Just finished looking at a heap of HA pics from the 70's, amazing how back then people (including HA etc) didn't feel obliged to 'flip the bird' at the camera, I guess they were more mature back then...

Guess it's a lot harder to freak out squares now that it was in 1960s USA.
There's a really good book by Hunter S. Thompson called Hells Angels. He went and spent a lot of time hanging out with the original Californian group in around the same time that LIFE photo essay was done.
Really interesting look into how the first Angels lived, I don't know much about MC gangs but seems like the modern Angels are a completely different thing altogether.

I see them as just one of many fascinating byproducts of a fascinating time (1960s USA).
Doesn't mean I condone the shit they got up to, because a lot of it was not very nice.
And some of them did have really cool bikes.

'Outlaws' have always held the public's fascination. Wrong side of the tracks sort of thing. Heck even I got caught up in some shit a few years back with a well known gang here because to me it was interesting. Took me a while to realise for them it wasn't just 'interesting', it was their way of life.

1. Please, could the mod who changed the original heading make it correct and remove that aphostrophe in HELL'S to make it HELLS
2. This thread was started to provide some insight in to a time gone (60's) through the writing and the pictures as provided in the OP. Nothing else. There was never an intention to indicate if what the HA then in US did was right or wrong. Nor was this thread started to dicuss gangs in general.
I know this is KB and I know there is no way to steer the postings, so I will leave it at that.

you've got too far between the lines...meth dealers are scum cunts, just like drunk drivers. There is no relevance to the harm being personal, other than the fact that I don't know anyone that has been harmed by motorcycle gangs, he doesn't by the looks, and when I ride with other people, they dont talk about the harm that motorcycle gangs have caused them. I have heard plenty of stories about MM, Black Power, Killer Bees etc though. I know plenty that have run foul of them, I have had trouble myself with the MM.

Whats the difference? An MC, motorcycle club, could be Uylsses, knocking over chemists for denture fixative.... Or an MCC, motor cycle club, with international affiliations for the purpose of organised crime which is what MM, Black Power etc are.
Their is a world of difference between a social group, which the original gangs were & the modern incarnation which are criminal business focused but smart enough to trade on the lingering life style aura of the 50's and 60's.
I may have my MC & MCC arse about face, no offence intended.
Last time I rode down to Paeroa, a "gang" the name of which escapes me, nearly ran me off the road twice. Thundering past inches away. Second time, I was really tempted to put a swerve into the cretin looming in my mirror & play ten pin with them, but... Sense prevailed. I think they were patched up accountants & chiropractors letting the bad boy out for awhile.

The early HA in NZ (first official chapter outside USA) had a business card - these guys were usually above average riders, with some mechanical nouse too, riding British bikes had that effect. They would stop to help people broken down on the side of the road...and hand them the card - You Have Been Helped by a member of The Hells Angels. I've seen the card. Gangs have come a long way from hooligans on motorcycles.

And no wet weather gear, just another pair of jeans. These days people struggle for ''The Look'', and pay huge money for it, in those days the look just happened through dishevelment. I think I may have even invented a look - I had a ruined leather jacket, studs and everything (found it somewhere) but with a broken zip, and I also had a cut off DJ that wouldn't do up over the jacket....so I got some dog collars (don't remember what happened to the dogs) and bolted them to the DJ, I couldn't sew, but I knew bolts. I would wrap the double breasted leather jacket across my body, and buckle the 3 straps to close the DJ, crude but it worked for years. I laugh now when I see people with vests over their leather jacket done up with straps and buckles.

And you are still making the same mistake: Judging a group of 70's riders by 2012 "values". It will never work. I agree: The group that is portrayed in these two videos would not have fitted in as they were today in 2012. But then it was 1970. 40 years ago. Much has changed. Including the bikie scene. For better or worse? We all have our opinion.

The title of the thread is HA 1965, you deal with 1%ers in 2012....that's the point. In 45 years the bike club scene has gone from hooligans on bikes to something much more sinister. But I'm sure they are still good fun to have a beer with.

No I'm not. I was judging a group of retards that weren't very smart by today's or yesterdays standards. They were scrawny looking lightweights that would've got a fucking hiding by anyone that they tried to piss on had it not been for the numbers they cruised in.

