For some unknown reason I stumbled upon a Bjork tune a couple of weeks ago and I can't put it down. I was never a fan, it was always a tad weird for my tastes. There's about 10 tracks off of various albums, I know albums eh, that I'll happily throw on loop and listen to over and over and over etc... just wish there was somewhere other than iToons to get the tracks and stash in a play list on my portable non-tape non-cd music playing device.
Have you found, or re-found for that matter, something from 20 odd years ago that you never thought would make it into your collection in the near future?

Yup. Edith Piaf, Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Nillson etc. My collection is nothing if not eclectic. Most of it is on vinyl as well....

AC/DC, Little River band, Lynard Skynrd, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, The Cars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=stVz6gURpSQ), Daft Punk, Doris Day, Creedance Clearwater, Disco... Pretty wild and varied discoveries or re-discoveries for me in the last ten years. Must be the aging process.
And country but not the "My horse died and my wife was shot by the lawman" kinda country, it's the satire rock country like the "Met this hot woman in the bar and things got sexy when suddenly he said..." kinda country music. e.g. latter day Toby Keith and Trace Adkins.

Well, many years ago my dad said to me that someday I'd appreciate classical music. And a few months ago we had the privilige to see the Vienna Chamber Orchestra live in Vienna, and once they got into it...awesome to hear all those familiar tunes.
Made me dust off that stack of classical CDs when we got home, might even improve my culture a little.

1.) Mozart and Haydn. I was always a classical freak but as a younger man, was into the Romantics - Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz etc and Mahler especially. I always scoffed at Mozart - called him "the divine sewing machine - endlessly turning out perfect patterns, har har har."
Then when I took up piano playing again in mid life I discovered just how bloody perfect those patterns were - same with Haydn. More patience to actually take notice and the loss of the conviction that I already knew everything about everything  helped.
2.) "Rock" music in general. Despite a classical bent, I did get to listen to Pink Floyd once and that was it. I listened to everything and anything after that. Loved it - Pink Floyd was, and still is, a favourite; Steppenwolf, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Nitty Gritty Dirt, The Band - all kinds of stuff. Part of the age I lived in at the time I suppose but some great music.
Now just about anything. Anything I like...

My favourite bands are the likes of nirvana, credence clearwater revival, cold chisel, pink floyd, metallica, pearl jam, queen, lynard skynard, led zeplin, hendrix, eric clapton etc.
The band that I found out I enjoy recently is a pop band called fun. They sing that song some nights. If you enjoy queen listen to the intro to their album "fun:some nights".

I was never a great fan of classical music unless there was a choir involved. Once upon a long ago whilst still at school my step mum scored us some tickets to enjoy Handels Messiah in the city 100 miles away. We rocked up, pah, in my still don't know where I lost it Belstaff jacket (fuckin great jacket, must get another, better late than never), hair half way down my back (fuck I had hair once) steel toeys, ripped jeans and my mate, combat fatigues, Doc Martins, shaved head apart from a long shock of hair than hung below his chin and died shocking pink ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa... the looks we got. We also got a few smiles and telling nods from a couple of teachers from our small school who had rocked up as well. Fuckin brilliant in a church, big band (Orchestra), amazing choir... wish I'd stayed "straight" long enough to see more live music.
Just back from the CD draw, heh... one of the first things I locked my eyes on was Ravi Shankar (RIP), stunning to listen to, got a bit of pan pipe in there, plenty of psychedelia for some unknown reason :innocent:, a few house LP's in a bag, Blondie (Parralel Lines), ELO, Floyd, Zeppelin, Clapton, Cream, Sting, The Police, Genesis, The Kinks, The Kooks, bit of dance, some bangin hard core techno, 2 versions of Messiah and all sorts of stuff in between and thank fuck there was no Prince in there. Similar to Mr Fox, I guess it's anything I like at the time... I guess I don't get enough time to listen to music any more.

This.
There are some very early Elvis (pre-Army) clips on u toob and he was an electrifying performer. Thats a GREAT version of BMOK.
I'm getting right back into my 80's collection: Stranglers, Psychedelic furs, Blondie, Joan Jett: all that post punk stuff: Gang of Four and Wire and Echo and the Bunnymen etc etc. Oh and Talking Heads. And the Ramones and stuff.

...the vile pseudo music of eighties Britain where I was domiciled, and subjected to...the price you paid for wanting to listen to the actual DJ's...Steve Wright, DLT, John Peel etc...Andy Kershaw was different, I'd love to hear the shit he played but prob will never again...I can almost appreciate the production and presentation of some of those quasi homo bands like Duran Duran etc and even caught myself being wistful over a Soft Cell tune recently..Tainted Love..the original wasn't much better...

I've never been a Micheal Jackson fan but have just been watching Jools Holland on the Rialto channel and saw a guy and gal doing a version of 'Billie Jean'. Brilliant, I loved it.
I think they were called Civil War. The dude looked a bit like Johnny Diepe.

As a lad learning the guitar in my teenage years I was very unforgiving of pop music and country and, well anything that didn’t fit my ideal.
Over the years I’ve gone from hating Eric Clapton and the Eagles to going 180 and loving them. That happened a while ago, recently I got big time into country music & pop which has opened up lots of new doors.
Additions recently – Anne Murray, The Carpenters, Harry Nilsson, Eric Carmen, Whitney Houston, Bananarama, Bob James, Patti Page, Deorado, Emmylou Harris, Loverboy, Bob Dylan, Def Leppard, Chet Atkins, Gerry Rafferty, Marshall Tucker….
Out the door seems to be Heavy Metal which I loved as a teenager.
On the classical side Piano concertos used to depress the hell out of me but these days I find them quite interesting…?
Loving being open to anything. Couldn’t care less what other people think any more.
The hard part is finding time to listen to it all but it’s cool to have a huge collection to draw on. Nothing better than popping a beer, grabbing the headphones and spending into the wee hours letting music take me wherever…..

Newbie to Kiwibiker! I went to the Devo concert in December and it was great. They played a lot of their old stuff as well as some of the new. I don't know if it counts as a guilty pleasure but was well worth the money spent.

Cool thread...and I am not even a music nerd :)
I never thought in a million years that I could enjoy Folk music, but the Kingston Trio changed that (though I'll admit that the movie A Mighty Wind helped)

Then there's the yang to this thread's yin: Music that you really should like based on the rest of your collection, but in actual fact you can't stand.
Exhibit A: Talking Heads.

Lucinda Williams. Heard her live album on Nat Radio and had to get it. Way too close to country music for my normal tastes

Young guy with old men. But it's stayed on high rotation. Probably for Kirk's harmonies.

I got stuck in Alaska for a bit.
Could only get one station on the radio
It was one of those "two kinds of music - country and western" stations
But the programmer did really know his material - and played mostly the good stuff
These days I like good music from all genre - from baroque classical to heavy metal.

First Aid Kit? If it is them you meant, I had a wee listen and for some reason they remind me of Leonard Cohen, but on happy pills and with more instruments. T'would certainly be in the pile that I wouldn't usually listen but would probably happily listen too (made it through 3 or 4 tracks tapping toes etc...). Good luck wiv the punk... I could never really get into it.
