feel pushed..I do however, encourage the speed limit to be kept where possible. It's a safety thing.
You can book to come the day if thats what it takes.
But what I will ask, is that on a given day soon, you meet up with Mom and Myself and go for a wee ride?

Push yourself? Learn something and try it, maybe? Ruin someones ride = NEVER!. Exposure to something different, Yep that will happen if you are a newbie. No one will push you, or I will :spanking: them

Absolutely, sounds good guys. Give me a couple weeks though to practice? lol. I mean I'd love to come, but I know my limits. That said, every day I'm getting better and I'm out on my bike as much as I can BUT the fastest I've gone is 70kmph AND I'm a total newbie PLUS pretty much all my riding thus far is through lots of traffic and intersections, a far, far cry from open roads. If I'm not ready in time that's fine, but it will give me a reason to get out as much as I can, a goal if you will! Anyway it's over a month away, a lot can happen in that time, lol.

Thats all!

Its a good road sure, but it does have a problem. When you are not in a gorge, the road is fairly straight and there are a fair few overtaking opportunities. But in the gorge they are few and very very far in between. For all of them, provided there is no traffic going the other way, you would be lucky to get more then one bike though.

This wouldn't be a problem if it was a back road out in nowhere, but it's not. Its the main road coming into new plymouth from the north. Everybody and their grandparents use that road. Grandparents who seem to think that 100kph is recklessly fast. Grandparents who, in the middle of the gorge where the is an actual overtaking lane (all 50m of it), will not slow down so that the big black commodore and a certain red SV can get past. They only caught you up and have been sitting on your tail for the better part of 6km. What do they know about driving?

On the other hand you do occasionally get the good buggars who will give you every possible opportunity to let you overtake (I'm looking at you, Mr. Maui Campervan rentals  ) but sadly he was the only one on both my rides on SH3

Don't get me wrong, it is a fun road and deserves to be ridden. You just get wankers on it who have this idea of self preservation or some nonsense like that.

I did see that Justin, and thought Anne had replied, until that little bit of miscommunication was cleared up yesterday.
We have been away and just got this afternoon.
Firstly, a whole heap of congrats to the both of you, very very pleased to read the pm. The real bugger is that we are going on our summer holiday this Saturday (the 12th) for two weeks at a Northern beach.
If we were to be around at that time, we would have loved to attend.

You survived a trip to taupo you would survive to new Plymouth. These rides are well spaced out with plenty of stops along the way.

But just ride to your ability and not to ability of the person in front of you. sure you will have a blast, Mark and Anne are good people and a number of the others are very experienced riders so you will be with a good bunch..

Not many trips are so learner friendly. :-)

To do long rides, take a lot of building up for. Keep clocking up the Km's with increased distance on most of the rides. The first BIG ride does take it out of you ... but you will feel longer rides easier even now. You now know some of the problems you will face ... and are prepared.

Very doable indeed. But as many riders just starting to do big km trips ... often find it's a mental issue, not a tiredness issue.

For me ... 450 km's is not even a half day ride. From Paradise to Christchurch is 450 km. Two tanks of gas. (and have done it in 4 1/2 hours ... easily)

With less worry about how long you're taking ... and how far still to go. To relax and enjoy the ride ... and just worry about the 100 metres directly in front of you .. The km's fly by.

Just the accommodation price holding me back anyone that might be interested in sharing the cost of any of the options that come with an ensuite?

The only really winding bits are Awakinho Gorge and Mount Messenger and you get a break between the 2, but the road surface is ok. It's a 4 hour trip at a steady pace, so with the breaks and people around you it should be all good.

Would be nice to meet up part way with some people riding down....but wouldn't want to hamper the ride by adding too many bikes in.

With the size of the attending list, it's quite likely Maha will split it up into two groups. So if you brought even say, 10 bikes up, I suspect that will just be made into another group (Maybe 1 or 2 tagging on to the existing groups)

I've been riding for a long time but not so much on the open road and am a conservative rider by nature. I can manage 100k though (on the straight bits, anyway) and I've done the odd trip to Rotorua/Tauranga/Taupo.

So still trying to learn (and riding a LAMs approved bike). I'm looking to gain more confidence by doing more riding at open road speeds.

And I've been thinking about buying a tent anyway...

Hi, I'm Rodney and I'd like to be added to the list if that's OK.

And I've been thinking about buying a tent anyway...

from where in Auckland are you starting your journey? let me know if u want to go for a ride sometime before then.

I've been doing quite a few 100-120kish KM country rides up around your neck of the woods (north n west a bit!) if you or anyone else is interested. Gotta get used to being back in the saddle before the trip! :Punk:

Otherwise, Dairy Flat and coatesville-riverhead roads are good rides up norf n stuff.

Well, the East cape trip was a bit too much of a slog for me and my bike, but this could be about right! Could I meet up with the ride at Pirongia or Te Kuiti?