We clearly see the vids in a diffrenet light. I did see a snapshot from the past (that belongs there) of a group of guys with 1970's bikes and 1970's values making a stand against the society in 1970. They were accepted as HA by the Americans in the 70's, and rest (as they say) is history.

Meh... Growing up in ChCh and riding british bikes in the 70's you were always going to come in contact with that scene.
I was lucky in that my rebellion didnt cost me a skilled trade or break down any family links. The difference between what the guys in the gangs were doing and what we were doing was however enormous. Their world was more violent and less free. We didn't have presidents and any structure we just did what we wanted and rode our bikes a lot.
The gear questions a goodie. Motorcycle gear was REALLY expensive relative to wages so much of the 'look' was based on making do with what you could get cheap (in my case)... I still remember riding to the cold kiwi in a pair of 'ski' overalls my gf made for me (made from some pattern her sister found). Looked bloody awful but worked a treat but not exactly HA clobber...
Yes - modern gangsters are looking meaner but comparatively to the times those guys were plenty mean and feared. But then they were a lot younger than todays gangsters. 17 or 18 compared to 35 so yeah - they don't have quite the same meat on their bones

Yeah, that clip is hard case alright, because that's how it was. I laugh at this whole new biker culture of people reliving the '70's....or at least what they thought the '70's was, because they missed it. There was no strutting around in leather and looking heavy...it was just hooligans on bikes.
Yeah ... 'twas ... but fuck it was fun ...
There was a search for something. And I am still searching... We used to ride in ripped jeans. And when they started falling apart too much we added another pair.
I've still got the two-pair of jeans and a cut off denim jacket in my shed .. and an old army great coat I ued to ride in ..
Retards are us.

Funny how life changes "I started riding in 1972 and liked brittish bikes because before they stopped riding all of my family rode British because that's basicly all there was.
But by the end of 72 I considered all Brittish bike riders to be nothing but dirt bags "because by then most of them were.
For at lest 20 years owning a bonnie was a waste of time unless you knew people,,and even then it could just as likely be those very people you knew that would be trying to steal your bike.
The HA's just went from being bike thief drunken violent cunts to being rich drug dealer violent cunts.
Through a family member that I have fuck all to do with here I've run into a couple of the HA's twice in the last couple of years,, both times I was offered P or coke while my shit head relative was franticlly trying to catch their attension from behind my back to let them know "I was not" one of the boys.
I also have a brother that is a member of the gypsy joker mc in Oz and a sister married to a highway 61 member,,,their exactly the same but with a different cartoon.
All you dreamers that think bike gang members are so cool,,,just be gratefull your not related to any of the vermin.
My brother and sister destroyed our parents last years with their constant shit,,cops parked out side at all hours,,cops following and standing over family members because of who they were related to.
Kids that haven't seen their fathers at xmas "ever" because he's always been on the club xmas run.
Kids that have had their bed rooms turned up side down at 2:00am while armed cops keep them out of their own homes because of what daddy and his mates have been up to this time.
Family event's taken over and ruined by stand over tactics and piss weak cunts trying to prove themselves to the "the club".
More resentlly,,wives and kids not being able to stay in their own fucking homes due to drive by shootings.
I had my own future in Australia bought to an abrupt halt by the Australian/NSW police within one week of them finding out I was related to a joker and a 61 toss,,,,five years and thousands of dollars down the drain over night.

Was white the black back then?? (Helmets that is)
Actually that helmet was my 'going on a longish ride' one (we were off to lake Ohau). Because it was new (ish) it would nearly stay on at highway speeds and it cost $18 from 'Tommys Suzuki center' and it was actually a fetching powder blue... It was so ghey even my Vespa riding brother wouldnt borrow it... and thats why it was $2 cheaper than all its more attractive brothers.
I figured I was tough enough for it... Eventually it became black with silver ghost flames in a moment of drunken sartorial madness to match a gas tank I was painting... The helmet looked great but the tank looked rubbish so it ended up blue... go figure... Black tank went blue - blue helmet went black - sort of rebalanced the universe...
I seem to remember it came with a visor which was pre scratched from new and utterly opaque at night under lights. It was so wobbly it distorted at 35mph and at 50 flattened against your nose. Very useful... I generally used ex US Army WW2 welding goggles which were dirt cheap from Valentines.
That helmet had a lot of adventures and ended up a planter....
The whole black helmet thing was a protest against the helmet laws (in theory) although it never seemed 'organized' to be that. I did have another semi jet helmet that did up with domes and flew off your head at about 40mph. It was heavy beyond belief and I suspect it was made of lead and designed to protect sailors from radiation or something... Stupid blood thing. Mum threw Dads old 'corker' away cos even she could see it was really worse than useless which was a shame as I'd like it now.
I used the blue one for MX, speed trials and general hooning until I got a FFM full face which was nasty nasty nasty....

Probably because it was a piss weak law that never stood up in court anyway.
The helmet the cop was wearing was a plastic "Polstar" that had a proven reputation for breaking into three pieces along it's seams if it did hit the road with any force.

Yeah, it was the shitty plastic Polstar. 1971. Big anti Vietnam war protest march up Queen Street. Hells Angels outside 246 punching protesters and smashing up their signs.
After the march there was a mardi gras with bands playing at several locations along the street. I found out years later that it was supposed to be a party to honour our returned soldiers. At the time I was just a naive 15 year old who caught the bus to town because thats what you did on a Friday night in those days.
I rember it well. Kissed my first girl, an older hippie chic, under a tree in Albert park. She said "Make love to me" and I thought "What the hell do you think I'm doing" and kissed her harder!

Thanks guys. All the articles/pics/clips are cool to see.
When I was 16 a friends' older brother started teaching me guitar. He was a clubie (I didn't quite know what that was), the folks thought he was alright but what a lot of tatts. They made him come to the door to pick me up each time. lol. I've known quite a few over the years. Various clubs, various rankings. Some intimately; socially; through my business & now at work. Some are still friends decades later. Plus like CFWB, I deal with them wkly, so to me it's always been about the context in which you deal with an individual or group. They're all very nice when I'm cutting them a good deal on tyres ;)
No illusions. I've seen some scarey shit, but I've seen fucked behaviour from Joe Blows too.
I remember using paperbags or newspapers down the front of a rather oversized leather jkt to keep the wind out. And 2 pr of jeans in winter. I'm such a sook these days... all thermal gear :cold:
It'd be interesting to see what those early guys are doing now & what they think of modern counterparts.
And as a female... never had anything 'ungentlemanly' happen. At 20 I even got rescued by some club members (friends) when a housemate went off the rails.
Oh and Pic #22... it's a Chic

From the ones I've known and seen about, a lot still ride bikes, but aren't acting like they were some heavy 1%er in the '60's or '70's. Some are riding Harleys, but most still show a keen interest in bikes and have moved on in what they ride.

I read some info about joining the Ulysses a while ago. I had a laugh when I read you have to be a hangaround & see if you fit in etc then when I started having a look at some of the ridiculously detailed rules I had a bit more of a laugh.
I was amazed while reading the 'outlaws ' book the sometimes anal rules the bikies had as part of their membership commitments & thought that it didn't seem particularly wild & free as it seemed.

I always thought it sad that a person had to do the hangaround/prospect thing etc before being 'accepted' into a group.
Any group demanding that wasn't worth it imho.
Anyone wanting to join under those conditions has something lacking and/or is 'needing' something, has something missing in their life
Just like a school-kids gang works I guess - it appeals to those who want to be 'cool', to be part of a group...

To many, the glamour of gangs is the freedom that they appear to have and which many lust after but are afraid to pursue.
Those who are blindly controlled by the morals of society and this included most Americans during the 1960s do not wish for this freedom as they prefer the well controlled lemming like existence of safety, security and working 9 to 5. Consequently those who rocked the foundations of their secure lives were seen not with fascination but with the same abhorrence that we look at people traffickers today.
Possibly we have changed a little, grown disillusioned with the idea that making a million bucks, driving a BMW, living in the suburbs and having a week in Fiji is the only way to be content. So, we look at those that have never thought this way and reckon that maybe they have it right. SOA and others of the same genre came along at the right time. But the darker side of the biker culture is that life is no less controlled than that of society at large. The rules are different but no less rigid and breaking them fraught with life altering consequences.
For some, the life of a biker is a magnet, for others it would never enter their mind to veer from the safe, straight and narrow. For most of us on KB, well, we choose bits from both and lead a life somewhere in-between.
