Last week he walks into the lounge room: basketball boots, shorts, singlet, cap on backwards, iPod blaring, - (just been down the outdoor court having a game with/dunking on the Asians.)
She says 'You are such a boy.'

My memory is different MSTRS,I was a teenager when the Wahine went down,
Mk4 Zephyrs were around then (MOT had them)
Cop cars were grey with a single blue light on the roof.
10 cents could get you a piece of fish and some chips
A pie was 25 cents.
Petrol was 36 cents a gallon (under 9 cents a litre).
3rd party insurance was part of your rego fee.
I protested against raising the level of Lake Manapouri.
1/2 dozen BIG bottles of beer was $1:97
Cars needed a valve-grind every 40,000 miles (70,00km) or so the gargres said.
Sigh....
There was a Motorway, the very first one,and we used to cross it like any road....to get to the other side I suppose. But you had to be carefull because it was wide (4 lanes) and cars went faster than normal....and we had to look out for Cop cars - they were MkI Zephyrs and painted turquoise - I'll take disbelief as being proof the poster was not there.....

All this nostalgia....Mark1 Zephyr's were still almost new, I watched the Wahine go down, and as a young Republican I registered my complaint with the Monarchy by refusing to stand for the anthem at the 'flicks'.
Harrumph. Well if someone gave you a good clip over the ear for disrespect, 'twas probably me.
Used to annoy me that did.

'Twas not *A* motorway, 'twas *The* motorway.
And we used to go and drive down it, not to go anywhere, but just to say "we drove on The Motorway last night". I remember those turquoise Zephyrs. I knew someone had a Mk I Zephyr with TARTAN PLASTIC SEATCOVERS. The very height of sophistication, how we envied him.

Of course I wouldn't have been so impressed if I'd known about all the troubles they had with this model. Overheating for a start. Apparently in the British Ford HQ for many years "Mark IV" was a swear word.

I owned a Mk 4 Zephyr until some pillock stole it  . Didn't have any particular problems, except that the steering was heavy as , and it tended to leak from the rocker covers. Gutless but.
The Mk1 was better for its day.
Better still was the radar unit they used to sit on the roof. Big as a TV set (not kidding) and with a huge aerial on top of it that looked like it was made from half a dozen coat hangers.Could only be used on a stationary car of course. Radar was magic then, kids used to come out and hang round and watch open mouthed when word went round that the cops had their radar out.

Never saw one on the roof but saw plenty hanging off the rear bumper, big barrel shaped units, maybe 500 mm diameter. Course they couldn't chase you with one of those hanging off, so they would stand out on the round with a raised hand. Gentlemens rules decreed that the speeder would stop.

WE have a railway line running along the back of our house, and every now and then Mainland steam run an excursion train (usually an Ab or a Ja). When that happens lots of the neighbours pop out and watch the train go by, then nod to each other with a "I remember those things" look.
And theres a thing - the road sign for a railway line is a stylised steam engine - yet most young drivers today wouldn't have ever seen a real one. No wonder people get bowled by them from time to time.

Yeah, they were the later ones, replaced the older big square "on the roof" model. Considered very sneaky and unfair, cos they were hard to spot (!)

My uncle owned one for some years. And used it to tow his big caravan out to the Orewa Holiday Camp every year with it. He seemed happy enough. But his attitude was that it was up to everyone else to get out of his way. Sort of rolled on at a relentless 35 mph.
People didn't worry so much about overheating then. The Razorback used to be lined with cars with steam billowing from them. Just wait for it to cool down, top up the water , and carry on.

Yeah, with only a 4lb cap on the radiator (or less) it doesn't take much to reach boiling temperature.
My F100 has no fan and a 4lb cap, boils if you are doing too much low speed manouevring but no damage gets done.
Not like when you get a boil-over with a 16lb cap.

Did the Pilot even have a pressurised system? 'twas thermosyphon I think, no pump, and most of those old ones weren't pressurised at all. E93A Prefect, which was similar to the Pilot (same weird suspension design and funny valves) had no pressure. Solid brass screw on radiator cap.

Well, I remember when I was a kid and my parents shifted into Ponsonby. The "new" house had a wonder quite new to me. A light that came on with a switch on the wall. No candles or oil lamps. So I remember when electricity came out. New fangled stuff, never trusted it. And a fancy flush toilet down the back of the yard.Just pull the chain. And as much water as we wanted with no worry about running the tank dry.
And my great-great grandmother told me about going down to the Onehunga wharf with HER mother, to help receive the women and children evacuated from the Waikato during the Maori War (Her father's ship had been commandeered by the Navy) . And one of her uncles was killed (and eaten, according to family legend) in that war.

Well, i can't claim an obviously distinguished age as some here lay claim to. But I have emptied the old "bucket toilets" a few times in my life. My nana and poppa had such arrangements in there batch and I was (no laughing) a boy scout for 8 years and often in camp (perhaps my parents didn't like me). And the camp toilets where big buckets to be dragged away carefully as not to make waves and get covered and then tipped in to a hole and covered, then clean the "buckets" ….yum yum. This task along with pealing potato's and other unpleasant task fell to misbehaving scouts like my self. ……and I still haven't learned to behave

The ultimate in kick start horror stories must be the Panther 650single, or 'leg breaker'. Had Phelon and Moore continued to increase the capacity England could have had the first man in space. Was also the longest running design. 44yrs with only basic mods.
Looks like the dubious distinction of oldest rider falls between 'Oldrider' and myself. It's down to birth dates now and as my 66th is December I may have to concede defeat. May have the longest family history in biking though. Dad rode from the mid 1920s to 1964. His Dad from first world war to 1930s. Me from 1955. Younger brother from 1959 and still riding a Velo Clubman. Three other brothers rode in the 60s. Both sons rode. Oldest for a few years. Youngest for 15yrs. No young guys coming on to keep the tradition going though. Oldest grandsons, 18 and 15, not allowed bikes. Great pity. They're going to miss out on a lot of fun.

I'll have to find out from my Uncle when Grandad started riding bikes, because I may be a contender in this particular "pissing contest" :devil2: My grandfather turned 15 during WWI so he and your grandfather could have been on the roads around the same time - I don't know.
Grandad, at least one great uncle, both parents, at least one uncle, one female cousin that I am aware of, both my brother and I, at least one sister (I think), both brothers-in-law, a couple or more nephews and one niece - and my 2- and 3-year-old boys are showing all signs of being part of the 4th generation in our family to ride bikes.

Yeah, but as you'll be riding long after I'm gone you'll be taking the record back. All my hopes to stay ahead rest on my youngest grandson, 4yrs old, and me riding for another 12yrs. That would make me 78. Possible, but unlikely. Pm me in 2018 for an update. A guy I looked up to a long time ago was Sir Ralph Richardson, the Brit actor. He turned up for a world premier of a film on a new BMW. He was 82. Always hoped I could beat him. Surprising how biking runs in families though. I read the Brit bike mags and see the same names as I saw in the 60s. Another guy, Tony Moss competed in five classes at the IOM TT. Best placing. 21st Finished in all races. Age. 64. Only been racing four years. Now why can't I do that??? No regrets about getting old. Retirement means I can pick the days when I want to ride. A guy I looked up to a long time ago was Sir Ralph Richardson, the Brit actor. He turned up for a world premier of a film on a new BMW. He was 82.
I think it was Sir Ralph that Jon Pertwee (Third Doctor Who) used to meet up with at Hyde Park each morning (while they were on their way to their respective jobs) and they'd have a quick couple of circuits of the park before going on their way.
Both of them rode bikes late in life - I plan to as well.
Why is it unlikely you will be riding at 78 years old?

.. No waiting for rainy weekends, if the sun's shining I'm riding. Life's good. :ride: :ride: :ride:
Why on earth should it be unlikely ? I most certainly intend to be riding at 78.(God willing, to b sure, but He knows that I'm his only supply of custard squares, so I reckon I've got him over a barrel) . And if Sir Ralph gave up at 82 he was a wuss.

Calmone, did you know a MOT traffic Cop in Petone named Bob Tutt (Deceased). I think I owe him a vote of thanks. After a very eventful day of chase around Petone, Wngtn and back a few times, he caught me trying to hide my bike in the Buick Street toilets. He made me ride it home slowly while he followed close behind. when I got home he made me pull the head and wheels off it and told me if he ever saw me on it again he would throw the book at me. His advice was to sell it and go away. I was very pissed that day. I sold the bike and signed on to a ship and left the country. I think now that he did me a big favour and that he was a great guy. I stayed at sea for the next 4 years. The poor old Cops can't do things like that today. I had a fair few belts around the ears and kicks up the arse from coppers back in those days. Didn't hurt, they cant do it in this PC world today. Mores the pity too. Cheers John.

Ah, now that's probably the real age distinguisher. Between those who have heard (and smelled) the night-cart, and those who have no idea what it was.
I never saw the night carts in Upper Hutt but only missed them by a few years. A mates older brother told me how once they removed a pin that held on one of the carts wheels. Apparently it was pretty messy when the cart rounded Cloustons Corner. (for UH people, thats the corner where MacD's is. Blockbuster video building was once Cloustons garage. All that shit on the road then - having MacDs there now seems appropriate
However I do remember steam locos hauling the suburban trains, and rode between Wallaceville and Upper Hutton one of the first electric units. So yeah, fairly oldish.

How many of you travelled over the Rimatakas by train or railcar before the tunnel went in. some of my olds used to drive the trains and work in the refreshment rooms etc at X creek, way back. Been there done that. Going through the tunnels up hill in the train on a hot day was murder. Alright in the railcar. My father was a driver. History now, long gone. I served my time as a Fitter at Woburn Railway workshops, 1955/60 left NZ Feb 61. I had just turned 21. Cheers John.

Then you might be interested in the restoration thats planned for the incline and the settlements at the summit and cross creek.
http://www.rimutaka-incline-railway.org.nz/
Also there is a restored Fell loco and lots of memorabilia of the line at Featherston. The railcars wouldn't have gone over the hill, it was too steep for anything except the Fells. The incline is now a nice walk / bicycle track, and a real monument to what was accomplished with pick and shovel. (Nowdays they need earthmovers just to put in a driveway)

pete376403, thanks for that info on Rimutaka rail. Yes the rail-cars did go over the hill but only the old Wairarapa "Tin Hares" as they were called. They had a special reduction gearbox and center line brake system. They were about the size of a bus and ran from Palmerston North through Woodville and Masterton to Wellington. I can remember going over on them myself and my father was often driving it when I went. Can you ride a motorbike over the track? That would be good. Cheers John.

Blah. My earliest 'revolutionary' memory was a commodore 64 computer...
We never had one... "far too much and a waste of time when you could be outside playing" said my mum.
I remember our first push-button telephone too... Finally got rid of the old circle faced one. And having TWO phones in the same house!!!
Phoor!
Ooh! And Telethons! I remember (later) being unable to stay awake past 9ish - was too tired.

A big no-no BUT - should be possible. Last time I was at the Wairarapa end the access track was washed out. Should be fixed by now.
BTW
Most of us are trying to forget Telethon

me Im as old as them that hills.
earliest memories of godzone were -milk deliveries in bottles-4c a pint.
wine gums 3 for 1 cent. Fruju's first coming out and they had real chunks of fruit in them. tram rides in downtown Auckland.
Going to Maraetai beach and collecting Pipi's from the sand.
Walking into the neighbours house in Pakuranga - house wide open doors open. They had gone down to the beach for a swim.

You done got ripped off! Wine gums and dew drops were 4 for a penny!!
Chewing gum was expensive - 4 pieces for tuppence!!
Remember those cordial filled round plastic containers that everybody put on their car aerials??
They were about the size of a soft-ball semi-clear and you cut the stem off to drink the cordial (they gave you a leaf shaped plastic 'saw' with the drink but it was useless).

You COULD ride a motorbike over - it would be a nice gentle outing - but you'd sure raise hell with the walkers and bicyclists. From memory there is a stile or maze type fence that you have to climb over / walk through at the kaitoke end - just to keep trailies out.
