View Full Version : White lines - Who respects them?
Mom

Not many people judging by the number of times I see cars over the white lines. It appears that this is getting worse, I have seen some shocking examples recently. It is not unknown for me to make some very well known gestures to oncoming traffic if I get the time to do so. Wankers!
I see bikes over them too! There have been a few times I have misjudged a corner and crossed the centre line, thankfully nothing coming the other way, but as a rule I am ok. It has been pointed out that from time to time I ride the "race" line, so I try hard not to do that, and have an ongoing mantra of "dont smack your head on the brick wall" (thanks to Mr Formby).
Seeing as it is biker death season, I thought I might remind people to not take the race line and actually ensure you are not close to the centre line for you never know when there will be some dickhead car driver on your side of the road.
If fact, try your best to stay well away from the white line on left hand corners you cant see around.

You know I was shocked once upon a time to learn of wanker bikers pulling mono's off traffic lights in traffic. Now I actually have exposed myself to the wanker/biker/commuter I am starting to get the picture, and I am getting really pissed off! I laughed most of the way down, there was yellow paint spread from arsehole to breakfast from cars not just clipping apexes but at least a dozen from actual overtaking.

Yeah it's diabolical alright. It's a shame the trucks' onboard camera doesn't capture all the suicidal driving/riding one sees day after day. We can all cross that centre line, me, I tend to do it at slow speeds :o But the Rossi road wankers are really a worry.
What actually prompted this thread was seeing a guy ride up the road I work on, it is a very curvy, divine bit of road. 50kph area and cars praked each side, all over the place. Not a road to take lightly, lots of driveways etc. In a car you HAVE to cross the centre line from time to time to get past cars praked on the road. Then you get the ones that straighten out the corners as well. Why the hell you would risk flying up that road taking the centre line is beyond me. Testorterone? Come on guys, explain?

Consider riding with the learner/newbie riders. Best thing ever. They feel safe riding with somone that has a bit of road craft. You are fairly immune from dickheads. And, best of all you get to encourage sensible riding and riders.

Respect pays no part in how people treat (or see) white or yellow lines. We ALL find the legislation regarding both ... inconvenient at times.
Sometimes ... we know there is no risk to us ... or anybody else.
Sometimes ... we think there should be no risk ...
Sometimes ... we just hope ...
Sometimes we get lucky ...

Reminds me of a very sloppy rider I caught up to down sh22 last Saturday. The rider was going into a blind left hander taking a wide line into the oncoming lane then exiting wide as well. I followed him for a good 5 mins and there were at least 5 corners where the rider is alive by pure chance. The weird thing is I'm far from being a fast rider and don't know the road very well, yet i stayed in my lane and caught up to and got stuck behind this twat. Im on my little 300 he was on some honda with 2 exhausts out the back. He acted real surprised to see me behind him when he was turning off and saw me in his mirror, panicked and swerved to the left. :weird:

The safest line on the road can often be the quickest if you ride it well. Caution & forethought does not mean slow.
Thoughtless driving has become almost typical. I'm getting pedantic about my line of sight through a corner. I want to see that sporadically piloted vehicle as soon as possible so I can get out of the way, if I'm not already leaning out of Dodge. It happens every ride.

There is no point complaining or campaigning. There are two constants in this world.
1. Motorbikes attract idiots, thats why alot of us got on them. In fact I think there has been idiots on motorcycles well before sane people started riding them. So I wonder why all the idiots out there aren't complaining about all the slow/careful riders out there filling up the roads.
2. Driver training nowadays is based upon Murray's book of dairy farming. The dumber and more cosseted the driver the better. Skills, patience, consideration and concentration are no longer needed. You just need to follow the thousands of signs, the rumble strips, and your GPS and if you cock up the armco, concrete barriers or the cheese cutters will save you before you run into someone head on.

I take a common sense approach to road markings. Sometimes, roads marked with broken white lines are pretty unsafe should really be double yellows, while some solid whites and even (much less frequently) double yellows are ok for a sensible, quick pass on a sportsbike. I am talking about situations where you can see the road ahead, any periphery roads, any dips/blind spots etc. and you can safely decide to pass. So yes, I ignore some white lines, but never at the risk of doing something stupid.
Oh...and the same applies to wheelies...time and place and all that. Perhaps off traffic lights in heavy traffic isn't a bright idea, but other times they can be done just fine.