Are you still aiming to meet up somewhere? bluninja is meeting us at Te Kuiti.
We are looking to be in Pirongia (Cafe on the left, coffee stop) at around 11:45.
Te Kuiti probably 12:30 (think I told bluninja a later time ) but I have added the times to post #1.

Would be good for me to get an idea of how the NP ride will go ...its 330kms with our longest stint in the saddle being 90kms.
I have an idea of where to go this weekend...a nice spot in parts northern with an 80km ride from the start to lunch.
Thats the same distance of the first leg on the 9th, before a five minute regroup.

So Glowerss/Boss and nerrrd, if ya keen?

It has the advantage that I don't have to tell my boss that I can't come to his work dinner thing, but it would have been cool to meet some of people here, get some more experience and for a change not to always have to ride alone.

Here is one of the tunnels we spoke about.

Great, thanks again for organising everything and your hospitality.

I'm looking forward to seeing the tunnels in person. Very scenic too...actually the beaches looked pretty stunning on the way back down the coast yesterday also.

Reservations have been made at both Boscos (Lunch on Saturday) and Big Jims (Breakfast on Sunday)
Boscos from 12:30pm and Big Jims for breakfast from 9:30am Sunday.
Lunch on Sunday on the way back will be at Pirongia, but I will let them know that at the coffee stop on Saturday....massive PIES!
Pio Pio was an option, but thats an expensive over crowded waste of time.

As for the $10 to be collected by FLO for Saturday Pizzas at Base Camp? any money left over, if there is no objection, we would like to give it to the Cancer Society.

Should have booked earlier! There seems to still be a $70 cabin, or I can get a $60 room at a backpackers 3 km away...

Anyone else still looking at accommodation?

Maha

So it looks like all accommodation (apart from tent sites) have been booked for that Saturday night!

Damn procrastination:facepalm:

We've found a motel in walking distance that has rooms for pretty cheap :) I've attached the link below in case people left it too late like us :)

http://www.flamingomotel.co.nz/

So we're all booked and ready to go :)

If you can't get in at the Camp, the link above is where a few are staying.
But, someone may offer up a corner somewhere?...I think nerrd may have space? he got a cabin I think.

I've got one of these: "STANDARD 2 BERTH CABIN: has a double bed, heater, fridge and sea views. Use communal facilities. Sleeps 2."

So not sure how much extra space there'll be but if there's room someone else is welcome to it (I call shotgun on the bed, though.)

Keep an eye out for other rides we post up.
To put you mind at ease, there is always people that attend these ride that have not met any others.
These ride are put together with the newer in mind, we stop about every 80ks or so, it can take from 10am till 4:30pm to ride 350kms.
Lunch is normally a pretty casual affair, no rush, can take about an hour to feed 20-25 people, just when everyone is ready its time to go.
There will be a 3rd annual North Cape ride in Nov, over three days, piss easy...once again, not a rush job, take it easy and enjoy the days riding.
Just have to get in quickish really, I want no more than 24-25 bikes..that makes for an easy three group split.

Ok, the floor does not sound like me, so I booked a cabin with toilet. (Luxury I know). It has a room with a bunk, and a queen, so I guess I am the one with room. :)

Locked in, so I guess I am coming!

Monkfish: I don't know anyone either (except for random postings here). It just makes it more exciting, right? :)

Big thumbs up for this one

Didn't think there would be an issue, had to ask though because its not our money, we did the $10 thing in Taupo last year and it got us, 18 Pizzas for tea and enough food to feed everyone for breakfast the next morning.
Breakfast is at Big Jims on Sunday morning (link to menu in post 2) so there maybe some money left over, who knows?..Doogle might want to eat more that usual...

My first ride with this bunch I didn't know anyone either. Everyone is happy and friendly, so don't be a grouch and you'll fit right in.

As for the Hamilton riders, I was thinking of going to the ride by heading out toward Raglan, then turning down Te Pahu Rd and heading to Pirongia that way (Get us warmed up). If we are early we could do a lap of Limeworks Loop Rd?

Hmm, girl with a GN - might have to narrow it down from that course! But yes, I think my hazy memory remembers.

Ah, yes. And now I replaced the battery, mine is running rather well. Are you still running the original? If it's anything like mine yours might need a replacement in a bit. It was rather stressful until I figured it out. And don't even ask about getting the new one in...

Te Pahu road sounds like a great idea, it's been a good ride the time or two I have done it. I probably wouldn't join you for the limeworks loop though. Might be just a tad much extra saddle time for me. I already know the trip will be a long haul for me, and the softer parts would not forgive me if I added more!

mmm not sure how I got on the attending list, but I'll catch up on Saturday (some chores to do first) then scoot back to Auckland same day... things to do as well on Sunday...

At least it allows me to clock up some required kilometres for an upcoming trip.

A trip to say :wavey:
