Helmets double your chances of surviving a crash without a serious brain injury.
That sound pretty good until you consider that motorcycling is 18-25 times more dangerous than using a car.
The helmet helps, but its not magic.
And for what its worth, helmets are not compulsory for Sikh or others with an appropriate religious belief, or medical reason. Sikh don't even need to apply for an exemption, they hold it as of right.

If he's a Sikh, he's not allowed to wear anything on his head other than a turban. I believe exceptions are available on religious grounds.
ACC levies are so high because motorcyclists don't have the capacity to unite behind a lobby group. ACC motorcycle levies have nothing to do with actual injuries. They are an arbitrary tax applied to a group who looks like they are more vulnerable than most (despite the most expensive customers for ACC being a bloke with a chainsaw, a woman with a wheelbarrow and a woman riding a horse) and so can be targeted with made up stats and just because. The constant ad hominen whine about other motorcyclists "making our levies so high" is just another sign that the Government has not only won, we believe wholeheartedly the propaganda they used to justify raising it. Well I don't but I'm picking that you've perhaps bought into it?
It was a long term cash grab, based on making ACC a commercial medical insurance scheme.
How's this for a cunning first step for milking motorcyclists? They allowed the top end of the capacity range for LAMS bikes to exceed the second tier of ACC levy charges.
Stop blaming other motorcyclists for our failures at politics and have a think about how we can present a united front that is socially acceptable and therefore garners public support. "Motorcycling NZ Inc." needs to have at least a weekly presence in the press. Every time a motorcyclist is injured or dies there needs to be an expression of sympathy and call to investigate the causes of the incident and an offer of support to families, first responders and investigating agencies. Every time more than three motorcyclists get together and give money to charity there needs to be a motorcycle friendly article, not a hugely inaccurate piece of fluff written by a 12 year-old female reporter with one eye on a telly job telling us how lovely bikies are when they're not dealing P. Being visible once every 10 years or so is not doing "us" any good. Neither is using a public forum to further support the Government's "divide & conquer" strategy which so far is jolly well winning without much of a push back.

What is the issue there .. those that want to pay the extra levy price (for a bigger bike) ... are free to do so. If they want to take the risk ... and can afford the full levy.
LAM's are for a class of (licensed) riders. The levies are for a class (engine size) of bike..
I doubt if many L plates will be attached to 650 cc (and over) bikes anyway ... but can happen now.

Registrations shouldn't have ACC levies at all. We all already pay something like 2.5% of our income towards ACC so why should some groups have to pay again when others like horse riders and rugby players don't.

So...any stats to prove 'clowns' on motorbikes who wear turbans instead of helmets injure their head more frequently/severely than people who wear helmets???
Stats from turban capital of the world (London):
improperly secured turbans become undone while riding, and getting caught in the spokes.
This tightens the turban suddenly and causes severe headinjuries, fatal above 50 kmh.
Turban checks on pullstart injuns to be included in WOF inspections
Red button push start Injuns however are exempt.

Rugby players do pay ACC. Its in their membership subscription fee at every club in the country. And all the semi-pro to full time professional players from regional through Super 15 and of course, the All Blacks pay it as well, from their salaries...
Its like saying why should I pay 30% fucking tax when you may only pay 20% and some pricks pay none, like akzle because he's such a clever bastard, being separate from this society and all that BS...some carry others due to being easier to tax because their activities are more easily monitored.
Try accurately measuring horse useage so as to levy the rider an acc charge...

Actually ... the Koran does not mention 72 virgins or even 1 virgin awaiting you on death anywhere in it's script. It is generally held to be a western mistranslation of one part that refers to something along the lines of the dead going to paradise which is filled with flowing water and fruit etc and getting 72 grapes (or possibly raisins). What a disappointment huh.Offing yourself in the hope of getting 72 nubiles and ending up with a bunch of grapes instead.

What is it with these idiot with straps not done up? Do they think the vacuum inside hteir head will hold the helmet in place when they arse-up??
Or even worse, those ones riding a push-bike with the helmet hanging from the handle-bars and banging on the knee all the time?
Are they some kind of super-athlete that can scoop the helmet off the handle-bars, strap it on - and do so while flying through the air after T-boning the car that pulled out of the drive-way on front of them???
Dumb fuckwits...
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree... clearly you don't realise that it's NEVER going to happen to them! Duhhh ;) ;) ;) joshin ya...

I see cycle riders sans helmet quite often. I asked a member of the local constabulary about it and the reply was to the effect that the cops will stop a child without a helmet and give them a come to Jesus talk. Adults they ignore. If the adults want to kill themselves that's their problem.
Which gives me a problem. If that law (or any other) isn't going to be enforced, get it off the books. Fat chance!

I badger the adult riders - I give them the argument that 'little guys emulate what big guys do' (OK, I don't use the word 'emulate' when talking to slack-jawed troglodytes!!) and tell them the younger ones who are less proficient (OK, I also don't use 'proficient'...) and more likely to crash also see 'big people' not wearing helmets and think it's cool to be like them...and not wear a helmet.
They mostly see what I'm saying.
If they don't - second time is ticket time...

We have a neighbour who has a KTM 450, looks quite new. He races up and down the road all the time with no helmet on, doin wheeleies and shit and I,m just dreading the day when I have to hose his thick gooey skull matter off of the road in front of the house so the cats do not lick it up, then vomit it all over the house.:Punk:

When young we rode without helmets. When older I used to travel to Italy in the summers (I lived in Skandinavia) where you did not need a helmet. These days I ride dirt bikes on the beach without a helmet. And I have never used a helmet on a pushbike. I am clearly of a different breed, as when I sit on a bike w/o a helmet my head does not explode and I die, like the rest of you. Let those who ride decide.

I have ridden without a helmet too,and still do, but nowhere near like what this fella does, If I have no helmet I just pootle along. But hey Its his life and he can do whatever he wants, I am more worried about him doing it outside my place, cos then I would feel obliged to help the fuckwit. Purely selfish motivation.:Punk:

a helmet to me... is like my seatbelt in my car. There's never a time I don't wear it minus moving it around in a car park etc. I just feel naked, kind of exposed... I won't even let anyone ride in my car without a seatbelt on, not for their sake but for mine... it's probably just indicative of the age I grew up in, safety conscious in that. It's all very natural to me, never a nuisance and not something I've ever had to think about twice. To each their own but I'd hate to have people think I'm OTT by choosing to wear my helmet always...

I agree with you 100%! Helmets, like seat belts, are not a fashion accessory they are to stop your head cracking open and spilling your brains out in the hopefully unlikely event you fall off.

Yep.
Lots of things might kill me. I don't worry about them all, sometimes I just do stuff cos its fun, even if its not perfectly safe. Like riding a motorcycle for example.
I wear a helmet most of the time, but not always.
I enjoy the sights and smells of the country, tootling down a quiet back road, or down the beach to a good surfcasting spot. Often with my helmet on, sometimes not.
And I enjoy watching the same kiwis who lecture me about my helmet usage, blasting around Rarotonga on scooters they don't know how-to-ride while half pissed and helmetless.
Lots of people believe helmets are magic and if they have the magic on their head they will be OK.
Me, I just ride carefully all the time. I think my helmet is a helpful non magic bit of compressed foam, that if I am lucky might help. Then again it might not.

Speaking of smells, all I smell is people burning crap in their backyards, stinky car fumes and the occasional god awful burp inside my helmet after I've eaten Indian food. BUT today I rode past the sea and what a lovely smell that was! All the things you miss when you're in your cage. I don't believe in magic, just feel like a helmet or a seatbelt, whichever is applicable, is just another extension of myself, second nature really... what other people do I would probably frown but could really care less, so long as it doesn't effect me then meh.

Ice cream burps in the helmet are the best!

I'd prefer an icecream burp, if I had to choose.

Rum burps are fairly entertaining so I'm told. My work commute takes me past the sewerage setting ponds and from time to time it's like someone has done a bottom-burp in my helmet.

When young we rode without helmets.
Yeah me too ... I was riding aroudn Auckland on the day that helmets became compulsory - and I didn't have one .. I have a Beritish Motorcycle News magazine from 1949 with a letter saying arguing against the introducion of complusory helmet laws (yeah - that long ago) on the grounds that helmets were only of use when an accident was actually happening and therefore making them compulsory was a waste of time ...
But the bikes we had then were slower ... (so were their brakes - slower to work I mean - and had frames made from pasta) ...
Three months after helmets were made compulsoty a rider I knew loaned his helmet to his girlfriend so she could sit on the back and he'd drop her off at home .. half a mile later a car went through a red light - he went over the bonnet and hit his head in the gutter across the road ... died five days later ... his girlfriend was thrown a distance, rolled, stood up and walked away ... those of us who watched it happened never rode, or let anyone one the back, without a helmet.
I swore I'd never ride in a full face .. 'till I bought one for commuterr comfort asnd then dropped a bike and the full face saved my face from any damage ...
Now, when I, on the very rare odd occassion, ride without a helmet it brings back memories - and a few fears too .. I'd never seriously ride without one .. they have saved me on a number of ocassions ..