Our yard at work is located at the bottem of a steep hill with a sharp left hander at the top of it.
Because that left hander is slightly off camber for people taking it as a right hander heading down the hill "most of them cut it well over the center line.
50 meters before that corner on the up hill left hand side is a side road that often has kids waiting for the school buss where it meets the main rd.
So I leave the yard an head up the hill in my truck "having to keep well out from the left side due to the kids being there "and one of two things happen quite often.
#1 some fool will pass me just as I get up to the side road and be completely over the line all the way around the corner. #2 some fool will cut the corner just as I'm coming up to it "and give themselves a fucking big scare when they see me there.
I've been waiting 7 years for the day both things happen at the same time,,,the only good point is when it finally does happen "none of the fools will be alive to blame me:facepalm:

White lines/yellow (double or otherwise) own side of the road, don't mean squat to some..I have witnessed some OMGWTFFFF moments over the years.
And will probably continue to do so for years to come.
There are times when its possible to pass a slow vehicle where, whats painted on the road dictates that you really should not.
The worse case I have seen is, a bike in front of me, pull out and pass about 4 cars over double yellows and still on the wrong side of the road whilst going around a right hander.
I should point out that you could see through the corner, but cars can appear out of know where when you least expect it.
.........and not a crest in sight....;)

I won't cross yellow lines, but if I can clearly see all the way through a corner I may choose to straighten it a bit.
However if there is any doubt otherwise, I stay on my side. It is fun isn't it to see your lane as the whole road and stay within it? Good practice?
I do see far too often, bikers completely ignoring any and all road markings. Probably in the belief they are high enough to see and small and quick enough to pass without risk. What is more apparent now too, though, are those lane-splitting at too fast a speed. Not much margin for error at any time, but these guys are just asking to be clobbered!

Nothing more satisfying than going down a new twisty road, and nailing it, quickly, safely and without crossing the centrelines or putting yourself or others in an OMGWTF situation....
Over here, there are double whites, often, where there shouldn't be double whites! Often where there are passing lanes one side, there,s a double white so those coming downhill are not to pass! With 4-500m clear visibility! Fukem - we pass!

I used to use all the road if the way was clear but under the influence of Nick Ienatch I now try to stay on my own side of the road. It is still possible to have cars comiing straight at you while in your own lane though. We need luck as well as skill.

Interesting view this....look at it from the 'other' side.
Your way of thinking says 'we' can't do wheelies, do anything more than putt around at 100k, do skids, drag a knee, or any of the other things we enjoy about riding.
If I read that right, you are trying to limit our enjoyment, even more than the powers that be already have. If I want boring, I'll borrow your white tin can to drive around. :bleh:
Not at all, if you want to pretent to be Rossi etc, go to the right place to do it? What I was saying in reply to bandit is, that when the frequent (I wont say inevitable) OFF happens through, stupid riding, too fast, incorrect lines, no regard for roadcraft DO NOT lead to, as you point out, increased legislation and Gubbermint Interventions. Those of Us who whinge, feel insecure, superior, old fuckers/coots, Nana's, scaredycats, etc etc, will probably stop complaining?
Oh just FYI.. you cant borrow my 'white tin can; to drive round in, I'm a MOTORCYCLIST, I don't own an effin car sonny.
As you were, now be a good lad, my pipe and slippers are over there ------>>> :bleh:

Jeez - why do you all give so much time, effort and space in your head to complain about what other people are doing?
But..but..but YOU are doing just that right now...:shutup:
Oh, I see, just another troll eh? - carry on...

.... Can I ride like Ruben Xaus then? :Pokey:
I hope you have shitloads of ductape.
Yep - if I can overtake safely in the distance available, I pay feck all heed to road markings.
What he said. In fact years ago (probably before 87.56% of kids on KB were born) there used to be a ministry of transport funded programme hosted by Denny Hulme. He used to advise crossing the centre line on tight bends (yes that you could clearly see ahead), promoting it was safer and easier.
But then again, he did hit a wall when he died.

Sorry GW, he's right. It's the Skatman premise, party A (everyone) is blamed for the actions of party B, (teh Govt.)
Fact is the people that make the rules are no longer doing so for the benefit of the majority of road users, they're doing it to minimise costs.
If you don't like the fact that you have to crawl around our roads and pay a substantial wad of cash for the privilege then don't blame anyone but the guys making the rules.

Not quite, he suffered a heart attack and managed to get the car safely off the track before he died. Genuine hero, that one.

I did note that, but some may not understand the full story so just a bit of clarification for their sake. No offence intended.
